1). Life Lessons - Overcommunicate
Last week we held our annual Fine Arts Festival in Hastings. Our main contact was the youth pastor. At the last minute, he and his family had to take a trip out of state the week prior to the event. Though the event was wonderful and the church was a very gracious host, there were a few items that would have been a little more organized if I would have over communicated to ensure we were all on the same page. This weekend we held a Children's Leaders Training in Lincoln that was well attended by several churches in Eastern, NE. I sent out many notices through emails and other means to let people know of a slight change in the location of the meeting which we were notified about shortly prior to the scheduled event. The day before the training, I emailed a few people who had confirmed their spot with individual emails to me. One particular guest thanked me for the personal note because he hadn't seen any of the other communication pieces. LIFE LESSON - Overcommunicate - don't assume everyone saw everything.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner
This past month I've encouraged our Youth Pastors on our NYM Facebook group to read the book Rise by David Pafford. In it, he helps us understand how our giftedness is an act of grace from God. Here's some of his outlined principles:

1. Every person has giftedness, even nonbelievers.
2. No one has all the gifts, though some may act like they do.
3. There is a great diversification and unique application of the gifts among us.
4. Some gifts cause exponential acceleration in another's giftedness.
5. God distributes the gifts as He wills but it's up to us to practice and develop them in our lives.

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons
Matt Richardson is one of our new missionaries, originally a youth pastor from Omaha. This past weekend, for Fine Arts, he called and asked if he could join us. Of course I said YES! Upon arriving he was great just interacting with everyone and asking if we needed anything. Sure enough, one of our judges called in with an emergency and wasn't able to come. Matt, as our former coordinator of judges, stepped right in upon request and was a valuable judge replacement. At the end of the day, I called upon to come forward and give us an update on his mission, which he did with enthusiasm, also helping encourage students to give to STL. He was a big help in a time of need. LIFE LESSON - Always pitch in and help out wherever you go.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Humility
In John 1, John the Baptist is introduced on the scene. This was during a time period when many so called prophets were revealing themselves in public and trying to draw a crowd. There had been predictions of a coming Messiah as well as other dynamic saviors, so the people were hungry for a champion. When they recognized John's power and authority they asked if he was one of the promised heroes coming their way. John humbly admitted that he wasn't, and he wasn't even worthy to take the shoes off of the one that was to come. He was only there to usher in His presence, just like us. We aren't the Savior, but we serve the Savior. It's easy for us to become distracted and sometimes feel that we deserve the praise, the accolades, the attention because of our hard work. We are only successful in the eyes of men to the degree that God has made us so. We must strive to stay humble, remember who we really are, and serve God according to His purposes, not our own. If John the Baptist did this (the one of whom Jesus said that no one who had ever been born up to that time was greater than he), we should we apply it to our lives and ministry so much more.

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Look Inside
This past weekend we had an Omaha Youth Pastor get together on Saturday night. The local Teen Challenge of the Midlands hosted the event at their place in North Omaha, near Benson High School. We met at 5pm and most people showed up near that time. My friend Todd and his wife Latoya, from Freedom Church, called a couple of times needing help to find the place. After a few calls, he wondered if his GPS was broken. Then he looked at my original text and I had given him the wrong address - 56th street instead of 58th. He was late but it was my mistake. LIFE LESSON - Don't be quick to judge others. Often the mistakes you think you notice in them are really a reflection of you.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Inviting Youth Environment
Every student wants to fit in, even if they don't show it up front. Sometimes, their first impression is that they are different from everyone else, so they stay on the outside looking in. Sometimes, our groups fit in so well that they tend to exclude newcomers and visitors. We must strive to teach our teens how to love each other and still be welcoming to new people as they arrive. The more we help get guests involved in the life of the group, the better. Inviting them to a special event, bringing them on a road trip, adding them to a lunch appointment with a group, signing them up for worship team or a creative group, recruiting them to help with setup, teardown, or audio/video needs, etc. Here's some steps from Jeanne Mayo in 'Thriving Youth Groups' for creating an inviting youth environment.

1. Begin with a vision (what do you want to accomplish)
2. Adapt your product to your market (reach them where they are at)
3. Everything you do sets the stage (the weekly meeting is only the tip of the iceberg)
4. Evaluate through the five senses (speak to them on many different levels)

1). Life Lessons - Finish Strong
This past weekend was our Junior Bible Quiz 'C' Team Finals in Omaha. This is a program for elementary kids to quiz against each other in their memorization of key parts of the Bible. The C league is a beginner league for younger kids that may not have participated in years past. One student throughout the day appeared to the be the favorite to be the Quiz Master of the day. She was obtaining many points in several rounds and seemed to be unstoppable. Her mom kept coming in between rounds, checking on her status, excited to celebrate her progress. It seemed a sure thing. But then the last round, she didn't answer many questions and only scored a few points. After checking the final scores, another student was able to sneak by her and win by a very slim margin. She'd quizzed so hard for 6 long rounds, but then seemed to just take the final round off and it cost her the victory. LIFE LESSON - Finish strong. Don't give up until it's over.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Student Prayer
'Now I lay me down to sleep, I pray the Lord....' Anyone remember this childhood bedtime prayer? Or maybe this is more familiar, 'Our Father, which art in heaven; hallowed be they name....'? We often have several prayers that we prayed repetitiously for years, sketched into our memories. Even people that have long since walked away from God and the church can remember these recited prayers. We have to teach our students to make prayer less of a recital and more of a lifestyle. They see us pray for our food, pray to begin and end services, pray for people after a message, pray for offerings. Do they ever see us pray to just be with God without requests? Do they ever see us pray in worship with thanksgiving and praise? Do they ever see us sit in God's Presence and listen in prayer? Are they ever challenged to explore the boundaries of prayer on their own? What things do you do (as a leader) to help develop the spiritual prayer life of your students? (student fasts, parent prayer chains, Prayer Zone Partners, special prayer requests, SeeYouAtThePole, praying over current events, prayer walks, etc.)

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons
This past week my daughter went in for an audition to be in the local Grand Island Theaters production of 'ANNIE'. This has been a dream for her and my wife for the past three years. They tried out in Omaha a few years back for the Broadway production, and Abby made it to a callback but that was as far as it went. This time, she also received a callback and they said it was for the purpose of selecting the final 6 orphans. We assumed that the lead role was already taken, but Abby didn't let it faze her and she went to the callback excited and ready for whatever may happen. After the callback, my wife received a call that Abby had in fact been chosen as ANNIE! It's going to be a lot of hard work these next three months, and she can't wait. LIFE LESSON - Don't give up on your dreams, even if it's several years in the making.
