     - This past week I was with other DYD's picking up new STL Projects at our National STL Summit in Palm Springs, CA. It was a blast and I got to golf with our Youth Camp 2 speaker from 2011, Fabian Kalapuch. As we were getting ready to tee off on Tuesday morning, Fabian got a text from his son. Because of the Jewish holiday Yom Kippur, they had canceled school on Wednesday, so the annual See You At The Pole rally had been rescheduled for Tuesday morning instead. In the change and confusion, many students forgot, and Fabian's son was the only one that showed up. But he still went and prayed for his school at the flagpole, even all by himself.

2). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner
     - Here's an excerpt from our National STL Director Chet Caudill, about the new theme for STL for the 2012/2013 school year - FINISHED:
     - 'The concept for the new STL theme is based on two verses from the Bible. According to Acts 20:24, Paul was filled with a determination to finish the task that was given Him by God. In fact, he considered even his own life and comfort to be secondary to the goal of reaching people with the good news of Jesus. The metaphor he uses is one of a race. He was passionate about finishing all that God had called him to do. Later on in 2 Tim. 4:7, he records these words, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." Paul's story recorded in Scripture was one of dreams expressed and dreams fulfilled. It was "now and not yet", but towards the end of his life it had become "then and now."
     - Collectively, our passion is to "finish" the work, whatever it takes, so that one day we will be able to look back and know that we "finished." Jesus lived to finish His Father's will, and on the cross He declared, "It is finished." Salvation is here. That is the good news that we long to share.
     - One more thing...it’s easy to reach “pinnacles” (mountain peaks) in our journey with Christ...and in our missions endeavors. If we are not careful, we can race to “false finish lines.” Paul ran to “finish” the race...only when his part was done could he say “I have fought the good fight...I have finished the race.” Small victories came along the way....those are moments for rejoicing. But after rejoicing, we must dream again....we must remember that we won the battle, but the war still lingers.'

2). Blog Entry: Life Lessons
This coming weekend, my friend Brian and I are going to put a new roof on my house. I'm a little anxious about it because I'm not the best handyman, but Brian has been a professional roofing contractor so I feel like we're in good hands. He set us up with an account at Home Depot, so my wife and I went over to pick out the color of shingles we wanted. It took us a long time and we finally settled on a specific kind after looking at many options. We were hurrying out to pick up our kids from school when the worker who had been helping us came running after us. We had left all of our insurance papers with him at the desk, the papers we needed to file the appropriate forms to receive our money for the roof. Thank God he was kind enough to run after us and help us. We should always be willing to be that kind to others as well.

1). Song of the Day: Jason Castro - ♫ Only a Mountain ♫

2). Blog Entry: Testimonies
     - A young man from South Central Nebraska was diagnosed with a major brain tumor. They rushed him to Omaha and did some further tests. The doctors told his family that if they had surgery, he would most likely die, but if he didn't have surgery he would definitely die. Faced with a tough situation, they scheduled the surgery and asked many people to pray. During the surgery, the doctors came out every hour to update the family on the progress. The first few reports were bleak, but then they came out more hopeful. At one point, they said they could probably get the tumor out and keep him alive, but he may not walk and wouldn't remember anything from his past. After the surgery was done, the doctors came out very excited. They removed the tumor, and he would walk and remember everything fine. The only change is that he wouldn't be able to be involved in contact sports at all. We were all amazed at God's miracle in this young students' life.

