1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Creative Kids
As the new year approaches, many of us will be making resolutions for things that we'd like to change for ourselves and our families in 2016. We often consider areas we feel we are lacking in and need to improve. Why not consider advancing in other areas, like being more generous or creative? Many of us start off creative when we are children, but then begin to stifle it when we grow older. Rather than stifle it, we should encourage it and allow it grow as we age and become more capable of impact in our world. Here are some traits of creative kids that we can look for, and look to help thrive for God in 2016 (from David Pafford's book, RISE):

1. They value experiences
2. They have broad interests
3. They are attracted to complexity
4. They are not judgmental
5. They have high energy
6. They seek out autonomy
7. They express much initiative
8. They exude self-confidence

This past week was Christmas. We had family from Massachusette's visiting, but we didn't think we'd be able to see our own family from Grand Island as they were traveling instead. We got a call Christmas morning that because of weather they had changed their plans, so they came over and had lunch with us and it was great to see them and catch up. 1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Judging Cautions
Most of us are familiar with the Bible passage from Jesus' Sermon on the Mount encouraging us not to judge others. It's a very common Bible verse, but not such a simple command to live out. As Christians, we should reserve judgement for God and let Him lead us in our response to circumstances in our lives. This should be our goal in each and every situation. Here's some simple cautions about judging others, from Peter Haas in his book, Pharisectomy

1. If you judge based on format or style instead of fruitfulness, you'll miss God.
2. When you judge, you become isolated from the grace of God in other people.
3. You can't antagonize and influence at the same time.

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Fathers
My friends just brought a foster child into their home last week. It's been an incredible experience, just acclimating him to the family and teaching him certain rules and routines that were non existent in his life before. Because of the fact that he came from a home without a father, my friends assumed he would cling to woman in their relationship. But with the boys first experience with a strong man leading the home, he has completely clung to the dad - asking for him at all times, following him everywhere in the house, waking him up in the middle of the night, etc.. LIFE LESSON - God's design was for boys to have a dad to look up to and try to be like as a hero.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Millennials in Ministry
One of the trends that we've seen over the years is that younger people are not attending church as much after high school as they used to. These young people, mostly labeled as millennials, are often looked down upon as being incredible selfish and unreachable. But one of the greatest ways to impact this generation is with people who are in this generation. We need to embrace young emerging leaders and help them find ways to make a difference in the our churches today. Here's some common circumstances for a millennial that may feel the call of God on their lives, from Jolene Cassellius Erlacher's book, Millennials in Ministry

4 Prominent Atmospheres for the Call

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Planning Well
This past week, I finally had the opportunity to have surgery on a bad left knee. It had been painful since our summer camps, but to make sure that I would be available for other major events in NYM throughout the year, I held off the surgery date until this month, which is traditionally very slow for us due to the holidays. Surgery is always a cautious endeavor and several things can happen that can derail the recovery process. Just last night, as my left knee had been progressing nicely (range of motion, able to place some weight on it with the aid of crutches), I had a setback. My right knee (repaired 2 years ago) suddenly erupted in sharp pain. We'll talk with the doctors today and see what we can do but the assumption is that it may delay my recovery of my left knee longer than expected. In retrospect it was good to delay the surgery to a time when I would have plenty of time for unexpected delays. LIFE LESSON - Expect the unexpected and plan ahead.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Getting Through to this Generation
There are some in a network of ministers in NE that have been serving as pastors in churches for decades. They often remark to me how things have changed in working with young people. Most of the focus centers around the attitudes of the young people growing up in this culture of entitlement. The question often arrises, what's the best ways to reach them? Here's some answers from Tim Elmore in his book, iY Generation:

1. They want to belong before they believe.
2. They want an experience before an explanation.
3. They want a cause before they want a course.
4. They want a guide on the side before they want a sage on the side.
5. They want to play before they pay.
6. They want to use but not be used by others.
7. They want a transformation, not merely a touch.

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Good Goals
This past week I had the privilege of meeting with several children's workers in the Omaha area. We came together for a time of fellowship, training, and fun. One couple that came was new to the ministry over the past few months. After discussing their progress, they said that in reality, their main goal over the last few weeks was to get through a Sunday morning service without a report of a kid hitting another kid in the head. We all chuckled a little and told them that we knew were they were at. We were proud of them for sticking with it and excited to see where God will take them in the future.      Life is a journey. We make many choices along the way that impact the direction of our path. As Christians, we want to follow the route that God planned for us when He created us. This can be a challenging task; knowing the will of God in the many decisions facing us today. How can we be sure we are following God's Will? Here are some questions to ask yourself to help with this process, taken from Brian Dollar is his book, I Blew It:

1. Have I prayed for it?
2. What does my pastor think about it?
3. Does the idea resonate with my team?
4. Do I have the support of veterans?
5. Do I need Gods power to accomplish this idea?

