Sometimes the word 'numbers' can be a bad word in ministry circles. But tracking important numbers can help us truly analyze the health of our youth ministry in the local context. Here are some average numbers to use as a guide when counting important figures in your youth ministry:
   - For the youth budget, $1,000 to $1,500 per student
   - One full time staff person for every 50 youth
   - One adult leader for every 5 students
   - Youth Groups should be at least 10% of the worshipping congregation
   - A common 20% ceiling on how much they can grow
(Exceptions - 12 or less students can have less financial needs, churches with one high school/jr. high in town can be much larger, some increases in these numbers can offset each other)

     - God is always in control. I heard this story from a pastor's wife yesterday. She had lost a ring and prayed to God to help her find it. It was several months down the road and she had been driving with a dog in her car. She smelled a horrible smell and saw one of its' droppings in the car. She gathered it together and saw something shiny in it. Sure enough, it contained the lost ring!

     - Here are some great tips for communicating to kids:

Communicating to kids in large group setting.
- Always maintain eye contact
- Don’t stay in the Safety Zone - One of the best ways to get the attention of you kids is not yelling at them but by getting quiet.
- Don’t just give kids facts your information will not be life changing if it conveyed in the context of a story.
- Talk to kids like people not babies
- Use massive amounts of energy.
- Help kids focus – Use lights, segments and music
- Be relevant – Know what kids like now don’t use examples from when you were a kid.
- Use your Bible – Bring it on stage.
- Distill truth don’t simplify it.
- Always elevate Christ

Communicating to kids in a small group
- Listen – Kids want to talk
- Know your lesson well
- Take every question seriously.
- Be there for the families of you small group kids.

Communicating to kids one-on-one
- Get down to their eye level
- Make sure you always greet the kids before the parents.

This past weekend our office assistant Heather moved to Grand Island. She had been living out of town for the first year of her employment so this was a good day for her to get closer. I called several friends from my church and they showed up. We were able to move her from her storage locker to her apartment in just about 90 minutes. Afterward, we enjoyed some food together before we left to go our separate ways. This is the church in action. Working together to help out a friend. Enjoying each other's company. Showing up when asked for help. Being a team!

2). Blog Entry: Life Lessons
This past week, I went in early to the gym as is my normal weekday routine when I'm home. Usually the gym is pretty vacant, as was the case that day, except for a visitor. Upon further inspection, he wound up being the parent of one of my former junior high school students from youth ministry at Bellevue Christian Center. As we talked and caught up, I found out that his son went into Missions Work and had been in Africa for the last 3 years. What an encouragement to hear that all the time spent building his faith and discipling him paid off. We may not see all the fruit of our work right now, but God will still take what we've done for Him and do great things down the road.

2). Blog Entry: Life Lessons
     - This past Sunday, I was preparing to go to church with my kids in Grand Island. My wife was still back with her family in Omaha over the holidays, so I was flying solo. On the way to the building, I asked the kids if they'd be willing to sit with me, but they refused, choosing to be with their friends instead. I found a friend as well and sat on the opposite side of the congregation from where I normally sit. After worship and announcement, the time for offering came and I noticed that both of my boys were ushers on the other side of the church. I made eye contact with both of them and enough non-verbal communication was made where they could understand I was proud of them for volunteering to help. I wouldn't have been able to see them do that had I sat in my normal section. Sometimes, we need to rearrange our perspective to see things in a new light.
