NYM Update

2). Blog Entry: Life Lessons
One of our new holiday traditions when we get together with my wife's family is a game called Meal or No Meal. The cousins will divide into a boys and girls teams and they make a meal separately for the adults. We eat them at the same time and vote on which was best based mostly on taste, but also on presentation and creativity. We did a dessert round before Christmas and the boys took home the crown. Yesterday, we planned to do an entree round but moments before the competition the girls defaulted. My son and his team planned to continue forward with their meal, but soon it was only my son Ryan in the kitchen preparing Orange Julius' and Pizza Cones. I thought he'd give up on his own, but he kept soldiering on, committed to finishing what he had promised to do. I was so proud, I even went in the kitchen and helped (a huge step of faith). LIFE LESSON - Don't quit on your commitments , even if everyone around you does and you have to finish alone.

NYM Update

1). Song of the Day: TobyMac - Christmas This Year

2). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Worship
As a member of our district office, I'm increasingly getting requests from churches and leaders that need help with worship; looking for musicians, singers, and especially leaders. As I've traveled church to church, this is an area that is quite diverse in Nebraska. The worship setting in one place can be drastically different from another. It also is often a divisive subject, with so many opinions about styles and song preferences. Often the worship team/leader can influence a congregation just as must as the pastor. And two of the most important reasons I here of people either choosing to leave or stay at a church are whether they feel like the belong with the other people, and whether they enjoy the music and worship time. With that in mind, here are some ideas to help us improve on our worship abilities in the NE District:
      - Budget for a worship leader. Whether full-time, part-time, or even a stipend, consider investing in the personnel that oversee this influential part of your church services. The three most popular positions for additional staff are working with children, youth, or worship. If you have to choose, ask yourself which is most important of establishing your overall vision and influencing the direction of the church as a whole. Teenagers that visit your youth ministry and families with young kids will probably have a tendency to plug into the life of the overall church if they are happy with the worship experience on Sundays.
     - Ask your worship personnel to assist with Sundays as well as mid-week activities; especially those that work with children and youth
     - The Worship Leader doesn't just lead the church in songs for services, but also in the development of worship as a whole. This would include teaching a lifestyle of worship, exploring new avenues of worship expression, and training young people and adults alike in common worship skills like singing, instruments, sound and video controls, etc.
     - Rather than using your best musicians just for performance, ask them to consider committing some time to training those under them to improve.
     - Mix it up! Use variety both in song selection, placement of songs and music in the services, use of hymns and older church anthems, the stage setup with placement of musicians and singers, dressing with different styles and fashions representative of your church body, and even showing a few music videos and drama sketches from time to time.
      - Partner with your local schools and colleges to provide your church as an outlet for their students to expand their musical abilities through live experiences.
      - Prioritize programs that encourage the arts in your teens and kids, like Fun and Fine Arts.

3). Ministry of the Day: Background Checks - As we enter the new year, it's a good idea to update your legal protections and provide background checks on all leaders that work with teens and kids.

2). Blog Entry: Life Lessons
This past Sunday I had the privilege of being on our worship team for church. I joined a few others, including a couple both on the team; she on a mic and he on the drums. During soundcheck, she was checking her mic and the sound man asked if any of us needed more of her voice in our monitors. He asked the drummer, and he said 'no, you can take her out of my monitor completely.' We began to laugh at the irony of the husband asking for his wife's voice to be silenced, and after we did, he chimed in again, 'Hey, this is my only chance.' We laughed our heads off because we knew they were just joking around.

NYM Update

1). Song of the Day: Hillsong Young and Free - Alive

2). Blog Entry: Leader's Corner - Parenting
Many youth ministries only work with students, but we should strive to help the whole family. One of the most influential relationships in a young person's life is with their parents/guardians. We need to do all we can to bring them into the discipleship process and give them tools to do their job well. Ultimately, they are responsible to God for their kids before us. Here's some tips:
      - Most youth pastors aren't old enough to have teenagers of their own. Ask your pastor, or a strong parent in the church to help followup with the parents of visitors by sending them cards and making calls and visits.
      - Once a quarter host a parent's luncheon after a Sunday service to invite parents out and discuss things going on with the youth.
      - Mobilize a parents leadership team composed of several parents that can help put together a monthly parent's email, a parent's newsletter, recruit parents for certain ministry roles like setup, snacks, decorations, followup with adults, organizing trips and events, etc.
      - Share these parenting news items from Mark Batterson, in 'Praying Circles around your kids'- 1). You'll make a lot of mistakes, 2) You're worst mistakes double as your greatest opportunities, 3) Prayer covers a multitude of sins, and 4) The main three words of parenting are please, sorry, and thanks
      - Get involved with programs like Fine Arts and Bible Quiz which are designed for parents and adults to get involved and help as trainers, coaches, etc.
      - Mark on your calendar their birthdays and send them cards and updates on their kids.
      - Develop a blog/FB Group where you post pics and testimonies and let parents join in to stay up to date on what's happening in your ministry.
      - Just as you give gifts to First Time visitors, send a good parenting book to the parents of first time visitors.

