1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Staying Strong
Today is New Year's Eve and many of us will be involved in celebrations tonight to ring in 2015. We also will probably partake in the ageless tradition of making new years resolutions, goals that we want to accomplish next year. I, like you, have done this many times before only to forget at this time next year what goals I originally set out to accomplish in the first place! How can we make changes that will help us stay strong over time? Here's some suggestions: 1) Don't make it a New Year's commitment - make it a new week, or new month commitment first. 2) Pick a verse that will be your verse of the year. Put it somewhere where you can read it just about every day. I keep it bookmarked as one of my favorites for the internet when I open it to work. 3) Make unselfish goals - often we only strive to change in areas that benefit us personally, but what about trying to serve others more, give more money away, or change an attitude? 4) One step at a time. Consider making one smaller goal and then accomplishing it over several periods of time before starting the next one, and then the next one, and then... 5) Track your progress daily. There's probably an app for that! I keep a file on my computer. 6) Pray about it first. Often I find myself making goals that God never really wanted me to pursue. It's bound to be much better for me in the end if I follow His leading and not just my own pursuits. What suggestions would you add to the mix?

This past weekend we had the chance as a family to go to the new movie ANNIE. This was special for us, after my daughter had the lead role in the play Annie this past Spring. We had heard some rough reviews from different sources, but we decided to check it out anyway. Once the show was done, we asked all of our family members what they thought, and it was an overwhelming anonymous YES. We all loved it. Today is Christmas Eve
It is also the birthday of American Businessman Howard Hughes from 1905.
Finally, it is the anniversary of when Christmas Island was discovered by James Cook in 1777

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner
Tonight is the an annual Christmas Eve Service. My family has been attending these for years and we love it; it's a tradition. But even traditions change from time to time. We found out that for the first time since we can remember, they are not doing a candle lighting ceremony as part of the service. When we first discovered it, we were shocked. We expressed dismay and concern, but after a few moments, I was able to step away from the situation and look at my reaction. I suddenly realized that I had become the person who refuses to try change because 'that's the way we've always done it before.' Who knows if this new format will be a success or not, but I should still be open to the change because the message is sacred but the methods are not. In this ever increasing culture, we must accept change and be ready to install new things to reach a generation that is different from the one before. In the book iY Generation, Tim Elmore lists out 4 characteristics of this generation that should compel us to seek changes to reach them more effectively:
This Generation is...
Overwhelmed - They've been eye witnesses to many tragedies over the last few decades with our instant news coverage.
Over-Connected - They are always in touch with several people with just the click of a button on screens in their lives.
Overprotected - The rules have changed and parenting styles tend to shield them from painful experiences which can teach them how to adapt in life as an adult.
Overserved - They've always been told their a winner, without really winning.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Don't Quit
As leaders, we all go through times when we feel like giving up. Maybe it's a specific tragedy or trial that spurs it on, maybe it's the mundane routine that gets to us, or maybe it's a weakness in a particular sinful area that drags us down. Whatever the reason, we must learn how to be people of commitment in a world that makes it easy to quit. Here's a few tips for overcoming this difficult times in our journey: 1). Make sure you get quality time with God. Often this area suffers when we go through tough stretches. 2). Explore a creative outlet in worship. God is a Creator. He loves to create. It brings Him joy. He's made us in His image, so when we use our creative juices it often empowers us with optimism to face current challenges more enthusiastically. 3) Take time to enjoy yourself. Whether it's a small break each day, one day a week, or a special period once a quarter. Find a hobby that you can enjoy to take your mind off the pressing issues of your life. 4). Think of your health. Often bad physical habits add to our depression in bad times. Get good sleep, eat healthy, workout. 5). Seek counsel. Go to trusted leaders and mentors to let them hear what you are going through and offer assistance. What other suggestions would you offer?

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Kindness
This past week was my daughter's first show choir concert, in conjunction with her school's Christmas concert as well. (Check it out HERE). We showed up plenty early for the performance but the auditorium was fairly packed when we arrived. I found an area near the front with several empty chairs next to a lone gentleman. I asked him if the seats were available and he gestured that they were. So as my family made there way there, a few girls showed up to sit in the seats. I told that I had already reserved them for my family, so they got up. But as they did I noticed that they were with the gentleman who had given them to us. He and his crew moved over to the side to some seats set up against the wall. I tried to give the seats back to him, but he wouldn't allow it and gladly made sure we were able to have those seats, saying, 'You have a larger family, it's fine.' What an act of kindness. LIFE LESSON - Always be ready to treat others the way you would love to be treated yourself.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Money
The Bible has much to say about money, and most of it isn't that good. Probably the most popular is 1 Tim 6:10, saying that money is the root of all evil. Yet, we live in a culture that is wrapped around cash. What are the students we lead learning about money from us, both in what we preach and what we do? Here's some ideas for teaching students how to handle money: 1) Have regular offerings each week and encourage everyone to give what they can, 2) Each time the offering is given, mention that it is our Christian requirement to tithe 10% of our income, 3) Have a special offering once a month for guest speakers, Speed the Light, or a local mission project, 4) Organize a special event annually that they can participate in which raises funds for a special project in conjunction with your local church body, 5) Be frugal in your expenditures for the ministry so that you can show a balance with the desire for the latest technology and helping those in need, 6) Offer scholarships to students for payments to special events with the option of working specific tasks to help raise those funds, 7) Take a series once a year to teach about finances from specific angles like saving for the future, tithing, generous giving, and preparing for college, 8) Make sure you have leadership represented from all spheres of financial backing, both rich and poor, 9) Seek for 100% participation - that everyone would work together as a team and do their part, 10) Do a fun Secret Santa outing - go to a local mall or store, give them each a few bucks, draw names, go around and buy gifts for the name drawn, then come back to the church to distribute them to each other.

As leaders, we all want to encourage our followers to develop a healthy prayer life. We know that this is one of the pillars of a strong relationship with God. It is a way for us to communicate with God, and receive communication from Him as well. It can also give us a better 'big picture' mentality of the issues facing us in our world today. Recent research has also shown that prayer can actually reshape our brains. Though the paper defining this concept doesn't distinguish what kind of prayer, or prayer focused to God, as opposed to Allah or other supposed deity's, it shows that a tremendous amount of focus can impact our reality. In other words, the more we pray the more it 'works'. Find our more information on the article HERE. And also, would you share with us ideas on practices you've used to develop the prayer life of your groups and students...

This past weekend my family and I went out to eat at Crackle Barrel. My son loved the lemonade, and because it was free refills, he had 4 glasses with his meal. We warned him that it might be too much, but he didn't worry about it. After dinner, we went to downtown Omaha to walk among the trails and see the Christmas lights, but only a few minutes in he was saying that we needed to leave so he could go to the bathroom. Halfway home, we stopped by a gas station and he ran inside for relief. LIFE LESSON - Plan ahead and take it easy. Too much of a good thing can be too much.
