1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Expectancy and Receptivity
This week I'm speaking at another camp in Montana and it's a blast. Montana is beautiful, and the people here are wonderful as well. I'm enjoying seeing Jr. Teens go deeper with God and make commitments to Him. It reminds me of how effective events can be in changing our students lives. But their level of expectation can greatly impact how receptive they are to the good things God has in store. I've spoken to many who had been looking forward to this camp for months on end. The article linked above is from my friend, the DYD of North Carolina, Doug Witherup, and will help us channel students expectations in a way that will maximize the effectiveness of our special events.

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Good Business!
This weekend was a great weekend of ministry. We had our NE AIM CHICAGO team take off for their week of ministry with the Chicago Dream Center. They will be active in Children's Ministry, as well as working at one of 6 different mission programs while on the trip. Also, our NE AIM COSTA RICA team took off for their week of ministry in the Caribbean. They will be active in School Assemblies and other various missions while overseas. Our campgrounds in Lexington is gearing up for a week of ministry with one of our churches bringing their students for a weeklong camp. I had the great opportunity to speak and lead worship at River of Life Church in St. Paul yesterday to help my buddy Mike Fowler, who is leading the Chicago team. That was the precursor to my trip to Montana to speak at a Jr. Teen Camp before being involved with National Fine Arts. And on top of all that - my daughter finished up her first week of High School (technically) at a Show Choir camp, culminating in the premiere night of their show for the year last night. LIFE LESSON - Being busy is not always a bad thing, it can show a life fully lived for Christ!

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - The Value of an Event
Summertime is a wonderful time for Youth Ministries. Some youth ministries take the summer off, and some continue meeting weekly as they do during the school year, but many adjust their routines and have special outings, outreaches, trips, and events to take advantage of the free summer schedule. These types of activities are often very fun and full of impacting spiritual moments, but may seem to lack any systematic discipleship connections. They can be looked down upon at times because of the tremendous amount of work involved and the many students who elevate their spiritual focus during the event only to see it decline again afterward. So, what is the true value of an event for us in Youth Ministry. New York District Youth Director David Hertwick explores this topic in the link above!

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Time
Yesterday as I was coming back from McCook to the camp, I got a FB message from an unknown person. I recognized his last name but still didn't know who it was. They asked if I was ever in Master's Commission. I responded that I had been with Bellevue Master's Commission back in the 90's. He wrote back that he was amazed because he noticed I was a friend of his daughter's on Facebook, she having friended me after coming to camps and conventions. Years ago, he was a pastors kid in Grand Island at a Church of God that we went to and ministered when I was an MC years ago. He found me and told me that God had used me and our team to change his life! Now he was living in Omaha, and I was in Grand Island. LIFE LESSON - Time is constantly moving forward changing us, and God will continue changing us over time.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - What Church Boards need to know about Kids Ministries
Ministry to Kids is a foundational part of any church pursuing growth in their community. The lack of kids in church is a sure sign that everyone is aging together and new families are no where to be found. Often new churches or young churches have a majority of their outreach focus on reaching families with young kids, and they may have more kids than they know what to do with.
So Children's Ministry needs to be a common factor in all of our churches and an area of ministry that we chose to pursue excellence in. The concern is that this is an area we usually hire a pastor or recruit a volunteer to handle, and then we don't see much from them again because most of their activity happens during the Sunday morning service. And often the decision makers of the church, the board, lacks any people with experience in the kids ministry either as a volunteer or with their own children who are usually above that age. So what can we do to help the pastoral leadership and church board members understand what Kids Ministry is all about in our current strategy for discipleship, as well as future plans? Here are some thoughts from Spencer Click (Family Life Pastor from Hampton Virginia) in his article titled, 'The One Thing I Wish The Church Board Knew About Kids Ministry'

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Integrity
This past weekend, the group Pax Christi Multimedia held an event on our campgrounds in Lexington, NE. They were a wonderful group to work with throughout the weekend. Several traveled in from out of state, so we allowed them to stay an extra night on Friday. Late in the day on Saturday, their leader came to me to pay for those who had stayed the first night. The next day, she approached me at lunch and gave me a bit more funds for some people that had neglected to pay the day before. I wouldn't have known if they had or not, but she was honest and fair. LIFE LESSON - I was impressed by her integrity to do the right thing, even if no one would have noticed!

1). Blog Entry - Leaders Corner: Great Church
Every great youth ministry starts with a great church!
Now the term 'Youth Church' is used prominently in our culture as another title for a youth group. But when I say church I'm referring to the entire local body of believers from babies to seniors, standing together to accomplish God's will in the earth. I've seen many churches where the youth ministry 'outgrew' the church and this isn't healthy or sustainable. I've also seen many examples where pastors seek the 'all-star' youth pastor thinking that will help their church, without trying to implement any changes with the entire body on their own. The bottom line is this: A healthy youth group doesn't bring about a healthy church, but a healthy church does help create a healthy youth group. I can't think of a Youth Ministry that would still exist without a church behind it.
So what are some characteristics of a healthy church that help a youth group be strong? A healthy church is focused on mission, giving youth ministry a direction to guide everything by. A healthy church is active in the community, providing a natural plumbline for students to find their way into the church. A healthy church is full of people that need places to serve, including youth ministry. A healthy church has resources and finances that can be planned for youth and students. A healthy church is pursuing a discipleship plan for all of its people, including leaders and students.
These are all great attributes that would lay the foundation for an outstanding youth ministry. Often we can find one or two of these in most churches, but not all. If you find yourself in this position, here's a few action steps to pursue growth toward the goal of a healthy church: 1) Pray and ask God for direction first, 2) Try to focus on one thing at a time, 3) Have one discipleship plan for the church that every leader (youth, kids, worship, etc.) is working toward together. 4) Implement a team concept so every leader feels a part of every ministry, 5) Begin steps toward developing leaders from within on a regular basis. 6) Plan to meet with the Superintendent or Presbyter of your region to discuss ideas on a more personal level. 7) Develop a relationship with a nearby church who is at the place where you want to be. 8) Work within a budget that has planned for advancement and growth, 9) Train yourself and your leaders not to wait for people to come to you, but to go out and 'chase' the people in your community, and 10) Deal with the tough issues of change up front.
