'Then the King said to Amasa, 'Summon the men of Judah to come to me within three days, and be here yourself.' But when Amasa went to summon Judah, he took longer than the time the King had set for him." - 2 Samuel 20: 4,5

David had let Joab go because of his murderous ways, and Amasa was his replacement as general of the army. David sent him on his first task, to gather troops to stop a rebellion, but Amasa was late. Because he was late, David resorted to letting Joab and his men stop the rebellion. As they went on the way, they encountered Amasa, and Joab killed him. Amasa died, all because he was late.

It seemed like a little thing, but it had major consequences. Too often, we allow the little things to slip in our lives. True integrity means trying to be excellent in every area, even the little things. As I travel across our state, there are certain 'little' areas that stand out as needing more attention: being prompt, submitting to our authorities, honoring traditions, proper communication and call backs, continuing our development and education, etc.

Let's do our best to be sharp in the little things as we pursue the call of God on our lives.

I was at the gym and working out. I saw an older lady talking to everyone in the place, except me. That didn't bother me, because when I'm working out I'm not trying to connect with people. I figured that she thought of my as a young guy not interested in talking with her, so no big deal. But then, I got on the treadmill and began to run. I was sweating pretty hard, which wasn't anything new, but then she surprised me. She went to the nearby fan and turned it on, then looked at me and said, 'Does that help'? I thanked her and realized how nice that was. She noticed how much I was sweating and tried to help, even if it was to save herself from having to work around a sweaty pig. What can you do to spontaneously help the people around you today?

Yesterday, we heard a fabulous message from Tim Delina in our morning service at District Council. He talked about the story of Paul and Silas in jail, in Acts 16. They were thrown in jail for healing a girl that had been telling people's fortunes through a demon possession. When God set them free, they could have left the prison, but they stayed and were able to lead the prison warden and his family to the Lord. Sometimes, God wants us to stay in a tough situation because there are more people that need to be reached for him. God says no because He is our Father. Somebody else's 'yes' is not necessarily my 'yes'. The devil will always say yes to lead you astray.

Recently, I had some knee pain. This might not seem that concerning to the average person, but to me, it's a bit more urgent. When I was a teenager, I had surgery on both of my knees to repair torn ACL ligaments, due to football injuries. Often, my knees will begin to ache, which according to my doctor is a simple way of telling me to slow down and give them a chance to heal up before I do strenuous activity again. Though I like to be active and workout often, I took a day off to let my leg heal.

Our lives can be the same way. At times, things can begin to 'ache', which can be a signal that we need to slow down and give ourselves a chance to heal before we begin our strenuous activity again. Even God believed in this concept, instituting the Sabbath as a common day of rest at least once every seven days. Take time to heal; it will go better for you in the long run.

- Having hired a new assistant (Kayla Gronenthal), both her and Jenny are working together this month, for training. While on two separate computers, Jenny was showing her how we print off banners, working with a company online. They were both on the same website, and they noticed that the original price for the banners ($42) on Jenny's computer had been almost doubled on Kaylas computer ($96) By working together, in training, we were able to nail down the original price. Thank God we had two computers up on the same page at the same time.

- Aaron Bade, youth pastor from South Sioux City, submitted this embarassing story on Facebook (be encouraged, we all make mistakes):Tonight one of my regular students came in on crutches and I asked him what he did. His buddy said that he had no leg. I thought that was funny and started teasing him. I kicked his pant leg only to discover... sure enough. He had no leg. Apparently he wears a prosthetic limb most of the time.

Philippians 1:27 - Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ.

Circumstances are always changing. We can plan for strategies of how to confront problems, but we don't necessarily plan for those problems to occur. Leadership is not just the wonderful mission of developing people in their process of discipleship, but it is also a responsibility to face the problems that come our way.

Last weekend, I was with Darin Stroud, the DYD of Kansas. He brought me in to help with ministry at the Kansas' Fine Arts. When we went to check into the hotel, there was a problem. They had upgraded us to a room with one bed, though we needed 3 rooms with multiple beds for multiple people. It was late and the worker behind the counter wasn't quite understanding the situation. I could sense the frustration building in Darin, as it would have in myself as well, but he did well to control his reactions and treat her with respect.

