1). Song of the Day: Classic Crime - ♫ The Precipice ♫

2). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner
     - Here are 8 tips for helping children deal with tragedies:
§ Limit your child's exposure to the news. Make sure that news about violent events is not playing over and over in the background on radios or TV. Watch news with your kids and discuss events and their feelings about things.
§ When frightening events occur, watch your own reaction when children are nearby. When adults react dramatically, emotionally or fearfully, it can be very unsettling for children, who take cues from adults. While you should be truthful in your feelings, be careful not to let your behavior shatter their sense of safety and security.
§ Give comfort and reassurance. Allow children to express fear and sadness, don't dismiss bad feelings. Encourage questions so you can understand their fears. They may be feeling vulnerable themselves, or they may fear losing parents or siblings that they depend on and love.
§ Emphasize safety. Let children know that while sad and bad things do indeed happen, they are rare events. Most people are good. Reassure them that you will take care of them and keep them safe, and that police and teachers will help to look out for their safety, too. Use this as a time to reinforce safety rules.
§ Channel things in a positive direction whenever possible. Point out good things, such as the heroism and bravery of police and doctors and the kindness of the people in the community. Use bad events as a springboard to reinforce gratitude and appreciation for life; the importance of kindness and empathy, the importance of helping others.
§ Take positive action. We all feel helpless in the face of terrible events, children even more so. Encourage your child to take an action, such as making a donation, writing a letter, going to a church service, or leaving flowers or mementos at a memorial.
§ Ensure that your communications are age appropriate. Young children don't have a clear understanding of death, even if they say the words, so events may not affect them much; teens might suppress reaction entirely in a misguided attempt to appear cool or jaded. See links below for more on age-related reactions and communications.
§ Keep an eye on things to ensure that they adjust. Watch for regression, clinging, hyperactivity in young children; at any age, kids who are anxious could exhibit sleep or eating disturbances. Teens or young adults may be obsessed with details of events, Watch how your kids play, how they talk about things to peers. If signs of disturbance persist, they may need the help of a professional so they don't stay "stuck" in anxieties or fear.

     - This past weekend was our NE District Office Christmas Party. We had a gift exchange with a rule that you could steal something twice before it was finished. I first stole a star wars coffee set, that was stolen from me and finished. Then I stole a great box of candies that was also stolen from me and finished. I went to open a gift and got some chocolate covered cherries and a little portable emergency light, which remained with me to the end. The lesson - don't steal, it never pays off.

     - A student from Lincoln wanted to go on the AIM Missions Trip this year but she didn't have an obvious way to raise the funds. After talking with her youth pastor, she committed to sign up, do her best, and trust God. Throughout the process, she kept her faith even in trying times. Suddenly, a relative heard about her quest and gave her some rare coins. When she turned them in to a dealer, she discovered they were with thousands of dollars and she immediately had all she needed to go on the trip. When God calls us to go, He also equips us with what we need as well.

1). Song of the Day: Anita Wilson - ♫ Jesus Will ♫

2). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner
     - Tonight is the National 12x12x12 offering for Speed the Light. We encourage every teen and adult to give a personal $12 offering. If even a quarter of our students and leaders would do this, we would collectively raise over 1 Million dollars for Missions. Why is Speed the Light so important?
     1. It supports our missionaries - they know that we are behind them and with them in their place of ministry. They will not get their vehicles or communication needs unless we give to Speed the Light.
     2. It teaches our students to give - we must encourage them to tithe as a command from God, but also to give to those in need. Many of our groups have no option for this unless they support Speed the Light. Teenage givers become adult givers, and usually with much more resource to offer.
     3. It give us a big picture - Sometimes it's easy to get focused only on what we are doing and what we see immediately around us. There is a big world with many issues around us and our students want to do something about it. Several of our STL projects are tackling problems in key hot spots around our globe.
     4. It's an aspect of Campus Missions - Every campus missionary agrees to try to give $100 to STL over the course of the year. While they strategize to reach their friends, they keep the big picture of world missions important as well. It's a challenge for leaders to step up and accept.
     5. It's a main program in National Youth Ministries - As an Assemblies of God church and ministry, this is one of the important programs sponsored by our movement. Supporting STL also supports our leaders and the denomination we've chosen to support with our involvement and membership.

