2). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner
Last week during the Board of Regents Meetings at North Central University in Minneapolis, MN, we broke into subcommittees that discussed different topics. I was in a group that discussed rising moral issues in the youth and young people of today. Here are some of the things that came up in our group:
     - Issues of marriage (living together, homosexuality, divorce)
     - Absolute Truth, relativity, pluralism
     - Segmented reality (two lives, one at home and one at church)
     - Casualization of sin
     - Lack of doctrinal assurity, knowing why you believe what you do
     - Speed of our culture causing quicker decisions and less thought of long term consequences
     - Social media invades our quiet personal time with the Lord
     - Increasing secularization of the Western World

2). Blog Entry: Life Lessons
     - On Saturday we took my kids to a great place in Omaha, The Amazing Pizza Machine. They have a huge pizza buffet and tons of games for people to play and enjoy. We bought some tickets for our kids to do some laser tag. They were in a group that had 11 people and most of the others were adults. We didn't think they would do that well, but when they came out, Eric found that he was in first place. He had been focusing on a major base that was worth several points and right before the round finished, he blew it up triumphantly. Had he not succeeded, he would have been close to last place, but by taking a big risk it paid off. Don't be afraid to take risks, even if the odds are stacked against you.

2). Blog Entry: Life Lessons
     - The other day I was in the Omaha area of Nebraska, speaking at a youth ministry on a Wednesday night. After finishing the service, I stopped at a gas station to fill up before starting on the 2 and 1/2 hour trip home. At the station, another car pulled up to me and a young lady got out, ready to fill up. She looked over to me and said my name. Sure enough, it was a girl that had been a part of one of our youth ministries in the Omaha area and she knew me as the DYD from her attendance at district events. She worked across the street and was just getting off, heading home. We were able to connect and I was able to encourage her before finishing up. What a great 'God' moment, and just when I was getting gas!

     - Recently the new President of Trinity Bible College came to spend some time with our Presbyters in Nebraska. He told the story about when he was the founder of Africa's School of Missions. He had a good friend that had recently become a Christian. He was a very wealthy man and he invited the future President and his wife to one of his resorts to talk. As they sat on top of cliff overlooking the property, he told him that everything he could see was his. The friend gave the entire gorgeous resort to him for use as a Bible College. That couple made a commitment to give half of all they possessed back to God.

2). Blog Entry: The Splinter
     - The other day I woke up and I had a small splinter on the tip of my index finger on my left hand. I didn't think much of it, but when I went to dig it out, it wouldn't budge. It went quite deep. My wife tried to help but we couldn't move it. I just threw a bandaid on it, with some Neosporin, and hoped for the best. Later in the day, I kept working at it, because it was difficult to do my work on the computer with the bandaid. My assistant Brian said I just wait until it festers and falls out. But I found that it became all I could think about, capturing all of my attention. I worked throughout the evening, plodding, drawing blood several times, until finally it slid out - freedom!
     - It's amazing how that little sliver caused so much frustration in my life. Though a week ago, even as I type this I can still feel a slight pain in my finger. Two lessons I took away from this: sometimes I let the smallest things take too much of my attention. But the reserve is true too: sometimes the smallest things can do big exploits. It just depends on which perspective you have!

2). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Divorce
This morning my children and I had a devotion at breakfast from Matthew 19, dealing with divorce. Later, at the gym, a celebrity was being interviewed on a morning talk show. He mentioned that he'd been married for 50 years, the host's asked if it was to the same lady, and after he answered 'yes' they laughed. Divorce is so commonplace that a strong marriage is a laughingstock in our society.
We need to set a good example of a strong marriage to our students. I know not all of us our married, but even those that are single can help students understand that God's expectation is for marriage to be a lifelong commitment. This starts with honoring that expectation ourselves. We also must make sure to let our students see us love our spouses, honor them publicly, hold to definite standards in our contact with the opposite sex, and set aside time that belongs to my family away from the group. For single leaders, finding married couples to serve on your team can help in completing these tasks.
When talking about marriage, we can't condone divorce. God allows for divorce only in situations with marital unfaithfulness, but that should never be a goal to 'just get out'. In a society which breeds 'quitters', we must emphasize commitment always. At the same time, we must acknowledge that most of our students have been touched by divorce, with either their own parents, aunts and uncles, brothers and sisters, and even the families of friends. We must allow for time to minister to them, help them deal with their situations and feelings, encourage them not to judge those who are divorced but pray for them, teach that people who have been divorced can still be sanctified and move on in God's will, and teach them to be people of commitment in all areas, people that never quit.
The best way to help your students develop healthy relationships is to show them what it looks like, because in today's culture, you might be the only example they see.

