1). Blog Entry: First Steps for New Believers
With our NE District Camps approaching, I'm excited to see what God has in store for the students who will be coming to our camp next month. Often we see hundreds make commitments to Christ, but as leaders we know that it can't stop there. They must take it home and act it out in their daily lives. This usually can only happen as they get plugged into a local church that is helping them along their journey. Here are several great first steps for new Christians, as outlined by Peter Scazzero in his book Emotionally Healthy Spirituality:

1. Attending church regularly
2. Daily devotions
3. Small group discipleship
4. Giving tithes and offerings
5. Changing lifestyle choices
6. Using spiritual gifts
7. Sharing Christ with others
8. Furthering growth (retreats, books, etc)

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Be Flexible
This past weekend I was on worship team at my church, scheduled to play acoustic. When I arrived at church, I saw that two other acoustic guitar players were already there, so I figured I would just bow out and let them play. But our Worship Leader mentioned he hadn't heard from our drummer yet and maybe I could fill in at that position. I started on the first song, and then when transitioning in practice to the 2nd, our drummer showed up. He happens to also play the Bass Guitar so our bass guitarist said he was scheduled the whole month of June and would love another Sunday off, so he left the stage and our scheduled drummer played the Bass LIFE LESSON - Be flexible! Sometimes our plans fall apart but that doesn't mean our ministry has to fall apart too.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Visitor Followup
As Schools are finishing and summer is beginning, many of our youth and children's ministries in NE take a break for the summer. Usually we will still meet a few times in a more relaxed environment, a few fun outings, maybe even an outreach or two. Summer is a great time to see the friends of your attendees make an appearance and check things out. So how can we best reach out to them and encourage them to plug into our groups on a regular basis? Here's some thoughts on great followup from Scotty Gibbons in his book, The Big 10:

1. Focus on first impressions
2. Connect students to students
3. Reach out to the family
4. Track student involvement and activity
5. Discover why students stop coming
6. Find a place for them to start serving immediately

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Try Again
So my son Ryan works at Best Buy in Grand Island. Yesterday he had to go in early and work a full shift, handling phone calls. Knowing this, I planned to call him and trick him. I was on hold because there was a call in front of me. Once it went off hold, I heard him answer, 'Hello Dad'. It surprised me, but he said normally he doesn't know who calls but since I was on hold he could see my number and he recognized it. After we hung up I text'd my wife, who is traveling with her sister, to call him. She had our nephew Tytus do it, and when Ryan answered, it was in the usual company manner. Tytus proceeded to say that he had bought a refrigerator recently and needed help because it was running and he needed to catch it. It took Ryan a little bit, but he finally figured out that it was another family crank call. LIFE LESSON - If at first you don't succeed, don't be afraid to try again.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Spiritual Formation
Yesterday in our District Office Staff meeting we were discussing a passage from Ecclesiastes and the thought came up, what does a good picture of discipleship look like? This can be a hard question to answer but it's such an important one because it is the goal of all of our churches and their functions. Here's a concept of proper spiritual formation from Aubrey Malphurs in his book, Advanced Strategic Planning:

Thirteen Steps of spiritual formation for churches
1. Acknowledge personal sinfulness
2. Confess your sins
3. Forgive others
4. Pray for the church
5. Be positive
6. Pursue reconciliation
7. Agreed to church discipline
8. Obey church leadership
9. Listen to others
10. Speak the truth
11. Pursue holiness
12. Be a servant
13. Remember who's church it is

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Stay Alert
Recently we made an adjustment with our swimming pool at our campgrounds which I oversee in Lexington, NE. Several local groups of older adults rent out the pool 3-5 times a week, using it for therapy and exercise. They love it but they've always asked for it to be kept very warm to help with the circulation in their bodies. We had preferred to keep it a bit lower, to keep our utility costs low. We met in the middle and agreed to a goal of being in the mid 80's, but during our last two year of transition in leadership, this goal was forgotten. We did a recent inventory and discovered that the temperature in the pool was actually at 94! I instructed our steward to gradually bring it back down and then I would call the ladies and let them know about the reduction When I spoke to one of the ladies a few days later, she mentioned that the temperature had already gone down to 88 and nobody had noticed and said anything about it. LIFE LESSON - If we don't watch, important things in our lives can begin to fade and we won't even notice.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - The Rules of Trust
Being a leader, it's important that the people following you trust you. If they don't, your journey as a leader won't last very long. They don't just buy into the vision, they buy into you. So how do we earn their trust in a real, genuine way? Here's a few rules from Jon Gordon in his book, Soup

1. People follow the leader first and the vision second
2. Trust is the force that connects people to the leader and their vision
3. Optimism causes them to believe in you, vision inspired them to follow you
4. Trust generates commitment, commitment fosters teamwork, teamwork delivers results

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Be Observant
A few Sunday's ago, our pastor was speaking about forgiving others when they are mean to you. He tried to make an illustrative point by saying, 'Let's say that Joey treats you unfairly.' He suddenly stopped and asked if anyone was named Joey in the sanctuary. Of course, the row behind me had a young man who raised his hand with a big smile on his face. The pastor went on to explain that he obviously didn't have this young man in mind and quickly changed his name to a different one.
