Today is National Honesty Day.
It is also the birthday of Willie Nelson, American singer-songwriter, musician, actor, and activist from 1933.
Finally, it is the anniversary of Mark and Kelly Putnam (Children's Pastors in York, NE), a distinction they share with the day when U.S. President Bill Clinton became the first President to visit Northern Ireland in 1995.
1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Making 'Spiritual Hedges'
I've been reading a book by Peter Haas called 'Pharisectomy'. It deals with the Pharisee type attitudes that he sees alive in our church today. In one particular section, he deals with spiritual hedges - when churches build barriers around themselves, not interacting and working with other churches well because they're ministry methods are superior. Here's the cautions he gives for such an attitude:1. It can become a substitute for listening to the Holy Spirit (the leader knows best)
2. It can cause people to seek God's word less (the leader knows best, again)
3. It can cause churches to become elitists. ('I'm the best cuz I go to this church')
4. It can cause churches to become a hostile place for skeptics. (don't question anything or else)
5. We can become the ultimate distraction from Gods mission. (we work hard to keep our reputation)
