1). Blog Entry: Sharing Youth Ministry
This past week I had the opportunity to visit a youth ministry in the panhandle of Nebraska. Two churches were working together and hosting the ministry at a downtown location. One church, about 20 miles away, had leaders drive a van or two full of their students, bringing them there and back. It provided the group with a larger crowd of students, raising the level of energy and excitement in the room. It also helped because the church outside of town may not have had the leadership they needed to run a weekly youth service on their own. Several of our churches could partner together in this way and help each other out if they were open to it. The churches would agree to a common creed, location, and set of rules. Leaders from each church would help with their own students, as well as the provide leadership for the entire group and work as a team. Students that bring friends would encourage them to plug in with the church they attend, and the agreement would exist between the leaders not to recruit students away from the other church's weekend experience. Finally, the leaders need to work through a discipleship plan that encourages activity throughout the week back in their local communities. Often we can be stronger when we work together!

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Initiative
I had the privilege of speaking at a church yesterday in north central NE. The pastor had an oriental potluck planned for after church, and to help develop the theme they had a translation contest. They put a phrase in Chinese on the screens and challenged their people to guess what it said, with the winner receiving some M&M's. They then proceeded to try to play it on the speakers in Chinese so people could hear what it sounded like, and guess. Unfortunately, the wrong version played and we heard the words in English, 'Thank you for coming.' We all chuckled a little, when a young boy who had been following the pastor around all day trying to guess what it said, shouted out 'That what I was going to say!' LIFE LESSON - Make the most of every opportunity!

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Speaking to Teenagers
Tonight I have the privilege of speaking to a group of teenagers in Chadron. I can't wait to connect with them and their leaders, to cheer them on as they pursue Christ. Speaking to teenagers can seem like a challenge because of our unique culture, but it doesn't have to be. We need to do our best to value the short time we have to invest in their future. Here's some tips for our National Youth Strategist Scotty Gibbons, on speaking to teenagers, from his book The Big 10:

1. Prepare an annual speaking calendar
2. Make sermon planning a team effort with your core leaders
3. Think about your audience as you write.
4. Focus on one main point.
5. Lead students to action

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Ask a Friend
Yesterday was our church's 30th anniversary. We invited a few former pastors to be with us and we heard from several people about the history of our church. One dear lady got up to give us memories. She pointed out several adults in the church that had been a part of her children's Sunday School class. It all pointed back to the first time when she was invited to come to church and eventually gave her heart to God. She thanked that couple that invited her even though they had long since moved away. They didn't know that when they asked their friend to come she would eventually be standing on the platform and testifying to God's great deeds over the last several decades in the church. They were simply being obedient to God and reaching out. LIFE LESSON - Don't be afraid to ask your friends to come to church. It could dramatically change their lives.

1). Blog Entry: Programs?
I recently was in a discussion about involvement in district programs. It was a divided crowd; some felt they were very important, others - not so much. Programs in and of themselves are not divine; the real power of a program is in what it helps you accomplish as part of your discipleship plan. Almost all of us use programs to help move our people along in their faith, whether district led or created in the local church. So if helping kids memorize the Word of God is important to you, and you don't currently accomplish that in your strategy, consider Bible Quiz! If helping teens develop their ministry gifts for future ministry roles is important to you, and you don't currently cater to that in your process, consider Fine Arts within our Student Summit.
In addition, district programs are often one of the greatest ways to build relationships with other AG leaders and ministries. Sometimes, involvement in the program may not benefit your individual ministry as much as your presence will help benefit those in our network. And we want our young people to be committed to the Assemblies of God, so when they leave our churches they find others to plug into near their college or workplace. Often they don't hear much about our fellowship in their local process, so district programs help them discover the network at large, available for them after High School. And several of our volunteer leaders will eventually lead our ministries and churches across NE, and we want them to be committed to our Fellowship as well.

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Integrity
This past week in the evening one night, I heard a knock at my door. I opened it and a young boy scout stood there with some forms in his hand. He proceeded to tell me that he was selling popcorn to raise funds to send him to camp. Now, we've got plenty of popcorn, and it cost about half of what he was selling his for. But how could the camp director of NE not support a young child wanting to go to camp? I bought some white cheddar popcorn and was happy to do so. 1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - The iY Generation
This generation is largely regarded to one of the most self-absorbed one in the modern era. They have been catered to in the home and the school more than ever, and they have quickly become the most heavily marketed target in society. Regardless, God still loves them and we are called to reach out to them. Here is a list of several 'I' statements from this generation, from Tim Keller in his book, iY Generation:

I’m really tired
I’m distracted
I’m obese
I’m on my fifth career and ninth job in a decade.
I’m overwhelmed, but I’m dealing with it.
I’m impatient. I make short-term commitments.
I’m finishing a marriage contract of three years.
I’m reinventing myself constantly.
I have no innocence.
I’m seeing a therapist.
I love and hate my parents.
I’m bored.
I’m spending money out of control - a quarter of a million each month.
I’m depressed.
I’m self-absorbed.
I spend much of my home time online.
I’m living in a greener world.
I’m passionately following the reunion tour of Beyonce’ and Lady Gaga.
I’m stressed. I have little time to rescue my soul.
I pursue instant pleasure and entertainment and will spend to get it.
I’m medicated.
I’m living in a virtual world. (I plan to try virtual marriage.)
I’ve learned to do things faster. My pace of life is accelerated.
I experiment with preferences in gender and religion.
I still want to change my world, but I’m cynical about the possibilities.
I’m a leader in society now, but I’m ill-prepared.

This past weekend I had the privilege of serving at our campgrounds during a church retreat. There was about 70 people there for both Friday and Saturday night, so I came out to the camp to help with the meals, go-carts, and cleanup afterward. At the go-carts, we knew that we would have at least 4 of them running, but we found that one had a messed up starter chain and one had a flat tire. I'm not very mechanical so unfortunately I figured that we wouldn't be able to run those other go-carts. Suddenly a young couple showed up who had been assisting our cook in the kitchen. They just wanted to go for a ride or two, but when they saw my dilemma, the husband immediately set to work. He fixed the tire, and then put a new starter chain on the other one as well. All 4 ran great and served our group well. LIFE LESSON - Be a helpful person wherever you go.