     - Last week I had a phone call come into my office in Grand Island that was unexpected. As I picked up the receiver, I heard the voice on the other end say hi. It was one of missionaries in an undisclosed country asking for some contact information of a local pastor in Nebraska. This missionary is a first time missionary in a country that is in Far Asia, almost 10,000 miles from Nebraska, and yet we were talking on the phone as if he was in the other room. Technology is a wonderful tool that is available to help us stay closer to each other, even when God calls us to be miles apart. We must take advantage of it and support those who need it.

They were unchurched kids that she knew from school and she wanted to help reach them for Jesus. They came to camp and they both had an amazing time. Of course, it's now been several months later, but she reported to me that they are still plugged into the church that they came to camp with. They also have joined the Campus Crusade at the school they attend. What an encouragement to hear that they have stuck with it and are continuing in their faith.      - This past weekend I had the chance to put some Christmas lights on the outside of our house. My wife and I went to the store to buy a few more strands and we had to visit four different stores to find the right ones. It was very busy in Grand Island as most people had the same idea that we did.
     - I got up on the roof with my boys and put the lights in place, realizing near the end that I didn't have enough gutter clips. So, I had to run out to the store and grab some more. Well, sure enough, I had to visit 5 stores before I found any; most stores were completely sold out.

2). Blog Entry: Life Lessons
This past week we celebrated Thanksgiving. My family always heads to Omaha after our kids last day of school, Tuesday. Tuesday morning though I woke very dizzy and nauseous. After visiting the doctor, I discovered I had a strong inner ear infection and would struggle with the dizziness for many days. My wife and kids headed out without me, as I stayed home to fight the sickness with strong meds.
It was hard to be apart from my family during the holiday, and miss all of the fun moments with friends and family back home. But it was also a wonderful time for me to spend with God and catch up on valuable devotional time. I still would have rather been back home for the holidays, but I made the best of situation and God met with me as well. Remember, even Paul and Silas found time to be with God in a desperate situation in prison. Make the most of your tough moments today and this week as well; spend time with Him!

2). Blog Entry: Tomorrow is Thansgiving, so there won't be a blog entry in honor of the Holiday.

     - Having just finished our convention, a thought occurred to me. Many students will go home and ask the question, 'Why can't my church be more like convention?'
     - We tend to quickly throw this question aside, assuming it's just a childish way of looking at things. But really, why not?
     - Sure, we can't have half the state come together once a week, but we can have a good group from our area. We can't bring in the most amazing national speakers once a week, or national bands as well,  but we can make our own messages and worship time exciting and inviting. We can't have the most excellent light show and sound that money can buy every week, but we can work slowly and surely toward that goal, being as excellent as we can be.
     - There isn't a rule somewhere that says churches have to stay the same  and big events have to be better. Hopefully, the big event compels the church forward so the same energy and excitement is achieved on the local level on a regular basis. Then, the big event is more beneficial for coming together as one, rather than being more impressive experientially.
     - So ask yourself, why not?

1). Song of the Day: Kari Jobe - ♫ When Hope Came Down ♫

2). Blog Entry: Life Lessons
     - God has a way of doing little things to remind us that He's always with us. This past weekend we finished our 2nd of two statewide youth conventions in Nebraska. It's a tremendous amount of work, with planning and details having been started over a year ago. It's a great feeling to have the conventions finally here and see our dreams become reality. Hundreds or students and teens from all across the state attended, and many reported having a tremendous amount of fun and experiencing God in incredible, fresh ways.
     - These next few days are my chance to finish all of the final steps to make convention complete. Going through registrations, final calls, final payments, putting materials away, re-ordering for the next event, etc. Sometimes it's hard to get going on these things, with the big moment come and gone. But today, as I was coming home after my morning workout, I was thinking about all the work I had do to. Starting to feel depressed, I looked up and saw a huge truck in front of me. This is unusual in our country neighborhood in Grand Island. As I looked a little closer, I saw the city of origin for this monster work truck - South Sioux City. The city that helped host our first convention a few weeks ago. Great memories came back to my mind, and then I realized that God gave me a little reminder about how great He is and how privileged I am to do what I do.

2). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner
     - In several meetings with key leaders, we've been talking about how to become more missional in our churches and communities. The desire is the focus more or reaching out to those around us. Here's some thoughts that have come up for your consideration:
     - We must pray together. Romans 15:30 - 30 I urge you, brothers and sisters, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to join me in my struggle by praying to God for me.
     - We are an emergent church, being birthed again. We cannot let the past dictate our future
     - Intercession invokes the presence of God in human affairs
     - We must engage in prayer with passion frequently
     - We must pray for an open door of the gospel
     - The apostolic nature is surely supernatural. We can expect miracles when we take risks for God.
     - Mission is the mother of theology, why theologize about anything unless mission has occured
     - Document your vision, pray over it, orient your congregations, revisit it, judge all of your activity in light of it
     - Don’t make decisions out of fear, uncertainty, or the unknown

2). Blog Entry: Life Lessons
     - This past week, I was filling up my vehicle with gas in Grand Island. After going inside to pay, she handed me a receipt that I didn't need. I went to throw it away on my way back to my car, but missed the trash can. I bent over to pick it up and throw it away, stepping forward in the process. When I stood up, I banged my head against a fire switch hanging from the pole near the trash. The bottom of the switch was sharp and sliced an inch cut at the top of my forehead, just below my hairline.
It began to bleed on my way home and so I attended to it and then put on a hat, hiding it from my wife. I had 4 days before I was speaking at a church on Sunday morning, so I was hoping that it would heal mostly before then. Yesterday, it still glowed a little and wasn't healed completely, so I tried to have my bangs a little lower on my forehead to cover it.
Throughout the message, I had a nagging thought in the back of my mind that my cut was shining for the world to see, distracting everyone from the sermon. After I was finished, I mentioned it to a few people, and they were completely surprised. No one had noticed. I was worrying for nothing. Isn't that how it is most of the time when we worry?

2). Blog Entry: Life Lessons
     - This past weekend, we had our Eastern NE Youth Convention in Sioux City, IA (see pics here). It was a great time with half our state, celebrating relationship with God. Our speaker was Garland Owensby, from Southwestern University in TX, and he did a great job.
Though I obviously interacted with our students and leaders much throughout the weekend, I had two unexpected encounters. I ran out early Friday afternoon to grab pizza for our volunteers before registration began. When I walked into the pizza place, the worker greeted me by name. He had been a student with the youth ministries in South Sioux, and been out to several of our events as a teenager. We reconnected and he told me about a youth ministry he is helping with as a leader now! Also, we had several local employees helping us with the major climbing wall at our facility during the late night after service Friday night. One of the workers was walking past me while I was preparing in the green room backstage. He asked if I was 'Toby' and I found out that he also was a former student of the youth ministry in the area. He wasn't necessarily living right for God at the time so I had a chance to encourage him to focus on spiritual issues again.
Even in the middle of a huge event, God had two specific moments in store for me. Don't be so busy that God can't use you in His unexpected opportunities throughout your day!

     - On Saturday we took my kids to a great place in Omaha, The Amazing Pizza Machine. They have a huge pizza buffet and tons of games for people to play and enjoy. We bought some tickets for our kids to do some laser tag. They were in a group that had 11 people and most of the others were adults. We didn't think they would do that well, but when they came out, Eric found that he was in first place. He had been focusing on a major base that was worth several points and right before the round finished, he blew it up triumphantly. Had he not succeeded, he would have been close to last place, but by taking a big risk it paid off. Don't be afraid to take risks, even if the odds are stacked against you.
