Building a Team - At our Youth Pastors Retreat last weekend, we had some round table discussions about different topics. Someone would take notes while everyone would add to discussion. Here are the notes from one table talking about building a team:

- How to manage the youth leaders: Discipleship, Getting them to see their gifts and use the, Getting them to take ownership, Empower the leaders- Get them to share your passion for youth.
- Find what works for your group and church

NYM Update

1). Song of the Day: Anthem Lights - Fight Forever

2). Blog Entry: Life Lessons
This past weekend was our annual youth pastors retreat in Grand Island. We had several people come out for various portions of the weekend and enjoy our time together full of training and fun. Friday afternoon, a few of us went to the State Fair on it's first day of operation. I wore tennis shoes, but many had flip flops on for a hot day. We walked all throughout the animal exhibit halls and it was quite dirty with stuff that comes with the animals. I heard many complaining about the mess, but I was fine with my shoes. When I had put on my shoes, I had remembered the last time I went with flip flops and how horrible it was. This time I came prepared. It's important for us to think ahead, learn from our mistakes, and be prepared. It will make for a much better experience overall.

NYM Update

1). Song of the Day: Stellar Kart - Criminals and Kings

2). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Followup
Here are 5 things that youth ministries should consider when reaching out to visitors and guests:
     1. Time is of the Essence - the longer you wait to reach out, the longer they have to forget about your group and move on to other things
     2. Students reach students - parents may not be comfortable with an adult calling or visiting the house for their teenager. This is a great area where your students can be involved in a leadership role. Assign them to followup with guests.
     3. Technology is your friend - Utilize the different media tools that you have for staying in touch; ipods and texts, social media, instagram and twitter, etc. At the same time, don't neglect the tried and true methods either: postcards, emails, calls, personal visits.
     4. Provide an Incentive - Help them with a good reason to come back and visit again. Maybe a special treat or award, maybe a group project that they are contributing to, a discussion that perks their interest, etc.
     5. Nobody likes a heckler - We can go overboard when we reach out as well. Pursue them, but give them space to make their own decision; even God reaches out this way.

What are some other pointers to help with outreach that you can think of?

NYM Update

1). Song of the Day: Switchfoot - We Are One Tonight

2). Blog Entry: Life Lessons
     - This past weekend was my 16 year anniversary with my wife Kim. We went out to Red Lobster for dinner and then enjoyed the movie 'The Butler' before returning home. It was a great time of enjoying each other and celebrating a great life together. The past year has been a tough one for us, full of loss, challenge, and struggle, but we're still strong as a couple. It's great to go through life with someone that stays by my side through it all. It's more enjoyable to go through life together. This is why it's so important to get plugged into a church and belong. When the struggles and challenges of life come against us, we need other Christians by our side to keep us strong.

NYM Update

1). Song of the Day: Matt Littlejohn Band - You Never Leave Us

2). Blog Entry: Life Lessons
This past week was our National Youth Convention and National Fine Arts in Orlando, FL. My son submitted a T-shirt Design entry which had had worked on throughout the summer. He had done well at our District Festival, but received some harsh critique from judges and wasn't sure how he would fare. With this category, we gave the shirt to them on registration day, and then waited until the end of the week to get the results. We weren't too hopeful, and Ryan was ready for the worst. Instead, when we picked up his shirt, we saw he'd received a Superior, the highest rating in Fine Arts. When the awards were given, we saw Ryan's name at #9 overall. It was a huge surprise and a great honor. Just because you've struggled before, it doesn't mean you can't overcome and prevail. Don't give up!

2). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner
We all want to help get people into ministry. Sometimes, we 'fast-track' people in the process. Many times this is looked at damaging act, but when used correctly it can be a positive thing. Here are some things that we can expect when we do that, according to Andy Stanley in his book 'Deep and Wide':

- they will be confronted with what they need to learn
- they will recognize if they've chosen an appropriate place
- we can capture their hearts, and then their hands and feet will follow

NYM Update

1). Song of the Day: JJ Weeks Band - Let Them See You

2). Blog Entry: Life Lessons
The other day I walked up to a leader that I was working with. He was having a conversation with one of his team members. The team member came to me, seemingly happy with a greeting and then asked me a question about youth ministry. I answered as honestly as I could, quickly, and then moved onto the leader I was working with and had wanted to speak to. After a few minutes, his team member walked away. I found out later that the question I had been asked was part of a cordial argument that he was having with that team member and the team member was looking to me for some ammunition on his side of the matter. I didn't know anything about it and my answer actually helped him stress his point. Had I known the entire situation I would have been more careful with my words and not put my fellow leader in a tough position. We must be slow to answer, making sure we use the right words in the right way. We also must be careful not to put people in situations that they aren't prepared for and can easily make mistakes.
