Wednesday - Leaders Corner

1). Song of the Day: Canton Jones - ♫ Big ♫

2). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner
- This past weekend, we held a retreat for Children's Leaders Training. We had the director of the National Children's Ministry Agency, Scott Berkey, with us. He mentioned something about camp that caught my attention. He said that when he was a children's pastor, he would go up to the most incredible Christian men and tell them, 'When our kids grow up, we want them to look just like you. Can you come and work with our kids?' He didn't shy away from the quality leaders; he boldly approached them in the right way.
- Also, he would try to recruit certain adults that he was hoping would become leaders to come with him to camp. He knew that when they experienced the services at camps, and saw the young students passionate about God in a life changing way, he would never be able to remove that image from his head. It was a great recruiting tool.
- Many of us struggle with needing more leaders in children's ministries. We often settle for leaders that most people don't want to imitate, or beg for any helpers to help with our students in their camps and retreats. These are opportune times to go after the best leaders and have them on our teams. Unapologetically go after the best, bring them to camp, and see what God will do.

Monday - Life Lessons

2). Blog Entry: Evolution
- Yesterday, in my Sunday School class, we were discussing God as our creator, and the comment argument against him in this world, evolution. We had mentioned how the process of evolution declares that each species continues to evolve physically to better adapt to their surroundings. Throughout the discussion our speaker referenced the page number in his book, but it didn't match the other textbooks being used by the rest of the class. With a sharp wit, one of the class participants said, 'Our textbooks apparently, have evolved.'

Wednesday - Leaders Corner

1). Song of the Day: Seventh Day Slumber - ♫ Love Came Down ♫

2). Blog Entry: Leader Standards
- The standards of a leader need to be set high. The mark where leaders set their boundaries will become the target of standards for all those following their example. They will strive to reach these goals, but often come up just short in their efforts. This is why we encourage leaders to consider the level they want their followers to be at, and then live slightly above that level themselves. These standards are communicated when we spend quality time with our followers, but also in their observation of all that we do, both on and off the stage. This is especially true in our speech, preferences with music, respect for the opposite sex, appearance, etc.
- Often, in our efforts to connect with the culture of this generation, we will consider the option of some sort of activity on stage that wouldn't be acceptable for us in our normal everyday lives. Maybe it's a gross embarassing game, a secular song for a human video or drama, or maybe saying a bad word/cuss word to get the students' attention. Whereas we may have the wisdom to distinguish this behavior from our personal daily values, we must remember that our followers are learning more from our actions than anything else. The common thought is, 'If that's good enough for my leader, than surely it's good enough for me too.'
- We must carefully weigh the decision to connect with the culture in this way against the potential downfall of making undesirable behaviors seem acceptable. We must remember our own experiences, ask ourselves, 'What would Jesus do?', submit to our leaders desires, and bounce the ideas off of trusted accountable ministry friends. Also, we must remember Paul's encouragement as well, 'Follow me example, as I follow the example of Christ' (1 Cor 11:1)

They are trying to tell the mayors, school superintendents, teachers - all of us, that they need a whole lot of bodies on them.' - Bill Cosby

Monday - Life Lessons

1). Song of the Day: Jadon Lavik - ♫ What if? ♫

2). Blog Entry: Honesty!
- Last Friday was my birthday. I was driving to the campgrounds in Lexington, NE to partake of a camp budget meeting. Almost 15 miles away, a cop turned around and suddenly pulled me over. I wasn't sure what the problem was, but I proceeded to pull my insurance and registration out of the glove box. I was interrupted by a voice at my window. As I turned, I saw the cop car alongside me and the cop speaking to me through his open passenger window.
- After opening my window, he explained that he needed to turn around and go after another vehicle going the opposite direction. He also admonished me to make sure I go the speed limit on his highway, and then he sped off. I didn't think that I had been speeding, and upon further review, apparently he had come to same conclusion. Rather than make an incident out of it, he just let me go and went after another citizen.
- Sometimes, we make mistakes. It would be easy for us to try and cover it up so as to 'save face', but it's better for us to be honest and move on. That's how we would want other people to treat us in the same situations, so we should afford them that courtesy as well.

Wednesday - Leaders Corner

1). Song of the Day: Leeland - ♫ I wonder ♫

2). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner
- Recently, we had an event where people from one church went to help people from another church host a children's outreach, which was partially funded by people from another church. We are planning an upcoming missions event where people from several churches will travel across the state and interact with people from several churches. Many of our young adult groups are focusing on the return of college students from different cities and churches, working in various churches across the state.
- It is wonderful when we come together and minister. One of our values in NE is 'together is better'. Our ministry is enhanced when we share resources, ideas, experience, and the journey. We must reach our own cities, and we often remember that we are called to reach the world at large, but we must remember that we are also called to reach the US, and NE.
- God's Word says '... and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, in Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.' (Acts 1:8) Jerusalem is our city, and foreign missions encompasses the ends of the earth. The US and NE would be our 'Judea and Samaria' and we need to work together to make it happen. What are you doing to help reach the US and Nebraska this year?

