Thursday - Testimonies

1). Song of the Day: Hawk Nelson - ♫ Your love is a Mystery ♫

2). Blog Entry: Testimonies
- Darin, the DYD of Kansas, told us of a great story. A young man from camp last year was burdened for the students that needed to be at camp but couldn't afford it. He put together a campaign called CANS for CAMP (on facebook). He collected cans throughout the year and has now raised enough money to personally send several students to camp that wouldn't have been able to afford it otherwise.
- Two days ago we poured a new cement floor into a room called the Heart Room at our camp. It is directly behind the Birdwell Chapel, where we house our Pre Camper Program. We are planning to convert the room into a coffee shop with internet access for people to meet others and work on current projects. Thank you to the Nebraska Women's Ministries for enabling us to finish this project!

- Earlier this month, a new youth pastor asked me what kind of questions would be appropiate for an incoming youth pastor to ask his new boss, to be prepared for his new position. Here's a list of some questions that might work for such a situation:
- What are your expectations for growth in our youth ministry over the next two years?
- How often will we get together to discuss vision, ideas, and job performance reviews?
- What did you most want to change about the previous youth leaders ministry?
- Do you have any plans for change in the next few years?

Monday - Life Lessons

1). Song of the Day: Chris August - ♫ The Candy Wrap ♫

2). Blog Entry: Life Lessons
- Earlier this month we celebrated May Day. This is a day when children make small cups of candy and leave them on their neighbor's doorstep for a surprise treat. My daughter made up a few cupful's and then took them to her friends next door. It was fun to watch from our window as she crept up to their door, knocked, quickly ducked behind a bush or around the corner, only to be discovered a few seconds later by excited friends.
- An hour later or so, we heard the doorbell ring. When we opened the door, there on the doorstep sat a cup full of candy. Abby was so excited. As we looked through it though, we recognized that much of the candy was the exact same pieces we had put in the cups that Abby had already given out to others. Recycled may day treats! We were shocked, but when we asked Abby what she thought, she didn't care. More mature than her mom and dad, she responded 'It's the thought that counts'

Thursday - Testimonies

1). Song of the Day: Pamela Bowman - ♫ I'm Free ♫

2). Blog Entry: Testimonies
- A youth pastor in Kansas recently had a major auto accident. He was in intensive care at a local hospital for many months, and was transferred to Madonna Rehabilitation Center in Lincoln, NE. The DYD of Kansas called to ask if there was a family in the area that could possibly help house the wife and children so they could be near him for three months of care. I contacted the churches in the area, and Pastor Syd Maness of Lincoln Family Church contacted me back with a family that could help. When I put them in touch with the DYD, they knew each other: he had performed a marriage for a close family member of theirs in December 2010. Isn't it amazing how God works everything out in accordance with His will?
- I was working at the campgrounds the past two days. We had a major fire back in August and our gym complex with basketball courts and a pool was going to be unavailable for our youth/kids camps in June. The progress has improved though, and now it appears we will have our gym available for all camps, and possibly the pool for our last two camps as well.

Wednesday - Leaders Corner

1). Song of the Day: Third Day - ♫ My Hope is in You ♫

2). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner
- We are in the process of recruiting leaders to work at camp this summer. We have 2 youth camps and 2 camps for kids, and each camp needs a staff of near 100 people to make it successful. That includes people working as dorm leaders, kitchen staff, popstand crew, security, maintenance workers, nurses, lifeguards, etc. Many applications come in for the positions of leading students in the dorms, or working with them in recreation, but not as many come in for the difficult jobs of kitchen work or washing dishes. There are a few people though, that always volunteer to help out in these important areas, some for several weeks, others for the entire month (Heidi, Josh, Karen, etc...) What is it within a leader that gives them the courage to volunteer for difficult jobs and sacrifice much for others? Whatever it is, I need more of it! What are the tough jobs in your area that are difficult to find people to work in?
- Thank you to everyone that volunteers to help, and every position is important and essential. Would you to take some time to consider working with us for at least a week in June at our summer camps in Nebraska?

Monday - Life Lessons

1). Song of the Day: ♫ From the Inside Out ♫

2). Blog Entry:
- The other day my wife Kim was at Hobby Lobby buying some items for our family. As she came outside, one of the bags in her grasp fell free and blew away with the wind (common in central NE). Another lady nearby saw what happened and made an attempt to go after the bag. After a couple of steps, the bag continued to fly away from her in the wind. Rather than continuing after the bag, she turned to Kim (who had stopped running when she saw someone trying to help), gave a faint smile, and then proceeded to her car. Eventually Kim retrieved the bag and made it home, but felt akward with the possible 'Good Samaritan' that let her down. What do you think - was she nice for trying to help, should she have kept going after the bag to help Kim, or should she not have even tried to help at all?

2). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner
- Camptime is just around the corner. Click here for details about our upcoming youth and camps. Promoting the big event is so important in enabling its success. How can the students be there if they don't know about it? Here's some thoughts for good promotion tips when it comes to big events:
- Students are primarily visual in their preferred learning preferences. Showing videos, whether a camp highlight, the current camp promo video, or even a self made movie will go a long way in attracting their interest.
- Distributing forms is a must. Realize that many students will lose it before they take it home, so hand it out at the end of service. Encourage them to give it to their parents, or consider sending it to them through the mail. You could also wrap it up and present it like a gift (with a ribbon, bow, etc.) entitled TO YOUR PARENT (or guardian) to help the student remember to give it to them at home
- Many leaders just promote the event and randomly hope students respond. Get a target number in mind and specifically go after students that can A) benefit from the event and B) benefit from some extra time with you and your leaders/students.
- Consider the theme of the event and help prepare your students for the spiritual possibilities. With MARVEL, we are focusing on worship and God's Awesome Character.
- Think about when you return from the event. Plan now for a testimonial service, parent party in the parking lot to welcome the students home, message topics to followup with their camp experience, etc.
- Call or text a nearby youth pastor friend and see if you can work together to help carpool students/leaders to the event and help save on fuel costs while further building relationships at the same time. Even if you have adequate space, you might be a huge blessing for a needy situation nearby.

- People don't always hear the same thing. Last week the news broke that American's #1 enemy, Osama Bin Laden, had been killed by Navy Seals. He was behind the terrorist attacks that destroyed thousands of lives in America on September 11, 2001. My daughter Abby was born Feb 20, 2002, 5 months after that event. She had heard a lot about the terrorist attacks and all of the people involved, but she wasn't too familiar with the fine details. - This past weekend we had a wonderful Youth Leaders Training event in Lexington. About 25 youth leaders came together and we had Scott Townsend with us as well, the Youth Ministries Professor from Trinity Bible College. He went out on his own early Saturday morning for a walk around town, and he came across a severed leg on the sidewalk. Upon further review, he found that it was a fake leg. Still, it was a very strange thing to come upon while on a walk in a small rural Nebraska town. He immediately took a picture and posted it online for all to see. Small towns might seem slow to some, but incredible things can be discovered if you look a little closer.
