1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Sharing
This past weekend I had the privilege of being on the worship team for our church in Grand Island, playing acoustic guitar. I had switched the schedule around a bit to make sure I was on for this last Sunday. As I showed up in the parking lot, my buddy Randy was getting out of his car with his acoustic guitar in tow. I thought maybe I messed up the schedule, but Randy said it wasn't a problem and I was going to use his gorgeous Taylor guitar for Sunday. It was a Godsend, because we played two different songs that were led on the guitar, one of which had some of the quickest strumming I've done in a long time. LIFE LESSON - When we share the good things that we love with others, it's increasing a good thing.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Youth Ministry Tangible Goals
Recently I had a conversation with one of our Youth Pastors. He was seeing a tremendous amount of visitors at the beginning of the School Year. While that excited him, he wondered how many he should expect to plug in on a regular basis, how much should he plan for with the service schedule and room setup, how should he adjust his programming to fit the new people, etc. Here are some tangible numbers to setup as goals for Youth Ministries from Mark DeVries in his book Sustainable Youth Ministries

Youth Ministry Numbers
 - Budget should reflect $1,000 to $1,500 per student
 - One full time staff person for every 50 youth
 - One adult leader for every 5 students
 - The Youth Groups should be at least 10% of the worshipping congregation
 - There is a 20% ceiling on how much they can grow
(Exceptions - 12 or less students can have less financial needs, churches with one high school/jr. high in town can be much larger, some increases in these numbers can offset each other)

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Detours
I have been riding my bike everyday several miles, in training for our annual Missions Bike Ride which starts the week of Labor Day. Earlier last week, I was almost 10 miles into my route when I turned a corner and saw that the road had been blocked due to construction. They had a detour route planned and I reluctantly followed it. Though not much of a nuisance for those in cars, it took me out of the way a few miles and was very tiring. The next day I adjusted my route to bypass the detour and save a few miles on my legs. LIFE LESSON: Life will contain many detours. The key is to be flexible and adjust when necessary.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Teaching Methods
Youth and Kids Ministries can be so much fun. Working with young people gives us the chance to creatively communicate God's truths to students in an ever changing culture. This can be challenging, both from a standpoint of critical 'communication experts' already in the church, as well as from the suspicious feelings of many students in the world today. So how do you pick the write teaching method for your group? Here's some great questions to help you decide, from Duffy Robbins and Doug Fields in the book Speaking to Teenagers.

- If the room is dark, what does that communicate?
- If I use sarcasm, what does that communicate?
- If I have to be funny, how does that limit my topics?
- Can I be creative while also teaching the text?
- Do I use great illustrations from inappropriate origins?

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Things Break
This past week, our Camp Manager Brian went to the campgrounds to pick up a few supplies. While there I asked him to look a few pieces of important equipment that had been damaged and needed repair. It was a bit frustrating to have so many things go down at one time, but as we discussed it and looked back on our history, it was a normal occurrence. We remembered several seasons when we had to repair and fix major items all over the camp. The same day, I came home to a faucet in my kitchen that was falling apart and needed repair. This was after a recent repair on my washing machine, and my water softener, and so one, and so on. LIFE LESSON: Things get used and things get broken. Proper maintenance should be a common activity in our lives.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Principles for Interpreting Scripture
We all should read the Bible everyday. But we can't just read it and then move on, we've got to digest it and let it change us. Many people struggle understanding what the Bible is trying to say to us today. Here's some concepts for helping us analyze the Word when we read it, from Francis Chan in the book Multiply:

A. Consider the Context
B. Know the Difference between Interpretation and Application
C. Find the Plain Meaning
D. Take the Bible literally
E. Study the grammatical context
F. Study the historial context
G. Let go of our emotional baggage

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Helping Hands
We're about a month away from our annual Missions Bike Ride. I began training at the beginning of July, and my one of my first rides out, I got a flat tire. It happened to be when my wife was out of town so I didn't have a ride to pick me up. I walked home with my bike in tow. I remember walking 2 miles on a busy street, with several trucks passing me by, not one offering to help me out. It surprised me because we live in a city that is usually very friendly and helpful. I'd considered writing a life lesson about this incident before, but considered it too negative to post.
This past weekend, I returned from a long trip to National Fine Arts in Orlando, FL. I hopped back on my bike to get training again. About halfway through my route, a random truck passed me, stopping at a stop sign several feet ahead of us. I saw the driver hop out of his seat and step up on his bumper, pulling a drink out of a cooler in the back of his truck. As a rode by, he pulled out a water and offered it to me. It surprised me, and as I rode by I remembered walking home with my bike a month ago with my loss of hope in the kindness of people. LIFE LESSON - Don't be so busy that you can't stop and offer help to someone near you in need.

In Francis Chan's book Multiply, he brings up the issue of our motives for reading the Bible. Some read out of guilt and others out of duty, but should those be the main reasons we do what we do? He suggests different motives that should guide us to read God's guide for our lives, the Word of God:

1. It's how God describes Himself to us
2. We discover things about ourselves and the world we live in
3. It enables us to live Godly lives
4. To facilitate a relationship with God
5. To Exalt Jesus
6. To Prepare us for our Purpose

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Keep Moving
Two years ago I had surgery on my right knee. It wasn't the first time. I had severly bowlegged legs when I was a child and had to wear braces to correct them. Then, I had ACL surgeries on both knees in high school. This recent surgery was to repair torn cartilage, and after the surgery the doctor informed me that I had arthritis in both knees because of my early knee problems. He said the best course of action was to keep my knees in motion, especially biking or swimming, because that will keep them limber and pain free. This past June during our camp season, my knees hurt worse than I could remember. I was limping and hobbling around the camp, popping pain pills and wearing knee braces everywhere. After camps, I remember what the doctor said and got my bike out. I had been biking almost every day from then until now. The last 3 days with my family, we were walking everywhere and though my knees where both sore, they made it much better than they had at camp. The difference? - I kept my knees in motion. LIFE LESSON - Staying active in our faith can keep us from becoming rigid and experience pain.