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Never Give Up
This past weekend was full of football, as Thanksgiving weekend always is. I enjoy watching the games, but it was tough on Friday when the Huskers lost to the Hawkeyes and ended their season. Last night, my favorite NFL Team, the Broncos, were going up against an undefeated New England Patriots in primetime. Our star quarterback is still on the shelf so we started our backup against arguable the best quarterback in the league, Brady. Within the first few possessions, the Patriots had already scored two touchdowns and looked like they were going to roll. I considered turning the game off and focusing solely on putting up Christmas decorations, but instead I decided to keep watching. I'm so glad I did. My team slowly but surely caught up, and won in overtime. It was a huge victory, and one that I almost didn't even see. LIFE LESSON - Never Give Up, you never know what could happen.

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Kindness
This past weekend I ran out quickly in the morning to grab something from the store. I parked easy enough, made my way inside, found the item near the front, and then got in line at the checkout. There was an individual at the front, and then two ladies in front of me, both with full carts. The lady immediately in front of me left her cart to go and snatch a few extra items while she was waiting. She came back and noticed me behind her. She asked if I only had the one item, which I did. She said I could go in front of her. I looked ahead and saw the other lady looking at me and I wasn't sure if I should, when the lady in front of me exclaimed, 'Come on now, hurry up!' I moved ahead, found out the ladies were together and made my way to the front of line, with her staring at me the whole time, in anger. LIFE LESSON - Kindness isn't just an action; it starts with our attitude.

This next weekend is our Western Youth Convention in North Platte, NE. Several church groups will arrive on Friday and settle into to our hotel/convention center. We'll run through the services and late night activities, releasing the students with their leaders for the overnight stay and meals. All will finish up Saturday afternoon before the journey home. All of this is possible because of the adult chaperones and youth leaders that help oversee the event from the local church. We all look for people that can help us with these type of events. When looking for these leaders, what should we look for? Here are some signs of capable leaders from Brad Lomenick, in his book The Catalyst Leader:

1. Constantly push forward
2. Team players
3. Own their mistakes
4. Willing to take risks
5. Constant learners
6. Not entitled
7. Anticipators
8. Persistent
9. Trustworthy
10. Deliver

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Change that Lasts
Two weekends ago, we hosted our Eastern Fall Youth Convention for students across Nebraska at Flatland Church in Omaha. A group from Milford attended and God truly moved in their lives over the course of the weekend. When they went home and attended church on Sunday morning, the were fired up! The pastor had an altar call for prayer and several adults raised their hands. Without being prompted, the students responded by going to those with raised hands and praying for them. LIFE LESSON - The work of ministry is changing lives.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Speaking Tips
This past weekend we hosted our first youth convention this year. We have another one in Western NE in two weekends, Nov 20,21st. Around 500 students and leaders will gather together for fun, worship, and to hear from God. The speakers we bring in are tasked with hearing from God and delivering that message to us. This is something that several of us do on a regular basis in our local churches. Here's some good tips for connecting with your audience when preaching or teaching, from Doug Fields and Duffy Robbins in their book, Speaking to Teenagers:

Practical Communication Suggestions
1. Meet them on their terms for acceptance
2. Be relevant to your audience
3. Be specific on how it relates to their lives
4. Surprise them by exceeding their negative expectations
5. Help them discover it on their own

1). Blog Entry: Raise Your Voice
This past weekend was our Eastern Youth Convention in Nebraska. We hosted it at Flatland Church in Omaha. One of my favorite parts of convention is when we honor our Students of the Year. These are students, nominated by their youth pastors and selected by our Youth Committee, who have exemplified great faith in their lives, overcoming challenges and being a witness for God. We honored Adrianne from North Central, NE on Saturday afternoon. She was in a tough home situation, but didn't give up and kept believing that God could change her family. Not only did her mom eventually give her life to the Lord, but she was even there as one of their chaperone's, able to celebrate in the honoring of her daughter as well. LIFE LESSON - Raise Your Voice as a witness to others and God will use you to change lives.
