1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Generosity
This past weekend I had the chance to visit Milford Assembly of God church with our host ministry group from the Student Summit, James River Leadership Campus. After church, we went to a local eatery, the Pizza Kitchen, a full buffet restaurant downtown. We loved it, and afterward as we were preparing to leave I saw most everyone walking away with specialty ice cream. I knew it wasn't included in the meal so I thanked the pastor, but he mentioned that the restaurant owner gave it to the team on the house. I thanked him for his generosity and he simply said, 'thanks for stopping by, come again.' I can tell you, when I'm near the area, I certainly will! LIFE LESSON - Generosity goes a long a way!

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - How to respond to negative information
As leaders, many of us may experience times when people bring us bad news. Whether it's factual material, comments passed on from one person to another, damaging gossip, or a host of other forms - this information is not very easy to handle. What should we do to respond appropriately? Here's some tips from Jeanne Mayo in her book, Thriving Youth Groups:

1. Go directly to the people involved and talk with them about it
2. Keep your mouths closed and pray, don't spread rumors or gossip
3. Take confidentially it to a trusted leader for advice and help

1). Life Lessons - Respect
This past weekend I went out of town with my family to celebrate my daughter's Bday. One morning I was up early at the hotel and I was drinking some coffee and doing a devotion down in the breakfast area. The people began showing up and one particular gentleman with gray hair sat down on the comfortable sofas in front of the television for the room. He began to try to switch the channels but couldn't work it. He called in a hotel employee who also was unable to figure out the remote. An instant later, two teens were walking by and the man spoke to them, 'Hey, you look like you're 14 or 15, figure this out,' and he handed them the remote. They didn't panic or look offended but tried their best without figuring it out themselves. Once they walked away, he decided to just watch what was on the channel and stop making a scene. I was shocked with his courtesy in working with the hotel employee but his lack of respect when dealing with the two teens. LIFE LESSON - Just because we get old doesn't mean we have to get obnoxious. People are worthy of respect, regardless of what circumstance and age we find them in.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Likability
As Christians, God has called us to reach out to the lost people around us and help bring them a saving knowledge of Jesus. Being a great witness should be a common goal of us all. But often the stereotypes we see our media present of a modern day Christian is a stuck up, holier than thou, mean-spirited person. This is ironic because Jesus himself had a great reputation among the 'sinners' in the culture of His day. Why was it so different for Him? This topic is mentioned in Justin Lathrop's article in the most recent copy of Influence magazine, entitled The Likeable Leader. A few tips he made were:

- Our convictions don't have to be needlessly divisive
- When popularity is our motive, we're missing the big picture
- We can't bully someone into changing
- People want to be treated with love and respect
- Jesus loved them, and His love changed them
- Live like Christ, do what He did and love people the way He did

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Share Generosity
A few weeks ago, my wife and I heard an announcement at our church that they are looking for people who would sign up to volunteer to provide meals to families that were going through difficult circumstances in life. She signed up and we got the call for a friend in need this weekend. She prepared the meal on Saturday, and we took it over to their house right before we headed out for our own Valentine's Date. Though the movie and our time together was precious as always, one of my favorite moments was delivering the meal to our friends in need. It reminded me of when we had our first child, and a few ladies in our church back in Bellevue brought over some meals for a few days to help us out. It was a tremendous blessing then, and one that I hope we can duplicate to our neighbors today. Who knows, maybe someday they'll get the chance to repeat the favor for someone else just like we are.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Empowered Life
Our District Superintendent for Nebraska is traveling around the state this month meeting with leaders and discussing their dreams. All of us have dreams of what we'd like to do someday, what we'd like to become. Some have seen their dreams become a reality, while others are still wishing for the miraculous to take place in their lives. What steps can we take to be empowered to pursue our dreams? Here's three steps encouraged by Les Parrott in his book, Three Seconds:

1. Say what you know - instead of what you don't
2. Cultivate care - and really mean it.
3. Brandish optimism like a weapon

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Sacrifice
This past week I had the chance to attend a national DYD conference in Missouri. One my associates from the South is leaving his position to become a missionary to a country that is closed to the Gospel. He's risking everything for the call. In conversation with other DYD's about his dedication, we were speaking about how special STL is in providing missionaries with the tools they need to get the job done. I heard of a Lead Pastor also from the South who wanted to step up his church's STL giving, so he decided to dedicate the entire first offering of every month to STL. What is amazing about this is that he is part time at the church and drives a truck 6 hours a day, 5 days a week to help supplement his own income. The church gave over $40,000 to STL, monies which could have been used by him to personally stop his own outside employment. Missionaries sacrifice so much to preach the Gospel. Such great selflessness requires great sacrifice on our part to equip them appropriately.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - DeBriefs
After our services and events, it's wise to sit down as a time and debrief. This is the process of talking openly about the activities from our individual perspectives, sharing notes and thoughts openly without threat of repercussion. It's important to trust other and be completely honest in order to keep our services and events as effective as possible. Here's 3 important qualities of a good DeBriefing meeting, from Tim Walk, in his book The Youth Pastor's Manifesto,

1. Discussion Topics: KEEP, CHANGE, KILL. Every team member must provide an answer in all 3 categories.
2. Explain the why, Define the what, Inspect the How

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Relationships
This past week was a week full of moments that symbolized the value of relationships. I had a meeting with a friend and we were able to reconnect after letting our friendship fade into the background over the last few years. I interacted with others and committed to improve our communication as move forward. We held a meeting of Youth Ministers in someone's home, and it was so much more fun and relational in that atmosphere, with people staying and chatting with others late into the night. And this past weekend was our annual church business meeting (I know - doesn't sound too fun), but it was preceded by a great Sunday service where I was surprised by a visit from an old friend, and a potluck with the whole church staying after to enjoy some food and fellowship. LIFE LESSON - We can live life without others, but it won't be as fulfilling or fun. Relationships make things just a little bit better in our daily routine.
