1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - OUTREACH
This past weekend my church hosted an outreach. It was Palm Sunday weekend, and we rented our local school football field and gymnasium for a carnival. We had free food, inflatables, and massive egg hunt with several gift card giveaways. We'd been promoting it for weeks with flyers and signs around town, praying for a good crowd. We were completely amazed as hundreds of guests entered the event and enjoyed the activities. We invited them all to come back to be with us for services on Easter Sunday, and we pray that several will attend. LIFE LESSON - Don't be afraid to reach out to your neighbors.

I have attended the National Youth Leaders Conference in Dallas Texas this week (NYLC15). I went to a session from Monty Hipp, longtime Youth Leader and Evangelist. He was speaking at helping students discover truth in such a skeptical culture. Here are some of the concepts he discussed:
     - There are 4 main groups that are changing our world today: Faith Communities, Governments, Corporations, and Givers
     - How are you equipping leaders to deal with the issues of the day?
     - Listen more than you speak and understand more than you seek to be understood
     - Remove ambiguity by asking them where they got their views on the subjects
     - Awareness matters so make sure to inform, instruct, and impart. Ask - is there a position on this I can agree with without compromising my ethics?
     - Find agreement by asking what's best for others and me on this subject.
     - Eliminate the word 'potential' when speaking to students about themselves.
     - Plan to take action - what action should I do today that I could wait until tomorrow?

This past weekend the official NCAA March Madness Tournament began for college basketball. 68 teams competed for the title of national champion. One of my previous camp speakers runs a bracket online that has almost 800 entries. I had my entire family enter the contest. My daughter Abby started off very slow, in the 200's. But after yesterdays games and the end of the first weekend, she finds herself in 27th place overall and 1st in our family. My wife started off 1st in our family and in 50th place overall, but now she finds herself somewhere lost in the 400's. LIFE LESSON - Be patient to see what will happen over time.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Offerings
For those of that work with young people, budgets can often be a challenge. Many times we are required to raise our own funds, a tough task working with young people often devoid of any money. And yet, this also helps us accomplish an important part of the discipleship of students: developing a generous heart to give. We must teach them the principle of tithing, as well as giving to support other worthy causes like missions (STL) , emergencies, special projects, etc. We can add an offering during services, maybe after announcements, or right before the message. Some groups choose to do an offering once a month, usually the first or last meetings monthly. Some groups choose a quarterly night where the focus is missions and they challenge every student to bring a specific amount, like $10 or $20. Others pick a month during the year and focus on missions and giving throughout the entire month. Finally, most groups pick a special event, usually in the summertime, to do a project or a task together that helps raise funds both for their own budget and to meet the needs of others as well. What practices do you have for helping students with this important Christian discipline?

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Purpose in Pain
When I was young I tore the ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) in both knees while playing football. It was a tough time for me, missing out on college scholarships and changing the trajectory of my life. Now, several years later I can see how God continued to lead me where I needed to go and brought to the place I am today. The torn ligaments were all a part of that journey. Earlier this weekend I was with one of my pastor friends and he mentioned that he had recently torn his ACL and asked for advice. I was able to help him out some, and remember my journey and thank God. LIFE LESSON - God can use the tough times in our lives to make us stronger and better.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Led by the Spirit
Yesterday, at our District Office Staff Meeting we had a robust discussion about what it means to be led by the Spirit. Ultimately, we all agreed that it starts with intimacy with God. Others mentioned that the closer we are to God, the closer our desires will align with His will. Another interesting antidote was that often God speaks to us when we didn't expect it, so we know that we didn't manufacture it on our own. My personal desire when I think God is directing me to do something is to test it through all of the different major ways I can hear God's Voice (the inner voice of the Holy Spirit, the Word, Family, Leaders, Accountable Friends, Circumstances, and the Supernatural). This is an important skill that must be practiced often and taught to our children and our Youth Group attendees. Be quick to allow for opportunities for people to hear God's voice and be led by His Spirit often in your leadership ventures.

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Invitations
This past weekend I had the privilege of visiting Crossroads Church in Council Bluffs, IA to see my brother-in-law preach. He was visiting for a leadership retreat and his final task was preaching in the Sunday morning service. The pastor did a few announcements and transitions, and told the story about his trip to Starbucks earlier in the week. He felt that God was telling him to invite the barista to church. He fought it, not wanting to make it awkward in their conversation, but he knew that God was directing him to do so, so he finally gave in and made the invitation. Sure enough, she responded well and she was sitting in church that morning as his guest. LIFE LESSON - Don't be afraid to invite people to church. Don't be afraid to do what God tells you to do.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Raising up Students
This past weekend was our annual (yet new) Student Summit, which involves Fine Arts for students in Nebraska. This is a chance for teenagers to showcase their ministry gifts in an atmosphere of ministry professionals offerings positive and constructive feedback. The last several years we had seen our overall numbers slightly decreasing, so we tried some new things to hopefully kickstart it to growth again. Much of the need is allegedly due to a culture in which more and more of our young people show up as spectators to youth ministry and church, rather than participants. This is a case that isn't contained to teenagers alone, but to all people in church both young and old. I find that ironic, considering that more and more of our churches are left without pastors and asking for help with people that can assist with worship needs, such as a song leader, guitar player, sound man, etc. For the sake of our future, I believe it should be a goal of all youth ministries that every young person is working with a mentor, teaching them how to minister in a particular skill important in the church. Imagine if your best worship team members spent an equal amount of time on stage as they do with a young person helping them grow in the same gift. Not only could this be helpful for future ministry, but also for installing a program of mentorship with young people in your community today.

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Watch your words
This past week, I had the privilege of traveling through Eastern sections of Nebraska with my Superintendent, meeting with pastors and discussing vision and ministry. In one particular section, a guest missionary couple was asking me about the area, because they plan to move there while itinerating. The asked which part of town would have the most crime so they could avoid that neighborhood. I mentioned that the entire area wasn't the crime-ridden, but I did specify an area that may be considered in that light. A lady sitting next by jumped in the conversation and asked me to repeat which area that was, in my opinion. Sure enough, that was her neighborhood. LIFE LESSON - Watch your words carefully.