1). Song of the Day: Building 429 - ♫ Made for You ♫

2). Blog Entry: Be Last?
- I led a team of about 25 Masters Commission students on a missions trip to Morocco in 1999. We had to stay in Spain, and then travel across the border to Morocco by a 45 minute boat ride. It was during the Ramadan season so many Muslim's were traveling to Morocco for their pilgrimage, and we were trying to reach out to them during the process.
- On our last trip back into Spain from Morocco, we were rushing to get on the boat. I was leading the pack, making sure we didn't get lost and we made it on time. Once we got on the boat, I relaxed in my seat and may have even dozed off a bit. We arrived in Spain and began walking to our hotel, when we suddenly realized, 'One of our students didn't make it'
- We looked around and Tyson was gone. He was a dark skinned man that easily could have passed for a Moroccan. We got ahold of the transit authorities who contacted the Moroccan side and found that Tyson was being detained there. He was the last one in our line of tourists and they stopped him to ask for his passport, which I had with me at the front of the pack.
- I took the quick boat ride back to Morocco, showed his passport to the angry authorities, and walked away with Tyson in tow. Sometimes, it's good to be last, and make sure everyone makes it on the boat!

Wednesday - Leaders Corner

1). Song of the Day: Mutemath - ♫ Blood Pressure ♫

2). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner
- I arrived home from National Fine Arts two days ago. When I was working around the house, I decided to empty all of our trash. Going from room to room, I discovered our water heater was leaking. I am not a handyman so I didn't have the slightest clue what to do. My brother-in-law was with us and he was helpful. He had come home from a trip a few years ago and his water heater had burst and he had water all over as well. He knew exactly what to do and we were able to stop the leaking.
- Had my brother-in-law not been there, it could have been much worse. Initially, he wouldn't have been there because his plan had been to continue traveling on that evening. But a few days earlier his son became sick and had to visit an emergency room. It changed our schedule and allowed him to be at our house at the right time to help out. I remember being frustrated that our schedule had changed, only to be relieved that it had happened so he was there to lend me a helping hand.
- Sometimes, changes in our schedule and plans are not a bad thing. They could result in something better. We must be flexible and adapt to the situation, remember that 'in all things, God works together for the good of those that love Him' (Romans 8:28)

2). Blog Entry: Life Lessons
- A few nights ago, we were able to celebrate the National Merit Winners for National Fine Arts in Phoenix, Arizona. It was a great time, but a long night. It started with a 2 hour joint service of adults and youth. Then after a short break, they announced the winners and had several perform live. Though I enjoyed it immensely, my children began to get restless. It was a long time for them to be in service, especially after 8 weeks of constant services in camps, retreats, etc. Finally, when it was near the end and to beat the crowd, I gave in and we had an early exit.
- On our way out the door of the arena, I heard 'Nebraska'. It surprised me because we didn't have any entries that I thought had made it to the possibility of being a National winner. When I peeked back in, I saw that one of our students from Omaha had ranked in the top 3 of Visual Art 2 Dimensional. I saw later online that she had finished 2nd, the highest Fine Arts finish for any of our NYM students in the last 20 years! Now, if only I had waited one more session before heading out with my kids...

Wednesday - Leaders Corner

1). Song of the Day: Switchfoot - ♫ Dark Horses ♫

2). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner
- One of the most important aspects of youth ministry is that of the CHASE, pursuing them in a relationships outside of church. In today's day and age, we must abide by strict guidelines in this area because of the rise of predators, but students and parents love when we take an appreciation for who they are at home, in their neighborhood, and at school. To neglect this step could cause serious consequences.
- When I was a junior high pastor, I remember a particular Wednesday night when a student named Brandon brought a rough kid as a guest, Carlos. At first he stayed on the outside of the group, cautious about joining in, but eventually he warmed up and enjoyed the night with everyone else. As was our custom, we had him fill out a visitors form with his contact info and I took it home with me after the group was over with the assignment to contact him at some point throughout the week.
- I took his visitor sheet home and stuck it on my desk. I was dating my wife at the time and we had a busy weekend prepared. Every night I came home, saw the visitors sheet on the desk, and told myself that I would call him tomorrow, which I never did.
- The next Wed, before our youth group, my sister told me about a horrible incident at her apartment complex. A young man had held up a mom with a knife, arriving back at her place with groceries. He asked for all of her money and when she paused, he stabbed her mercilessly. Sure enough, that young man was Carlos.
- To this day, I wish I would have contacted him as I should have. Would I have kept him from making this horrible mistake, maybe? But the fact that I'll never know because I didn't do my job is torture indeed.

Monday - Life Lessons

1). Song of the Day: Nichole Nordeman - ♫ I'm with you ♫

2). Blog Entry: Annie
- After 6 weeks of camp, I couldn't wait to just get home. We were on our way there from Ohio and the last thing I wanted was to take another day away before arriving at my house. But my wife had seen an advertisement for open auditions in Omaha for the Broadway production of ANNIE. My daughter Abby was a perfect fit and she really wanted to try it, so I gave up my extra day at home and waited one more day in Omaha before arriving.
- I'm so glad I did! They went to the audition and Abby was the first person in Omaha to get a callback. She was able to be one of the few girls that performed in front of the Broadway producer onstage. They said they loved her and they'd give us a call. In New York, out of 1,200 girls that auditioned only 50 got the same callback that my daughter did. We now wait to see what happens from here, but this was a moment that my daughter will cherish the rest of her life.
- Now, how foolish would I have been to take that away from her just for another lazy day at home? Most of the time, it's better to think of others first and put their needs above our own.
