We all want to have good organizations with our churches and youth/kids ministries. Here's some basic thoughts for making that happen (and more at the link above...)
     A. They empower leaders to accomplish ministry without always having to get permission.
     B. They mobilize many people rather than leaning on a select handful of talented individuals.
     C. They are established around key touch points in your organization.
     D. They are measured and monitored for trends.

1). Blog Entry: Life Lesson - Obedience
This past weekend was our Fall Youth Convention in Western NE. It was a wonderful event with several testimonies reported. On Friday night I had the chance to transition out of worship. I had everyone sit down and then I sat down on a broken chair. Using it as an illustration, I mentioned that it's hard to depend on something that isn't built right. I asked them how their lives were built, if they were on a good foundation of Christ. I used it as a chance to setup our speaker for the message later that night with an altar response, so I just closed in prayer and moved on. Yesterday, I received a text from an unknown number. It was a student saying that God touched their heart during that moment of worship and they gave their life to Christ. Praise God! LIFE LESSON: Be obedient when God asks you to move and he'll take care of the results.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner
This past weekend I needed to cancel an event due to weather. This is something that all of us will have to face if we are leaders in Nebraska. Here's a few things to consider when dealing with a tough weather situation:
     - Connect with your overseer to see what they think and what their operating policy is.
     - Develop a policy together that you adhere to in inclement weather situations
     - Publish that policy on your website and have copies available for parents to take home
     - Plan ahead and try to change the plans as early as possible to give people time to adjust
     - Play it safe; there's no reason to risk lives due to weather situations
     - Over-communicate: emails, social media posts, leader phone calls, public posts, etc.
     - Direct people to the next scheduled activity so they can look ahead.
What would you add to the list?

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons
This past weekend was our 2nd scheduled Bible Quiz Meet of this season. With a winter weather advisory in place, I chose to cancel the event. It was a difficult decision with one team that had already traveled to the area to spend the night, and the church had already set everything up for the event, involving several rooms and setup changes. But when Saturday came, it definitely felt like we made the right decision; it snowed heavy during the expected travel times and it was very slick. On the way to church I saw two different cars that had slid off the road and into ditches in a stretch of a few blocks. But even if it hadn't have snowed, was it right to cancel the event, to err on the side of safety? LIFE LESSON - Being cautious is never wrong, but seek advisors to help with your decision.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner
This weekend is our 2nd Bible Quiz Meet of the school year. This program helps students memorize the Bible in a fun and competitive way. In the past we had several churches engaged in this ministry, but that number has fallen off in recent years. Even if this program doesn't seem to work for some churches, it still accomplishes an important task for us - teaching students to memorize the Bible. How can we do that in local youth ministry context? There are several aspects to consider: 1) Use many verses in your messages and sermons, 2) Give them passages to read on their own at home, 3) Quote verses often in your conversations with teens, 4) Provide fun avenues for them to test their Bible knowledge with each other, 5) Consider challenging them to memorize a main verse from your message or series. What else would you suggest?

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Going the Extra Mile
This past week I had the chance to work at our campgrounds in Lexington. There is a popular food stop as part of our ritual when visiting the site - Tacos Y Tortas. Brian and I pulled up for a late lunch mid afternoon, and to our surprise, it was closed. We were shocked and disappointed, but quickly a truck pulled up with us. It was the owner of the restaurant. He had driven by and saw us standing there. Quickly, he came to meet us, let us in, and cooked us up our orders, before closing the shop again. When Brian asked him why, he simply said, 'You guys are good customers.' LIFE LESSON - Great customer service goes the extra mile.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner
A staple of almost every active Youth Ministry in Nebraska is some sort of weekly meeting. Most of these meetings revolve around students coming together with a leader or a leadership team, worshipping God, reading the Bible and talking about it, having some fun together, and focusing attention on reaching out to friends in their city and in their school. This may sound like an easy task, but in today's day and age, our students scheduled are jam-packed with important items, yet challenging to our traditional service system. Maybe we should start considering adding different meeting styles to help reach more students and effectively pastor the young people under our care. Here's a few ideas: Student led groups meeting before school or after school on campus, groups meeting during lunch hours, Saturday mornings, Sunday morning during traditional Sunday school hour, Google Hangouts, Facebook groups, Simulcast Video with students at home, later meetings from 8 to 9:30pm on weeknights, smaller groups that meet as a large group once a month, youth ministry apps, Sunday lunch after church groups, etc..

1). Blog Entry: Life Lesson
This past weekend, over the Halloween holiday, my wife and I had the chance to go bowling with friends from our church. I've been bowling with our kids several times over the last decade but never had my wife Kim actually bowled with us. But with our two boys away on a college visit trip, she was compelled to join the other ladies and give it a shot. Sure enough, after the first game I looked up, and my wife had won.
