1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Making 'Spiritual Hedges'
I've been reading a book by Peter Haas called 'Pharisectomy'. It deals with the Pharisee type attitudes that he sees alive in our church today. In one particular section, he deals with spiritual hedges - when churches build barriers around themselves, not interacting and working with other churches well because they're ministry methods are superior. Here's the cautions he gives for such an attitude:
1. It can become a substitute for listening to the Holy Spirit (the leader knows best)
2. It can cause people to seek God's word less (the leader knows best, again)
3. It can cause churches to become elitists. ('I'm the best cuz I go to this church')
4. It can cause churches to become a hostile place for skeptics. (don't question anything or else)
5. We can become the ultimate distraction from Gods mission. (we work hard to keep our reputation)

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Undercover?
This past weekend my daughter performed in the opening performances of her play, 'Annie'. It's been a tremendous amount of fun and I've been able to volunteer as a stagehand. For two of the three performances, I've carried a desk and some chairs on and off, helping to setup the orphanage scene. I got to know several of the adult actors and crew while participating in the play. We had a party after the afternoon performance yesterday at one of the participants' houses. After eating some food and mingling a bit more than usual, I discovered that several of the performers were either pastor's themselves, or married to a pastor in the city. We were getting along and enjoying each other's company and didn't even know that we were sharing the same call in life. LIFE LESSON - Don't be afraid to get out in your community and build connections with people outside of your church.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Deeper Faith in a Shallow World
Here's another round table subject that was brought up at the Youth Pastors Summit in Minneapolis last month, and some excerpts from the discussion:
     - We all need 5 to 7 mentors in life to make it in our faith
     - What is elemental to your service and what is secondary?
     - Youth ministry is mentoring
     - Make your services the lab and get your students to talk about their faith
     - We must teach Apologetics to teens in our non Christian culture
     - Parents provide natural infrastructure for volunteer leadership
     - Humility is the ramp to all other spiritual virtues
     - When making important changes/updates, say: 'We're not walking away from what matters, we're just trying to do it better'

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Speak Up
Last week I was doing my daily visit to my local gym. I had a late night of travel so I was going to the gym a little later than normal. Most of the regulars I was used to interacting with weren't there, but a new crop of people were working out. Some of them I recognized from a couple years back when I used to workout regularly at this gym during this hour. A particular lady caught my eye named Mary. Mary is probably 80 and likes to walk and talk. She's a little hard of hearing so her speech is quite loud, loud enough to hear herself. I usually try to avoid her because I like to get in, do my work, and get out, but I couldn't this time. As I walked past her she noticed the Christian shirt I was wearing  (a tshirt from the youth group in West Point, NE), and asked me if I was a Christian. That began a conversation about our faith, the churches we attend, my role as an ordained minister, and even a common friend that works every year at our camp. Mary was greatly encouraged and mentioned that it was very rare to find another Christian there at the gym. Here, I'd been working out with her and near her for years and never even knew it. LIFE LESSON - Don't be afraid to speak up. You'll find other Christian friends nearby, and maybe help develop some as well.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Social Media in Youth Ministry
A few weeks ago, I had the chance to be involved in a Youth Leadership Summit at North Central University. We did several round table discussions about relevant topics. The first topic we covered was Social Media in Youth Ministry and here are some of my takeaways from the conversation:

The Changing face of youth culture
- The greatest mission field in America can be social media
- Your online posts go out to around 500 people in an instant
- We need to be digitally responsible
- Rules = 2 posts a day or words or pictures, don't allowed to reply to arguments,
- Social media has no race in the reception
- Use Instagram for emotion, FB group for community, Twitter for information,
- How do we digitally include everyone?
- Recruit social media missionaries or develop online mission trips
- Assign a social media leader team
- Follow student council twitters and retweets
- Students know the answers to the questions but don't know how to answer the question
- Ideas: Selfie Wednesdays, Who did you meet Pics
- We must help establish basic rules for a non-parented culture
- Students follow parents who have reckless digital lives
- Students are the experts on the subject matter
- Deliberate randomness is attractive to students in today's culture
- Contract to be above suspicion

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Hard Work
This past weekend we had our annual finals for the A Team of Junior Bible Quiz. These elementary students have been studying hundreds of Bible Questions and verses over the past several months and it all led to this. It was a long day at the Grand Island E Free church, with each team quizzing 8 times, when we used to only do an average of 6 meets a day. We had three teams that had tied at the end of the day with one loss each, and each time lost in a circle to the other teams. I was so proud of all of these students and their hard work to learn God's Word. LIFE LESSON - We're never too young to learn the value of hard work in reaching our goals.

His speaking style is quite enjoyable and makes for easy listening, full of stories, quick anecdotes, and timeless truths. 1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Last week I took some youth pastors to North Central University for a Youth Pastors Summit. We hung out at one of the leaders downtown loft during the evening. In the basement he told us that the room we were hanging out in used to be their bedroom. One night, in the middle of the night they woke up and were wet. With the bed right up by the window, they noticed that water had been building up by the window outside and was leaking in. Just in case something happened, the man got his wife up and they headed upstairs. Just as they hit the middle stair they looked back and saw the window shatter, several gallons of water came gushing in slamming their bed agains the far wall. Had they stayed in bed, they would have been thrown across the room and possibly seriously injured. No one likes waking up at night, but they were grateful because it saved their lives. 1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - How to avoid silos
Silos are large bins that can hold different types of crops and supplies for farmers. They keep different materials from mixing. This is an analogy that is common to describe ministries in churches that don't work together and become an island unto themselves. Here's a few suggestions for how to avoid being a 'silo' ministry, by Brian Dollar in his book 'I Blew It':
1. Read all the information
2. Ask questions
3. Watch or listen to the Sunday morning service
4. Pay attention in staff meetings
5. Pray regularly for your leaders
