2). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner
At the Youth Pastors Retreat last weekend, we had some great 'round table' discussions about different aspects of youth ministry. Here are some thoughts/ideas that came about when we discussed the relationship between a senior pastor at the youth pastor/leader:
     - we are called to them as our leader, we must support them vision, and support them as a person
     - find out what they value and add meaning to them in that area with loyalty and assistance
     - regular communication is a priority, even if you have to initiate it
     - follow them the way you would want your youth to follow you
     - public loyalty earns private leverage
     - even when you disagree, do what he/she says. Just as we follow God because its' His mission, we follow our pastors because its' their church
     - talk with your pastor about your future plans, especially before you pursue anything apart from noticing him
     - keep your pastor in front of your students. Maybe on a rotation of once a quarter. They can come in and speak, run an activity, give a testimony, take a poll, show some pictures, just say hello. After the meeting, make sure to have a special treat 'provided' by your pastor as well

2). Blog Entry: Life Lessons
     - We heard the story this weekend about a man that found a wallet with several hundred dollars in it. He contacted the owner of the wallet, who asked if the money was still there. When he said that it was, he made plans to meet the owner and return it. When they met, the owner asked if he could pay him some money to thank him for being honest, but he denied. The owner then asked if there was anything he could do to thank him, at which time the man asked him to come to church with him. When he came, he gave his heart to Jesus in prayer. That very night, he was involved in a motorcycle accident and passed away. We need to do all we can to take advantage of every opportunity to share Christ with those around us.

2). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner
     - I would like to encourage you to take a few distraction-free minutes to consider what small changes may make a big difference in life and ministry. The following are example questions that may kick-start some personal evaluation.
* How much more could be done if time spent on Twitter or email was restricted?
* Would meetings be more effective if the leader read and implemented principles learned from three books on effective meetings?
* Would district attendance be affected in a positive way if event planning/promotion could be completed one month earlier?
* Would the work still get done and family relationships be strengthened if one night a week was reserved as “technology free”?
     - My hope is that each of us takes a moment to evaluate our habits and be willing to tweak them in a way to make us more effective in our ministry and personal endeavors.  Once you’ve developed your plan, find someone who will encourage you and help hold you accountable to make these tweaks to your daily routine.

2). Blog Entry: Life Lessons
     - Yesterday my family and I returned to our home church in Grand Island. It had been awhile due to our summer schedule of travel and speaking at different camps. Shortly before we were ready to go, the doorbell rang and surprised most of us. But not my daughter, who ran to the door and let her friend Cydra in. Abby had talked to her about coming to church and made sure she was ready to go first thing in the morning.
Our speaker was speaking about reaching out to our friends who are lost without Jesus and dying without hope. It struck me to think about asking me friends and neighbors to come with me to church from time to time. But then it occurred to me that someone in my family had already done that. Thank God for the example that my daughter, the youngest one in my family, set for us.

2). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner
     - When I was a youth pastor in Bellevue, I had several things that were important to my weekly schedule, helping me stay sharp. First, I had daily time in the morning in prayer and the Word. This was something that my pastor initiated for all staff members, so we prayed together in the sanctuary from 8 to 9am. We put a little music on in the background, and then we split up across the room to be quiet and  alone with God. I would mix it up, sometimes singing, walking and praying, sitting quietly, reading my Word, etc. Second, I would meet regularly with my youth leaders for dinner before setup on Wednesday night. We would usually go to Taco Bell or Burger King for about an hour. I never had an agenda during this time - we would just hang out and be friends. Third, I would meet with my other pastors on staff for staff meeting on Tuesday mornings after prayer. This was required, but it was also greatly needed. We were able to strategize together for upcoming ministry, and we would always take time to go to lunch together and pray for each other as well. Finally, Thursday mornings I would meet at a local coffee shop with other youth pastors in the city. There was no formal agenda for these meetings, though there were times we discussed district issues and planned upcoming events together, but most of the time it was just for fun and fellowship. These four items on my weekly schedule were so important to helping me stay sharp and focused in ministry.

Shelby Holbrook, one of our long time fine arts participants, was at Nationals again last week. This would be her last time as a high school student, as she graduated last spring. She has participated almost every year since I've been the DYD, and most of the time she sang a song for the female vocal solo category. Never had she advanced before, but she never gave up. This year, her final year, she got a callback. It was a huge achievement, and one that she will never forget. Remember, even if it takes a long time, keep pursuing your goal and never give up!

     - Tonight, I will be giving the testimony of Sterling. Sterling was a student that I had the privilege of seeing at National Fine Arts in Denver. As I was waiting to hear a NE student preach, Sterling was delivering his short sermon. He began to struggle and wound up giving up, running down the aisle and out the door with his family trailing behind him. The image was hard to erase from my mind, so when I got home I wrote his pastor a letter to encourage him. While speaking at a camp in New Hampshire several years later, I met a young youth pastor named Sterling. The name jogged the memory in my mind so I asked him if he had ever been involved in National Fine Arts in Denver. Sure enough, he was the same guy! He told me that he had walked away from God after the event, but when his pastor showed him the letter, it broke his heart. He made things right with God and continued to pursue God's plan for his life. He went to CBC after graduation, and then became a youth pastor in Massachusettes. After we embraced he ran to his car, and retrieved the letter. Though worn out and faded, it meant a lot to him still. He kept it in the glovebox of his car to use whenever he needed to remind himself that God always has a plan for his life.
      - Fine Arts, just like other NYM programs and events, are not the finish line! The are a step on the journey of God's plan for your life. Don't give up, and God will do amazing things through you as well. And don't be afraid to encourage those that may have given up, God might use to you to help them keep going as well.

     - This past week I finished my 8th camp of the summer. This was the most camps I've been involved with over a summertime since I have become the DYD. It was a joy and an honor. Throughout the camps, I was putting regular updates on this blog, especially during our own Nebraska camps in June. Sometimes, you write the blog posts and publish them online, but walk away and aren't really sure if anyone notices them. I've made it a point not to worry about that, but just be faithful in what God has called us to do. There are other times, when God blesses us for our obedience as well. An older lady from my church in Grand Island surprised me acknowledging this blog and thanking me for the encouraging testimonies.
