1). Blog Entry: 3 questions (from a mtg. yesterday with David Hertwick, NY DYD)
These are three unfortunate questions that we sometimes tend to use as a measure of our success in youth ministry:
     1. Do They Behave - sometimes we work hard to make sure they act like a Christian without teaching them why they should and helping them come to a place of truth on their own. We dare to develop students that look like Christians but don't have Christ on the inside.
     2. Are They Having the Right Experiences - the focus could become on big events and powerful moments without teaching them to daily seek after God and make Him a part of their everyday lives. We dare to develop students that strive for big moments but never apply it to their lives.
     3. Do We Get Along - as long as everyone is happy and having fun, we feel like we have succeeded. We dare to develop students that believe life is about happiness and they will quickly switch to whatever group accepts them as they desire.

1. Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Give it all
This past week I had the opportunity to speak at Rock Solid, the Youth Ministry at Christ's Place church in Lincoln, NE. The title of my message was All In to Give, and I encouraged everyone to go all out for giving to Speed the Light this year. It was a great night and I appreciated the invitation from Bruce Riddle, the youth pastor. The next day I got a call from a friend who asked if his teenage son could still give an offering for STL by credit card. I got ahold of him and he made a gift of $127 to STL because it was burning a hole in his pocket and he wanted to be obedient to God. LIFE LESSON - When God calls us to do something, we should make it of the highest priority until it is completed.

1). Blog Entry: Perspective - Saturday I was flying home from Wisconsin. I wanted to make sure to get home as early as possible because I had a football party planned at my house for Sunday afternoon. When I arrived at the airport, I was informed they had cancelled my flight due to snowfall. After some maneuvering, they were able to book me a different flight an hour later from an airport 40 minutes away. I was able to get a ride there and make the flight. On both the flights into Minneapolis and then Omaha, I was in the very front seat, by the window in a tight space. On the 2nd flight, an elderly man was sitting next to me and it seemed to me like he was taking all of my space along with his own. I was pretty annoyed, thinking that he had no idea the kind of travel anxiety I'd been through, but then I overhead him talking to the flight attendant. His plans earlier in the day had also been cancelled and rebooked and he was supposed to be back in Omaha at 1:30pm, after taking this trip for a funeral in the family. I felt foolish for being so annoyed and willingly gave up the space for my neighbor. Life Lesson - Sometimes if we know where people are coming from it can help us deal with less than ideal circumstances. It's all a matter of perspective.

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Two years ago, we tried to hold our Teen Bible Quiz and our Junior Bible Quiz meets together at the same location in McCook. Though the church did their absolute best, it was still just a bit too small for our needs and many people were uncomfortable. It was mentioned several times that we shouldn't put the two together again. This past weekend, we hosted another combo meet, this time at Kearney New Life. The church is set up a bit different and has several rooms that met our needs. Not one person walked away mentioning the need to split them up, and in fact many appreciated the convenience of having them together. LIFE LESSONS - We always need the get the big picture before we make a decision, because sometimes it's certain adjustable details that cause us to go a direction that may not be the best course of action.

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons
I had the chance to be on the East Coast for Christmas, visiting my brother-in-law in Massachusettes. We went to his church's Christmas Eve Candlelight Service. I sat next to a nice lady who was an immigrant from Russia. When it came time to sing some carols, she began to loudly belt out the words without shame. Her musical pitch wasn't anywhere near the chords of the songs, and her strong accent and volume made her stand out even more from other voices. Though it wasn't perfect and she didn't fit in, she didn't care; she was singing to her King. Life Lesson - Always worship God will all your heart regardless of your circumstance.
