Recently I had a new Youth Leader ask for any tips I had as he was beginning to kick start a dormant Youth Ministry this next year. I had several thoughts and links I sent him, but it made me think about what the main basics of Youth Ministry are. Several people have several different views on this, but here's a list from Tim Walk in his book, The Youth Pastor's Manifesto:

Four 'P's' of Youth Ministry
1. Pastor
2. People
3. Programs
4. Presentations

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Invest in Someone
This past week I was at a meeting with the leaders of the NE District of the Assemblies of God. We were talking about how important it is to help pastors develop a strategy of discipleship for their churches. Terry Brown, our Secretary/Treasurer and my former pastor from Grand Island, mentioned how important it was for the saints of the church to find someone to pour into. He mentioned that when he was a young boy, a man named Harvey in his church poured into him, always encouraging him to grow in his faith. He even helped him read the Bible Story on Christmas Eve to the entire church. This great leader in our district owed much of his journey of faith to a wonderful faithful saint named Harvey from when he was a kid. LIFE LESSON - The investments you make in others always reap a significant return.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Studying the Word
I just finished a great breakfast meeting with a local youth pastor friend. During our discussion we talked about different ways in which we study God's Word. It was exciting because it's such an important part of our lives. We need to help lead those we work with to study the Scriptures and learn to love it as well. Here's a few ideas on helping students read the Word with good 'specs' (from our Eastern Convention Speaker in 2017, Eric Samuel Timm, in his book Static Jedi):

Read God's word with SPECs
Sins to confess and repent
Promises to claim
Examples to follow or not follow
Commands to obey

But during the meal, we kept having all kinds of random ideas on how they could improve their service and we gave them to Eric. He kept saying, 'I just work here' but we couldn't stop sending him suggestions as if he owned the place. 1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Writing
Recently, while talking to one of my Youth Pastor friends, I asked him what he had done while he was on vacation. He mentioned that among other things, he had spent some good time writing. I was reminded of how I used to write a bit more than I do now, working on a couple books, plays, and even some Bible Commentary. At the same time, several DYD's were remarking in our FB group that during this, our offseason, they were writing much as well. I found all of these interesting while I am sending out information about our upcoming Fine Arts with our Student Summit, and one of the main categories of entries is Writing. Students can participate in poetry, first person essays, book chapters, and more. Just as we now enjoy many wonderful Christian books from authors around the nation, many of those future writers are sitting in our groups and enjoying our Youth Ministry. We need to help them find and pursue that gift in their lives. How can we do that? Here are a few ideas...

- Be involved in Fine Arts at the Student Summit and challenge your students to write a piece
- Encourage them to use their writing assignments at school to talk about their faith and share testimonies
- Challenge your students to keep a prayer/devotion journal and record their own notes and thoughts from your messages and discussions.
- Keep a selection of journals available at the altar that students can write in during worship and altar times.
- Make a goal to have a writing piece read to the group once a month, whether a special presentation or an illustration relating to a message.
- A few times a year, ask your students and leaders to read through a book together with you, and plan time for discussion and application.

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Say it Again
When something is really good, it needs to be stated again! My pastor was preaching yesterday, and he made this general statement, 'When we receive Christ, we don't become sinless, but with Christ we will sin less.' Several people agreed with him and made it known, so he said it again. Then, one of our board members shouted out, 'say it again.' Without missing a beat, our pastor answered, 'I did!'

1). Blog Entry: Leader Corner - Generations
Most of us are probably involved in ministry to students, whether teens or kids. But even ministry to students needs to consider how to minister appropriately across the generations, when considering the wide ranges of ages in our groups as well as working with parents and families in the church. One of the more challenging aspects of pastoring is leading a church full of several generations, and helping them all move forward in Christ together. Here's a snapshot of the many generations that should be alive in every church, according to Jolene Cassellius Erlacher in her book, Millenials in Ministry:

5 Generations in the church today
Silents - 20s-40s - hard working and loyal
Boomers - 40s-60s - optimistic and confident
Xers - 60s-70s - independent and realistic
Millennials - 80s-90s - protected and driven
Z's - 2000 and up - documented and pessimistic

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Anchors
My wife and I recently traveled a bit for a conference with other DYD's from around the nation to discuss camps and conventions. When we arrived on the ground, we were hungry so we set out to find a place to grab some quick food. Sure, we saw plenty of local options, but we came up on a Burger King and decided to stop there. As we were there, we remembered many other trips where we did the same thing. Later on that evening, before heading back to our hotel, we stopped at a Walmart to pick up some snacks for the room and breakfast items for the morning. Once again, we remembered doing that on several other similar trips in our past. Traveling across our country, just about anywhere we go, we could count on finding a Walmart and/or a Burger King to meet our needs. LIFE LESSON - God gave us His Word to be an anchor in our lives so that no matter where we go, we can cling to His promises to help us there in any situation.