NYM Update

1). Song of the Day: Anthem Lights - Simple Little Christmas

2). Blog Entry: Life Lessons
Recently, we got a little snow in Nebraska. My kids love it, but me - not so much. It's cold, it causes dangerous driving situations and cancelled events, and takes my time in removing it from my driveway. But as I was driving by some stores in the snow, I looked up and saw a dad and his son entering the business. The son suddenly stopped and the dad tugged at him to come along, with an annoyed look on his face. But then as I looked at the son, quickly before he followed in tow, I saw that he was looking up into the sky. With his mouth open and a look of joy, he was trying to catch snowflakes in his mouth, completely happy. That image stuck with me as an encouragement for me to look past the inconvenience of the snow and enjoy the fun aspects of it like a child. Sometimes if we just slow down and choose to enjoy the moment, we'll appreciate it better in our lives.

As we end the current year and look to start a new semester of school in January, you may have a student or two that you can encourage to begin a Bible Club on their campus - what a great resolution for 2014! Here's some tips on starting a club from Kyle Embry (Youth Alive Missionary of North Texas and next year's Eastern Convention Speaker), author of 'Hidden in Plain Sight':

1. Find a teacher willing to let you use their classroom.
2. Meet with the principal to ask permission. Have specific details ready. Youth pastors should be willing to go to if need be.
3. Find another student to partner with.
4. Follow a monthly plan: week 1 - watch a video (I am Second), week 2 - youth pastor speaks, week 3 - student leader speaks, week 4 - special service Project or fun activity

1). Song of the Day: Esterlyn - Psalm 23

2). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Directions
This past week we were in Bellevue for the Thanksgiving Holiday. On Wednesday night, we were on our way to Bellevue Christian Center to drop off some food for their annual Thanksgiving Meal for the community. Several hundred people come and enjoy a free meal and fellowship with the church. About two blocks away, we were stopped at an intersection as an ambulance came blaring through with it's lights blazing. We followed it and watched as it drove past the church, relieved that it wasn't someone at the big event. Seconds later, we saw the ambulance heading back towards us, and pull into the parking lot. Fortunately, it wasn't a very serious situation and someone had fallen and hit their head on the concrete. In critical moments it's important to get clear instructions and directions so you don't miss a turn and get where you need to be on time and ready to go.

1). Song of the Day: Hillsong Young and Free - Sinking Deep

2). Blog Entry: Leader's Corner
One of the things common to all youth and kids leaders is that they need to prepare messages for their students. Most of the time, this occurs on a weekly basis and some may plan out series or themes months and even years in advance. Here's some great message constructing tips from Doug Fields in the book, 'Speaking to Teenagers':

1. Develop your Takeaway key phrase, something easy to remember
2. Discern why they need to hear it, giving it purpose
3. Decide how to say it the right way
4. Discover how to provoke their interest with the phrase
5. Determine what needs to be illustrated to help drive the point home
6. Deliberate over its connection with both students and leaders
7. Delay your final edits until you've had some time to live with it for a bit.
8. Depend on God's power, the ultimate source of all effectiveness in ministry

NYM Update

1). Song of the Day: Matt Redman - 10,000 Reasons

2). Blog Entry: Life Lessons
This past week I had surgery on my right knee. It was a scope procedure, so I was an outpatient and have spent the last 5 days recovering at home. This wasn't my first knee surgery, so I knew what to expect but it still caught me off guard. I've had difficulty sleeping through the night because I can't change positions and move my leg. The medicine was so powerful, not only did it take my pain away, but it made me quite nauseous. The doctors said I wasn't eating enough to fight the nausea. After 3 days, I removed my leg wrap and changed my bandages, which gave me some relief from the pressure on my knee. But then later in the day I was feeling very sick and my leg was throbbing. It was the most pain I experienced in the process of recovery and yet the next morning I woke up much better, able to put a little pressure on my leg when walking for the first time. The greatest pain came before the greatest recovery. I had to get through the pain to truly appreciate the restoration of my knee. Sometimes, that's true in life as well.

