Students with special needs are in our communities, and should also be in our churches. Whereas schools are setup to help this students with specific care, often churches are left without a plan. Here are some steps leaders can take to help students with special needs:
     A. Develop a good relationship with Parents
     B. Prepare the students ahead of time
     C. Provide printed guidelines for each ministry setting
     D. Facilitate interaction with the student who struggles to communicate
     E. Remember that inclusion is more about a mindset than a perfect set of strategies

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Notes
Yesterday I took my daughter to her play practice at the Leiderkrantz German Club in Grand Island, NE. It is the headquarters for the Children's Little Theater productions that she has been involved in the past few years. On the way home, she was explaining her process. She keeps her script close to her and scribbles various notes throughout the practice as she hears her director give out orders. She writes down anything she thinks she'll need to remember for the performance. LIFE LESSON: We need to keep our Bibles close to use and take notes as our leaders are preaching, writing down things we think we'll need to remember.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Learning in School
School is a major part of every young person's life in the United States. Even if they don't all agree, this is a major blessing for our civilization. But as good as schools are, there are usually certain skills that aren't addressed regularly on our campuses. This is where a student ministry can partner with schools to give students a great learning experience. Addressing topics like computer science, time management, and study skills can supplement what students are already learning in schools, and help them be better students overall. Here's a few other items that might be opportunities for learning topics in local student ministries: Top 10 Skills we wish were taught in school, but usually aren't.

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons
This past week, my wife went to the Women's Retreat for Assemblies of God churches, in Kearney, NE. She had a great time helping out in registration, and connecting with friends from across the state. At a meal, she was explaining to the ladies that I was heading out of town for the day on Sunday to speak at a church across the state in the West. One of the ladies at the table began to explain why Kim needed to come with me. With good intentions she declared that it would be a beautiful drive because of the fall foliage and the sun rising in the west. Though well-meaning, she was mistaken; in that the drive through the sandhills is almost devoid of trees and as we all know, the sun actually rises in the east. LIFE LESSON - Some people with good intentions may advise us in ways that lead us astray; be cautious.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Preparations?
The past few days, during our NE AG Presbyter's Meetings we had an interesting devotional alluding to the balance in our lives of planning ahead and depending on the spontaneous leading of the Spirit. As Pentecostals, it's easy for us to lean more to the spontaneous unctions from the Spirit, but the Bible also has several verses that show the value of preparing for the future. I've heard speakers from conferences mention that God can anoint the message just as much as he anoints the preparations as well. In my opinion, developing a relationship with God daily and learning to lean on His Spirit for instant direction is an act of preparation for moments of decision. I believe it shouldn't be either/or but rather, we should strive to be diligent with our dependence on the Spirit in both our preparations and our presentations, as well as our follow through as well. So, where are you at on this issue? Do you lean more one way or the other?

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - The Little Things
I was sitting with Chuck, a lead pastor from Omaha. He used to pastor in Bassett, NE and while he was there he was reaching out to a kid from the community. His family wasn't involved in the church, but the kid loved coming and had given his life to God. When Chuck left the city, he remembered praying for the child and hoping that he wouldn't just fall away without another leader to reach out to him. Several years and decades later, the church in Bassett asked Chuck to come back for a church reunion celebration. Sure enough, this man stepped to the podium and began to talk about how Chuck had impacted his life. It was the same little boy he had reached out to many years ago. Later, he found out that this man was leading a Godly family as well, and had several children involved in Bible Quiz. 1). Blog Entry: Leader's Corner - Working with Lead Pastors
Almost all youth leaders and pastors serve under a lead pastor of some kind. The only exception would be those who are the lead pastor themselves. The lead pastor is responsible for the entire church and we get the privilege to serve under them and support their vision. We must do our best to understand and support their vision with the way we lead the ministry to students. Often I've witnessed youth workers that rebel against lead pastors and try to do things their own way apart from their direction. This shouldn't be. We should try to be the kind of followers that we would want to lead ourselves. If God has called us to work with the students in a local church, then He's also called us to serve the lead pastor and we should strive to marry these two initiatives together and do our best with both.

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - So Close
I was sitting with my wife in church yesterday, listening to the message. I had just finished playing drums and sat down next to her at the beginning of the sermon. We quietly caught up and she told me about the morning getting our kids ready for church. I asked if she had business later that day and she told me that she was hosting an open house in the 3 o'clock hour (my wife's a realtor). About two minutes later I heard a chuckle from her. She had been looking at her phone, where she was posting an announcement about the open house. She saw a previous advertisement she had posted from August, but it read the wrong way, 'This Sinday, August ??, open house at...' Whoops! LIFE LESSON - 1). Always proofread your work, 2). 1). Blog Entry: Leader's Corner
Earlier this week I had the chance to travel with our Superintendent to both sides of our state and host a seminar around the book MOVE. The premise of the event was to encourage our churches to take a survey that will help reveal the overall discipleship results of their congregants. The company that hosts the surveys has worked with several churches and discovered that the main spiritual activity to help inspire spiritual growth is reflection on Scripture. This isn't necessarily referring to the listening of sermons and messages on weekends, but thinking back upon those messages, and in particular the Bible passages contained within them, is the catalyst. We have to help our students get into the Word regularly, between services and on their own in their schools in their homes. What are some different things we can do to encourage them in this way...?