These past few weekends were amazing, filled with ministry. We had our Eastern Youth Convention, followed by a statewide Bible Quiz meet, and then finishing with our Western Youth Convention. So many details and plans were difficult to maintain on my own, but with the help of my many volunteers and teammates, it was a cinch! We can accomplish more and go farther when we work with a team. Here's some great reasons to work within teams by Brian Dollar in his book, I Blew It

This past weekend was our Western Youth Convention in North Platte. I was a bit concerned going into it because a strong winter storm was forecast to move in late Thursday night into Friday morning. Sure enough, as we were setting up for the production, the snow began. We prayed and believed that God would do what was right in regard to the weather. Sure enough, as we headed out early in the morning to a radio interview, we saw a good amount of snow but it was already beginning to melt. By mid day, the roads were clear and it was chilly but beautiful outside. Only a few groups weren't able to make it and we had a wonderful convention yet again. LIFE LESSON - Don't worry about the weather, because God is always in control.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Training Kids in Ministry
One of the privileges many of us have in our churches is the responsibility to minister to our young people and our kids. This was considered a joy of Jesus' ministry and a great honor to him and his disciples. We should honor it as well. Because not only is impacting a young person for several years of their lives, but it is also raising up the next generation of church leaders and world changers. We don't have to wait until they are older to help them learn how to make an impact for God today. Here's a few tips from Dick Gruber in his book, Cultivating a Cutting-Edge Children's Church:

Children STAND in ministry
Show them trust
Train them for a life of service
Allow them to discover their gifts
Nurture godly attitudes
Demonstrate reliance on God

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Into all the World
While at a STL Summit a few months ago, I heard a story about how we still need to go into all the world with the Gospel. Our National Youth Leader told of how he traveled to South America as part of a Missions Trip when he was a new youth pastor. He was helping to carry Bibles up a mountain and literally on the side of a volcano to a village that had never received copies of the Word before. It was a long hike and he was very thirsty and in need of a break. When they reached the top, he saw a little homemade stand on the side of the road with a child selling bottles of Coke. Though the Gospel had never made it there, Coke had. LIFE LESSON - We need to be more aggressive about spreading the Word wherever we can and wherever we go.

When speaking to teenagers, it may seem like a difficult task. They may not like traditional styles of communication, without visuals and humor. But we don't have to despair, students are able to respond well when we allow God to guide us in our preparation and presentation. Here are some tips for connecting with your audience, from Doug Fields and Duffy Robbins in their book, Speaking to Teenagers:

Practical Communication Suggestions
1. Meet them on their terms for acceptance
2. Be relevant to your audience
3. Be specific on how it relates to their lives
4. Surprise them by exceeding their negative expectations

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Tithing
Yesterday, we heard a testimony from a couple in our church. They had been going through a difficult financial period; they had several large medical bills and unfortunately there insurance over doubled in price so they could no longer afford it They weren't sure how they would pay off their needs, but they also were wanting to begin the discipline of tithing ten percent of all they owned back to God as a Christian. They decided to step out in faith and give the tithe as the Bible commands, and later in the week they got a surprise check in the mail that wiped out one of their big medical expenses and helping them get back on their feet. LIFE LESSON - Obey God even if it's difficult, and God will take care of us.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Campus Clubs
One of the ministries that students can take advantage of at their school is to start a Campus Club. These Bible Clubs have been legalized throughout the nation, but there are certain steps that students should take to ensure the club is legitimate. Each school is slightly different about what they require, but here are a few basic steps from Kyle Embry, North Texas Youth Alive Missionary, in his book 'Hidden in Plain Sight'

Recognize the Call of God to do it
Connect with your youth pastor
Find a teacher to sponsor you and allow you to use their classroom before or after school
Meet with the Principal to seek permission

If you have any trouble or questions, feel free to contact us for further help!

1). Blog Entry: All In
This past week I had the privilege of attending our two regional Assembly of God Bible Colleges, Trinity in North Dakota, and North Central in Minneapolis. Trinity was dedicated a new Prayer Chapel with national leaders and board members on hand to celebrate with us. During the Chapel service, an older farming couple came to the mic to tell their story. The Vice President had come to their home to present the plans for the Prayer Chapel and asked them to help give toward the $500,000 project. The couple looked at each other and the lady said that they would give $2 million dollars. They gave 4 times the amount required and helped the school develop a beautiful Prayer Chapel for many generations to come. LIFE LESSON - Don't be afraid to give people a chance to give. And don't be afraid to give everything to God.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Appealing to the Masses
One of the trends we've seen in ministry over the last couple of decades is the change of styles within our services to accommodate the preferences of the millennial culture. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, as we are doing all we can to reach out to people to draw them in to be changed by the Gospel. But it's easy for us to focus so much on making them happy that we don't allow God to use us to challenge them to change. It's a constant challenge that we must be balanced with in our ministry, and we probably need the help of someone close to us to help us know we where are at in this endeavor from time to time. Mark Batterson describes this ironic assignment in his book, 'Circle Maker', the roles of a leader...

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Volunteers
This past weekend we had about 15 men that came to our campgrounds. They volunteered several hours of labor, helping us tear off the old siding from our Activities Center and beginning the process of installing new siding. We finished far more than we thought we would, and even began a new project within the building that we didn't think we'd get to for a long time. The guys enjoyed their time with us, completing a task, offering free assistance, and having fun with each other. We sat around the fire at night with a small devotion and some worship to cap off the first day as well. LIFE LESSON - Consider volunteering somewhere, it does a ton of good!