NYM Update

1). Song of the Day: Hillsong - Christ is Enough for Me

2). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner
This past Monday I had a coaching session with some other pastors and we discussed what roles would be appropriate to allow pre-Christians to serve in. There are some that might think they shouldn't serve at all, but others believe it as a viable way of helping them get closer to a commitment to Christ. There are many levels on the process of discipleship and once the seed has been planted in someone's heart, they are on that process. It may take months or years, but they are heading toward a commitment, and we can help them get there. Overall, we agreed and felt there are several serving roles that don't necessarily influence leadership over others but provide an important element of the body of Christ. Specifically we mentioned set designs, labor projects, and building maintenance. Here's a list of jobs that Andy Stanley mentions in his book, 'Deep and Wide':

- guest services
- service projects
- audio/visual engineers
- bands
- create and build sets
- edit and produce videos
- acting

NYM Update

1). Song of the Day: Mercy Me - Shake

2). Blog Entry: Life Lessons
Good communication is essential to good results. This past weekend we had our Western Youth Convention in North Platte, NE. Because it is two weeks after the Eastern Convention, we have to be careful how we handle our pre ordered Tshirts, making sure we have enough for both groups. I told some girls at the Tshirt booth to set aside a certain number to make sure we were ready. They came back to me and told me that we had already run out and wouldn't have enough. It didn't make sense - I was certain I had planned appropriately. Later, we found out that the Tshirts had already been set aside by a different volunteer who had been asked to do it by my assistant, who read my note to get it done! Over-communicating actually bit me back, but I'd rather set aside twice as many shirts than not have enough when needed. We must learn to communicate often and regularly if we want great results.

2). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner
We all should work together in a team. Together is better. Maybe you feel like you are good enough that you don't need others. Even if that is the case, then they need you! One of the challenges is recruiting people to be a part of your team. Some of us are in situations where the team members are a challenge for us because of different circumstances and strong personalities. Here's some rules Aubrey Malphurs gives in his book 'Advanced Strategic Planning' for building a strong team:

1. Cultivate of vulnerability based trust
2. Engage in robust dialogue
3. Lead by consensus
4. Confront members about inappropriate behaviors

NYM Update

1). Song of the Day: Jason Gray - For the First Time Again

2). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Remember
Yesterday, my family and I went with my mother-in-law to visit the gravesite of my Father-in-Law, Bob Whearty. He went to be with the Lord April 28, earlier this year. It was our first time back at the cemetery and we were able to see the tombstone for the first time as well. It was a bit surreal, and it looked very nice and honorable, but it was hard to feel good about it. I asked my Mother-in-law if she had gone back before and she had, but she was very disturbed because there was no tombstone or marker of any kind. The grass had grown over the area and she couldn't even tell where he was. That caused her much grief, as if she would forget him and not remember. With the tombstone in place, we have a memorial that we can visit and remember our loved one. It's important for us to set up memorials in our lives to remember the great people and the great moments that God used to make us the people we are today, and the people we are becoming day by day.

2). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - This past weekend was our Eastern Youth Convention at Bellevue Christian Center. Our guest speaker, Tom Groot (Ohio DYD) interacted with a student from Bellevue in front of everyone Friday night in a fun illustration. The next day, my family and his went out to lunch together. We realized as we were eating that the host helping us out was actually the girl from the night before, working away. Later in the day, at our last service, we looked over and saw her there again, leaving work early to come finish out convention with everyone. As our speaker was talking about doing everything with excellence - we saw it lived out by this student in front of our eyes. Sometimes the best messages are lived out without ever saying a word.

Acts 15 shows a time when the early church needed to resolve a problem. We all have disagreements in our churches and we need to learn to figure them out in a healthy way. Here's a guideline found in this chapter than can direct us accordingly...

NYM Update

1). Song of the Day: JJ Weeks Band - Let Them See You

2). Blog Entry: Life Lessons
Recently I was in a meeting of key leaders from all across Nebraska. We were having a devotional time and my friend Randy was called on to read John 13:21, which reads 'After he had said this, Jesus was troubled in spirit and testified, “Very truly I tell you, one of you is going to betray me.”' Though, when he first read it he accidentally said the word 'terrified' instead of 'testified'. Obviously, it was a quick mistake that was immediately remedied, but we laughed at the implications. It showed how easy it is for people to intentionally twist the Word of God to meet their own needs just be changing one simple word. We must be careful to keep God's Word at all levels and have integrity when interpreting what God means and living it out.

NYM Update

1). Song of the Day: Royal - Praise Him

2). Leaders Corner - Messy Churches
In Youth and Kids Ministries, often we are working in less than desirable environments. It's not because ministry to young people isn't a priority, but many times it's because our ministries tend to have the most impact on a building and meeting space. Regardless, we must do all we can to make our space have a pleasant appearance, and here's why:

Priorities communicated in messy churches (according to Andy Stanley, Deep and Wide)
1. We aren't expecting guests
2. What we do here is not that important
3. We expect somebody to clean up after us
4. We don't take pride in our church