As leaders, we must do all we can to be ready for tough situations. We can grow and learn new skills that make us sharper in troubling times. But a good rule of thumb in all situations is to follow the verse above. This is a lifeverse, something that would be good for us to pray daily. No matter what happens, it helps us remember that we are witness for God and our actions speak louder than words, but reactions speak the loudest.

At the end of the day, ask yourself - did you conduct yourself in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ?

2). Blog Entry:

Yesterday, my boys and I went out to practice baseball. We throw the ball back and forth, then I throw them some pop fly's and ground balls. Then they take batting practice, and after that I finish up letting them pitch to me.

Eric was pitching and I hit the pitch to Ryan in the outfield. Ryan fielded it well, and then threw it to Eric, who wasn't looking - it hit him square on the back of his head! He screamed out, then went over to get the ball. I could tell he was fighting back tears, but he pressed on through the pain.

I taught him that as the pitcher, you've always got to be looking for the ball once it's in play. And it's the same thing for leaders as well - once we're in motion, always be looking for someone to throw an issue your way, or else you just might get hit in the head and get a big surprise. Heads up!

When he called, I was taking my son to the doctor, so we had to postpone our meeting. I felt bad about it, but he called me about an hour later and said that God knew what He was doing. Todd stopped to help a lady stranded on the side of the road with a flat tire. She said that many people had passed by, and he was the only one to stop and help, like the Good Samaritan.

Genesis 35:21 - 'First sell me your birthright'

Yesterday, my son Eric wanted to buy a video game for the Wii, Super Mario Galaxy. It cost about $40, but he only had $30. I told him to wait until he earned the other $10. About an hour later, he came to me and said he'd earned it already. His brother Ryan was trying to get his mom's attention, but he didn't want to walk upstairs and talk to her personally. Eric offered to do it for Ryan, for a small price.

Sure enough, Eric ran upstairs to get mom and earned ten bucks in the process. Ryan paid him ten dollars to walk up the stairs. Sounds kind of like giving up the rights of a first born son for a bowl of soup.

As leaders, we must think about what is important in our ministries. What are the values that can not simply be given away? We don't want to settle for something that is less than our best. Are we sacrificing quality ministry for other things like hobbies, games, entertainment, money, etc?

Hold onto the things that are important and don't give them away worthlessly.

Monday - Life Lessons (Bigger is Better?)

My daughter Abby and I, at the egg hunt

1). Song of the day: ♫ Hear THE SOUND ♫

2). Blog Entry:

This past weekend, my family and I had the privilege of participating in the Lincoln Christ's Place egg hunt. It was massive, with hundreds of people and thousands of eggs. They had an individual egg hunt for every age group of kids, 2nd graders, 3rd graders, 4th graders, etc. They even had one for junior highers, and suggested one for adults next year (I'm in)!

My daughter went first and found 23 eggs. They contained an assortment of tootsie rolls, laffy taffy, and gum, plus some small strips of paper with Bible verses on them. My son Eric went next, and he found 24 eggs, with the same types of candy and verses. Finally, my oldest son Ryan went. As a pre-teen, he was telling Eric and Abby how he was going to beat them.

Sure enough, he did, bringing in over 40 eggs. But, as we began to open them, we realized it wasn't that much better. Almost every egg had nothing but gum in it. Ryan went home as a champ, but with only enough gum to last until camp this summer.

Bigger is nice, looks larger, might give us some bragging rights ... but it's not necessarily always better. I think I'd take the 20 eggs with a good variety of candy rather than the 40 with nothing but gum!

- Grand Island churches got together for a citywide youth rally last Sunday night. They saw over 200 people in attendance at Northridge Church. The worship team was a conglomeration of all the churches involved and Wayne Northup came to speak. About 15 people raised their hands and accepted Jesus as their Savior.
- Some youth pastors gathered with me for a worship practice at York New Heights. As we entered their sanctuary, we saw a huge display of toys. The church was prepared for its Easter outreach this weekend. The people had been donating different toys and gifts to award children during the egg hunt. They have over 300 different items, almost 40 bikes alone, and are expecting over 300 people on Sunday morning, a new church attendance record.