Backstage at National Youth Convention, Louisville, 2012

Wednesday, September 19, 2012

1). Song of the Day: Sixteen Cities - ♫ Glorious ♫

2). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner
     - Our NE Fall Youth Conventions are now less than 2 months away. Here's some good things to plan ahead for so you can maximize this event with your local ministry:
     - The hotel registration deadlines are in early October. Plan to call the hotels and reserve your rooms the last week of September. Once the deadlines come and go, they may not have rooms available, or be able to honor our special rates. When I was a youth pastor, I planned to have 4 students and a leader in each room. I would always reserve more spots than I currently had, anticipating that I would pick up a few late stragglers.
     - Our NE convention event page on Facebook is a great place to send your students. They can click on being an attendee to the event. They can post EPIC videos, and watch others on the live feed. They can interact with other students from other churches that are coming as well. Links are provided to all of the important details they may need as well.
     - Would you join me in prayer for this event? I am personally committing to pray for an hour each week in October, for our youth conventions. My plan is take one meal and fast and pray. I would love to have you join me in this effort, and even encourage your leaders and students to participate as well.
     - Consider your transportation. Just as in planning for extra spots in hotel rooms, plan for extra spots in your vehicles. If possible, I would encourage you to arrive in the destination no later than 5pm, to give plenty of time for checking in to your rooms, getting a bite to eat, arriving early to hangout and check out some booths, etc. Would you be willing to call a nearby church and partner together, especially if you have an extra spot or two to offer to them as a help? I also used to have a parent back at our home church that I would use as point person to communicate during the event for our arrival time. Sometimes, that parent would even organize a 'welcoming party' so we when we arrived home, they cheered us in, and had some snacks for us before we went our separate ways.
     - Finally, I would target a few students I would want to make sure go to convention. Students that need a breakthrough, need to get more involved in your group, students with leadership potential, students on the verge of salvation, upperclassmen that need exposure to after graduation options, etc. Use this event to help with your overall purpose and mission.

1). Song of the Day: Kutless - ♫ If it ends today ♫

2). Blog Entry: Life Lessons
     - This past week my son Eric had his first 7th grade football game of the season. It was against a rival middle school from the other side of Grand Island, on a Thursday night. On Wednesday, Eric was at youth group hanging out with his friend Skyler. Skyler told him that he was on the other football team and that they were going to 'pummel' them. Sure enough, when Eric got on the field for the game, Skyler was lined up right across from him as a lineman. They faced each other throughout the game. The final outcome was 36-0 in Eric's favor. I asked him if he had rubbed it in to Skyler, but he said no. I asked if he had defended himself when Skyler was talking bold at youth group, and he said no. I asked why, and he said he knew he didn't need to because he was confident that they could win. Quiet confidence is more attractive than loud boasting.

     - Last night, I was able to visit the youth group at the AG church in Alliance, with Coach T. There were about 40 students there and at the end of the night, he asked students if they wanted to open their hearts to God. About 5 students raised their hands to pray that prayer with him. Afterward, he texted me a text that he had received from a student that said he had never felt this way before; he felt like his heart was beating so full and alive for God.

2). Blog Entry: Life Lessons
During our Missions Bike Ride last week, we had a few Masters Commission students from Rapid City, SD join us. One of the ladies named Rebecca had sent out several support letters to relatives, many of whom she had never even met. She heard back from most but not all, and came on the ride with plenty of money. During our leg from Grand Island to Lincoln, we stopped at Runza restaurant for lunch in York. As Rebecca was in line for her food, a lady came up to her and asked her if she was Rebecca. Surprisingly, this was a cousin of Rebecca's that she had sent a support letter to but had never met, and they recognized her from her picture in the information. They connected for the first time at a random encounter in a restaurant on a 108 mile ride that day. Amazing!

     - Recently, my wife and I had our backyard deck redone. We worked with a local contractor that had done several jobs with us before. We were never too close with him, but he did good work and always reasonably priced. During the few days he was working on the deck, my kids began to play near him. Most people might be annoyed by this activity and I thought that I'd have to go out and tell them to play elsewhere. But our contractor didn't mind at all. In fact, as they were playing with water hoses, he asked them if they'd wash his truck. They proceeded to do it, and he gave them ten dollars. They kept washing other cards and wound up making almost 50 dollars on the day! Being friendly is the best way to promote yourself and your business.
