1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Staying in Church
One of the major issues facing the church today is helping our young people transition from involvement in the Youth Ministry to active participants as Young Adults in church. The post graduation movement to jobs and colleges adds to the pressure, but statistics show that not many seem to make the move. Here's some factors on helping graduates plug into the life of the church, from George Sawyer in his book, The Resurrection of Authentic Manhood

1. Help with guiding them through life changing decisions
2. Parent were still married and both attended church together
3. The pastor's sermons are relevant to their lives

This past weekend, my pastor gave a nice compliment to our worship team. He recognized John, who was in the back playing percussion. Last Easter, our church held a large outreach at our local high school; it was a carnival with games, food, and an egg hunt on the football field. John and his family attended the carnival and began visiting our church soon after. Now they are members and he's a member of the worship team: LIFE LESSON - Don't be afraid to invest in outreaches, they can truly change lives!

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Different Levels of Understanding the Scriptures
One of the pillars of a strong Christian devotional life is daily Bible reading. It's important for believers of all ages to learn how to go to the Bible on our own and receive a Word from God. This can be challenging because sometimes the Bible is difficult to understand. Here are the different levels of Biblical understanding as fleshed out in our lives, according to Wayne Cordeiro in his book, The Divine Mentor:

When is just in your head - information
Just it moves to your heart - inspiration
When it bleeds out in your life and actions - incarnation

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Fresh Perspective
A few weeks ago, my local church pastor had a week of vacation. His family was traveling into Grand Island from across the nation for a few days, so it was a vacation at home. Incidentally, he had the Sunday off so he and his wife decided to go to another Assembly of God church in a city nearby just to check it out. It wound up being a great experience because so many aspects of the service became learning points for him, from the greeters at the front door, to the friendliness of the congregants, to the parking lot dynamics, etc. He's returned to a church with a desire to enhance various parts of our own ministry to make it more excellent. LIFE LESSON - Sometimes, we need to get out from our normal routine and see how someone else goes about doing it to get a fresh perspective on what we could change and do better.

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Faithfulness
Yesterday in church, my pastor took a copy of our paid off mortgage papers and with the help of the staff and the board burned them up. When Kim and first were appointed as Youth Directors for NE, we moved to Grand Island in 2005. Northridge Church became our home church and our first Sunday was incidentally the first Sunday in our new building at the time on the north side of GI. It was a beautiful facility, but a huge challenge financially for a small but growing body of believers. After several family transitions, storms, and changes in pastoral staff, with the faithful giving of members and friends far and wide, we accomplished paying off the building in just over 10 years. LIFE LESSON - Faithfulness will accomplish much in our lives over time.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - A Static Jedi
A great book that I read a couple of years ago was entitled, Static Jedi. The author was Eric Samuel Timm, a evangelist/Jesus Painter that travels much across the Midwest. Our own Pastor Bruce had him in for services in Lincoln and he is the one that gave me the book. It is a great read about staying close to Jesus and avoiding the distractions that can hinder our relationship with Him in our culture today. Here's 5 keys of a static jedi, from his book, Static Jedi:

1. Rise Early
2. Withdraw to draw toward God.
3. Knowing God's word
4. A Fasting Life
5. Choose to create disciples then do so.

1). Life Lessons - Kindness
About a month ago, I was pulling into the parking lot of my local YMCA gym. A truck was coming in at the same time and heading the same direction as me. At the last minute, he pulled into the parking spot that I was driving into myself, so I had to veer away to miss colliding. He never said anything to me once we got in the gym, and just acted like it was no big deal, though it frustrated me.
This weekend, I went to the gym to recuperate my surgically repaired knee, and sure enough I saw the man already there, running on a treadmill. I didn't think anything of it, and went to my bike. Later I saw him walking around, looking for something. A worker came and joined in. I overhead them saying that he had lost his truck keys. Though looking, we weren't able to recover them and he wound up waiting a long time for a ride from home. LIFE LESSON - Be nice to others. You never know when the situations may change and you may hope the kindness is reciprocated in a time of need.
