1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Parent Ideas
Last week we had a Youth Leader's Training in Holdrege, NE. It was a great time of connecting with other leaders from around the area and growing in our ministry to youth by collaborating together. Of many subjects we spent time sharing ideas, we brainstormed about several ideas for working with the parents of teens:
    - encourage your pastor and adult leaders to reach out to the parents of visiting teens
    - communication (newsletters, home visits, meals (quarterly)
    - seminars (how to communicate with teens, preparing for college, etc,)
    - parent Facebook group,
    - recruit them to be the home front for big events (welcoming party, phone chain, etc,)
    - fine arts can be a good involvement for parents
    - special nights honoring students in front of parents (send invitations to show off the students talents (outside of church), graduations, award nights)

1). Life Lessons - This past week I had the privilege of being involved in a Seven Project School Assembly program at Central City. I had the topic of speaking about Character and Integrity. At one point, on behalf of the leaders in these students lives, I apologized for a lack of good examples of character in our world today. I went on to explain how we hear of leaders in all spheres of society that appeared to be upstanding citizens, and then later we found they were stealing money, addicted to drugs and alcohol, or other delinquent acts unbecoming a role model. Little did I know that a coach in that city was a main news piece lately because of an issue with alcohol and had been removed from his position. Needless to say, the point hit home. LIFE LESSON - Always be a person of Character and Integrity because someone is always learning from your example.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Signs of bad meetings
As part of my job I organize several leaders across the state to serve as advisory committees for youth and children's ministries. I recently held my youth committee meeting for this time of the year at Christ's Place Church in Lincoln earlier this week. I always try to confirm the date with my members, send them out my agenda a week in advance, request any additional agenda items be brought to me prior to the meeting, make all necessary documents available to them, cover the prioritized areas of our ministry, include some collaboration for fun and support, and also provide some breaks in the meeting with some readily available snacks. After the meeting, I send them out a copy of my notes with all special assignments marked on their behalf. No one wants to go to a long boring meeting. Here's some signs from the book 'Sustainable Youth Ministries' of bad meetings:
   - a loose, free-flowing unwritten agenda
   - a leader who expresses their own opinion too early
   - when anyone who questions ideas is labeled as mean-spirited
   - which everyone reports on their areas which many already know about

1). Life Lessons - Be Grateful
     - A couple of weeks ago I was driving an early morning route to Lincoln for some meetings. It was extremely cold outside and I was very uncomfortable driving so in the chill at such an early hour. Grumpy and driving down the road, I came upon a car going very slow. It took me awhile to pass him, but when I did I looked over to see what was taking them so long. The drivers side window was down and the driver had his left hand out of the window holding his rear view mirror in place. I passed him and checked myself. LIFE LESSON - When going through uncomfortable circumstances, be grateful that it's not as bad as it could be.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Biblical Principle for Gifts
I just finished a book (Rise, by David Pafford) which I am considering for a book of the month(s) for our NYM Youth Pastors. It's all about our giftedness and the art of creativity. I especially enjoyed a portion that shows how part of God's grace in our lives is the distribution of gifts to use for His glory. Here are a few good principles to consider when establishing our gifts:
A. Every person has giftedness, even nonbelievers
B. No one has all the gifts
C. There is a great diversification and unique application of the gifts
D. Some gifts cause exponential acceleration in another's giftedness
E. God distributes the gifts as he wills but it's up to us to practice and develop them

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Reaching out
Last week, we had very cold temperatures in the mornings at Grand Island, when I took my kids to school. One particular morning, it was -30 windchill; bitterly cold. As we were driving on the main road, just two blocks away, we saw a student walking. We'd seen him before, but mostly in warm temperatures. I had mentioned stopping for him before but my son didn't know who it was and was concerned that it could be awkward. But in this instance, I couldn't watch him walking in that cold weather, so we stopped for him. He gratefully jogged over to our car and jumped in. When he got inside, my son looked at him and said, 'Oh, you're in my gym class!' and they talked like old buddies the rest of the way to school. We gave him a ride the rest of the week. LIFE LESSON - Sometimes, reaching out to others isn't as hard as we make it. We simply need to start with being friendly.

Last week we had our annual ONE VOICE conference with other District Leadership Teams across the nation. One of our speakers presented some steps to take to ensure that we continue advancing in our mission:

1)The Credibility of the mission is not measured by the opinions or decisions of the people involved.
2) The journey is always more difficult than first perceived.
3) The vision does not devalue previous successes.
4) Attitudes and actions should never be determined by personal disappointments.

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Stay Hungry
I was in a special meeting last week with our National Assistant Superintendent Alton Garrison. He told the story of visiting China, and in one particular student he prayed for people and every single person fell over slain in the Spirit; literally hundreds! He later asked the pastor if he felt that every one of those moment was completely authentic and the pastor said about 70% were. Alton was surprised at his response and asked him why that might be the case. The Chinese pastor explains, 'We've taught them to be hungry. Some of them may have fallen over because they want to experience more of God. We'd rather they do that, than stand there bored and wishing they were doing something else.' How do we teach our people to stay hungry for God?