2). Blog Entry: Life Lessons
     - This past week, my son Eric had his last 7th grade football game. This was his first year going out for the sport, so I was happy that he made it through the entire season. He had a huge learning curve to climb, but he stuck with it and did well. He was normally a B team sub in, but played quite a bit during the last game. I taught him a few defensive linemen moves, which he perfected, but he had yet to record his first tackle. I had prayed secretly that he would make a tackle, but the B team came and went without one.
We stuck around to watch the A game like normal, but I got in a discussion with other parents around me until the end of the game. Once it finished, Eric came running over to me with a huge smile on his face. He had gotten into the game during the last drive of the other team. They were trying to catch up and score, so they had put one of their big linemen in a running back and no one could stop him. The coach looked at Eric, strong and sturdy, and sent him in to plug the hole. The last play of the game, the running back met Eric on the field, and Eric knocked him over to the ground, his first tackle!
      - I was talking, having given up on my prayer, but God still allowed Eric an incredible moment to get a tackle in an A game. Don't give up on God, He hears our prayers and cares enough to do the right thing.

He wanted to start a medicine ministry, distributing medicine to children in need all around the world. After only a few months, he got a call from a country that needed a very specific medicine. He didn't currently have any, but he prayed with the man on the phone and hung up, ready to begin his search. Almost immediately, he got a call from a company on the other side of the nation that asked if he could use some volume of a particular medicine, the exact kind that had just been requested. He later found out that this company was one of only 2 companies that produced this drug in the world. The medicine was delivered and children were saved.

2). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner
     - Prayer is one of the pillars of a strong relationship with God. Teaching students how to pray is an important part of youth ministry. They learn as much from your teaching as from your example. Here's some ideas on incorporating prayer into your regular youth ministry schedules:
     - Pre-Service Prayer - maybe in a separate room, low lights, music in the background, come together at the end to pray in a group, assign student leaders/campus missionaries to attend, have a leader organize it
     - Prayer Zone Partners - a great way to utilize prayer teams from your church. Recruit adults and parents to pray regularly for your students and their schools. Promote on Sunday mornings. Allow a leader to oversee this and send out monthly reports to all those involved.
     - Altar Calls - Several moments of prayer at the altars will also nurture an atmosphere of prayer with your students. Even with generic teaching topics, open the altars for students that want prayer. Don't be afraid to incorporate it into worship. Make specific requests based on local events and circumstances.
     - Prayer Teams - A great way to develop student leaders. Invite quality students to be helpers during altar calls and prayer times. Assign a specific time during the week that they will pray.
     - Prayer Challenges - Give your students an assignment to look for prayer opportunities throughout the week (praying for someone hurt, before a meal, need in the school, waitress at a restaurant, after a game, etc.). Have them share their stories in the group the next week

2). Blog Entry: Life Lessons
     - Hard work isn't easy. That's why it's called hard. This past weekend, my assistant Brian taught me how to roof a house. We had an insurance settlement to fix our roof and Brian used to co-own a roofing company in Gering. He helped us put a new roof on our house and shed, along with a few friends. One  friend named Matt came over from 7am till 8pm on Saturday without expecting anything in return. Every part of my body is sore, but we saved some money and we have a new roof. Nebraska is full of people that know how to work hard, and if we want to be effective in reaching them, we have to work hard with them as well.
