1). Blog Entry: Leader's Corner - Developing Leaders
While at National Fine Arts, I've been able to reconnect with several people I haven't seen in a long time. Yesterday morning I had breakfast with a student I had met at a youth camp many years ago. I discovered that he was now the youth leader over his group, in charge of bringing them to Nationals. Later in the Exhibit Hall, I ran into Dan, a former youth pastor from Omaha. He is now a senior pastor in Pennsylvania, and he introduced me to his youth leader, who again was raised up from within his youth ministry there. A great leadership principal that we should strive to apply in our ministries is to raise up the next possible leader from within. Work hard to build leaders that can run with the program and develop it further if God should move you on. Develop a volunteer leadership team and assign them regular jobs to complete together. Build a student leadership platform that allows students to thrive amongst their peers. Hone in on one or two of those excelling students and spend more time and resource helping them grow in leadership. Share your responsibilities with others so they have a chance to see what it's like and lead in those arenas. Those that stay around will be great leadership material for the future, and those that move on will have valuable leadership skills to bring with them wherever they go.

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Gray Areas
Recently I had the chance to drive through Chicago. It was much higher paced and busier than I'm used to in Grand Island, and mostly any city in Nebraska. What was interesting was how fast almost ever car drove beyond the posted Speed Limit. Though the posted limit was 55 I found myself pushing 60, maybe 65 at times while several cars were still speeding by me. There may have been some traveling fast for emergency purposes, but the vast majority were going fast because 'that's what everyone does in Chicago'. Whether or not you speed in the same situations, there is a principle that applies in our everyday lives as well. Maybe we don't consider ourselves great rule breakers, but maybe there are areas where we've allowed certain rule violations that are socially acceptable just to fit in. Could there be areas in our lives where we've crossed the line, but it seems OK because 'everyone else does'?

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Helping High Schoolers
High School is supposed to prepare teens for their future as individual adults, but many teens make decisions that negatively impact their future during this time. As youth leaders and Pastors, we must help them navigate through this period with wisdom and holiness. Here's a couple tips from Teenhelp.com to help us in this task:
     - Encourage them to make goals for themselves and write them down
     - Remind them that grades are important and they do matter
     - Begin exploring possible career interests and options now
     - Strongly lead them to go to college and/or receive technical training after High School
     - Teach them to be willing to sacrifice for their education
     - Help them get involved in one or two extra-curricular activities
     - Model driving carefully and taking care of your physical health
     - Show them how to make friends that encourage them to do their best

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons
Last week, I had the chance to work in my office with my wife. She was filling in for the rest of our office staff that was out on vacation. Other than my boss, we were the only ones in the office. Normally, our office doesn't have a lot of activity because our business mostly occurs outside the office, on the road. Kim has seen me with limited office activity over the several years I've been the District Youth Director of Nebraska, so she wasn't expecting much work. But the first day we came in together, I received two phone calls in the first five minutes: she hadn't even put all of her things down yet after walking in when she answered the phone on my behalf. It made it appear as if I was very busy at the office, when in fact I had been gone the previous week at a camp in Ohio and after checking my office phone, hadn't received even one message during that time. LIFE LESSON - Perspective changes our outlook. What we are used to can change in an instant with just a few small surprises.

1). Blog Entry: Leader's Corner
This past week I had the chance to go to Ohio and speak at their district Jr. High Camp. It was a wonderful time of ministry, connecting with leaders from their region, and discovering new ideas for our own camps in Nebraska. I've been so blessed to visit a camp or two outside of our own each year as a speaker, and I've come back with several new thoughts that have improved our camp experience in NE. Could this be a possibility for local church leaders and pastors to implement in their own journey as well? What if you and a fellow pastor friend planned a time once or twice a year to leave your own ministry and visit another one nearby to connect and gather new thoughts and ideas? How can we as a district help facilitate these opportunities across our state and region?

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Riding the Bench
I had the chance to watch the the finals of the World Cup Soccer Tournament yesterday on TV. Germany faced off against Argentina and it was a great match. It remained scoreless until the late minutes, as most great matches in soccer do. Finally Germany was able to get a score with a little less than 5 minutes in the game. It was a player that hadn't started the game and had only come in during the latter portion. He didn't come out on the field at the beginning as part of the starters, enjoying the incredible starting ceremonies that accompany international soccer matches. He didn't get in during the first half or most of the 2nd, but stayed on the bench keeping himself ready in case he had a chance. And later, he was the hero. LIFE LESSON - Even if you are riding the bench now, stay ready, because your chance to shine may come.

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons
Plan Ahead - I left for an early flight to Ohio to speak at a Jr. High Camp. I planned my time so that I'd have plenty of time in the morning, with an intent to stop by a fast food place for a quick bite on my way to the airport. When I woke up, my throat was scratchy, so I ran through Walmart looking for some cheap capsules to help. After picking out my selection, I went to the counter to see that their credit card machines were down and they were only accepting cash, of which I had none. I then ran to a nearby Pharmacy and grabbed the needed medicine. I looked at the time and I had just enough time to get to the airport and not be rushed. I didn't get the extra food that I was wanting, but I was able to get the medicine and still have time to spare. 1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner
Last week we finished our 4th straight week of youth and kids camps in Nebraska. It was a great month of coming together to worship God and have tons of fun! At our Jr. High Camp the 2nd week, our speaker did an outstanding job. An usual thing occurred on Wednesday night - in the middle of his message he declared that he couldn't continue and he gave the mic to me. It was a strange event, one that had never happened in that manner with me before.
I quickly tried to sum up what he had been saying and then sent us to meet in our dorm groups with our dorm leaders to discuss and begin praying for the Holy Spirit. We resumed our meeting at the altar in a few minutes and had an outstanding time of prayer and worship before God.
I spoke to my speaker afterward and he was so humble and apologetic. He explained that physically his body was shutting down. His heart was racing much faster than usual and he knew the words he want to speak but he couldn't get them out in a clear way.
Several people said that this was their favorite night of camp that week. I'm sure the surprise element and the spontaneous factors added to the memorable moments, but it was a challenge for me. As we processed the occurrence, it appeared that we should always be prepared for emergencies of this nature with a handful of useful tools to go to in a moment's notice. It would be wise for all of us to function with this plan as well. Possible solutions could be 1) a list of videos, 2) stay engaged as a leader and take notes so you can summarize if need be, 3) have the worship team ready with a song in an emergency situation, 4) know the theme of the night and have my own message from a previous service ready just in case, 5) get some audience feedback about what they've heard and how they've processed it so far, 6) have a few leaders ready to come up and do some Q and A on the subject with a couple of preselected questions to get things started.
What other service elements can you think of to add to this list?
