1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner
In my job of working with leaders across NE who manage ministries for young people, one common trait to us all is that we work for a lead pastor. Sometimes, it's the lead pastor who I'm working with (or their spouse and family), but most of the time there are staff or volunteers who are serving them in the role of youth or children's pastor/main leader. What a great opportunity that can be challenging at times, as all earthy relationships can be. Here's a few thoughts from Scotty Gibbons in his book The Big 10 that can help us have great relationships with our lead pastors:
    - Discover your leader's vision and make it your own
    - Work hard at communicating effectively with your leader
    - Keep your leader appraised of what's happening in your ministry, both good and bad
(Scotty's book is available through NYM for only $5 for youth pastors/main leaders!)

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Plan Ahead
I have been training most every day on a bike for our upcoming NE Missions Bike Ride Sept 5-11, when we'll be riding our bikes about 450 miles across the state of NE, border to border. I decided to try a trek to Doniphan, about 13 miles south of Grand Island. It was a windy day and that makes for a tougher ride so I considered changing my plans, but my wife told me about a wonderful new bakery in Doniphan that I should try out. I love taking a midway break on my ride for coffee and a donut, so I decided to push through the wind anyway. Sure enough, I made it all the way into town and found out that the Swiss Baker was closed that day! (I did go back a few days later and enjoyed it anyway) LIFE LESSON - Plan ahead to avoid disappointment

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Followup
This week, several of our Youth Ministries are hosting special Back to School events in their communities, trying to draw out several students to experience their Youth Ministry for the first time and maybe decide to come back for more. One of the important elements that can't be overlooked with events of this nature is the response when it's done, or otherwise called, FOLLOWUP. How will you followup with the visitors who attend your special events? There are several different ideas you could consider, such as:
- Make sure to have a good sign up system to get their contact information before they leave
- Mobilize a team of students to lead in the followup
- Consider utilizing all methods - mail, email, calls, texts, social media, gifts, prizes for a 2nd visit, etc.
- Why not ask your pastor and/or parents to help in reaching out to the families and households of those that come and visit as well, maybe inviting them back to a Sunday service?
- Don't stop at just one contact - set a goal of reaching out to them 3 different times for an invite to come back
- Make sure when they come back for a 2nd visit that you welcome them, notice that they are there, and do something to make them feel special and help them acclimate to the culture of your group.
What other ideas can you add to our list?

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Respect Others
Last week, Kim came to pick me up from work one afternoon. We quickly ran to the Super Saver grocery store across the street from my work place to pick up a few items for dinner. We waited to pull into a parking space, and right as it opened another car from the opposite direction drove in fast and took it instead. Annoyed, we moved off to another opening only to have the exact same thing happen again. After we finally found a spot and walked into the store, I noticed the people from these other impatient vehicles coming in as well, not apologizing or making any kind of caring movements of any kind. LIFE LESSON - Be kind to others and respect them; it's not as prevalent in our world as we think.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Pokemon Go or No
One of the fun aspects of working with young people today is keeping up with their new sources of media and technology. It's a blessing because it opens up new avenues of communication as we pursue relationship and discipleship. But it's also a challenge because they have so many entertainment choices right at their fingertips. One of the most popular games of the summer was 'Pokemon Go'. Here's some thoughts at the link above to help you out as your work with students deciding whether to enjoy this game or not.

As we were traveling last week to Ohio to be with our family, we stopped for gas just north of Cincinnati. As I was pumping gas, my wife got it to go into the gas station. After finishing up with our vehicle, I made my way to go toward the gas station as well when I saw my wife next to us at the pumps with another vehicle. She had stopped to help a lady pump her gas when she saw that the lady was an older lady struggling with the task. LIFE LESSON - Never be too busy to help someone out nearby in need.

1). Blog Entry: Returning to School
Today is my first official day back from a long summer trip speaking at a camp in Montana, attending National Fine Arts, and a small family vacation. It also is the first day of school for my freshman daughter at Northwest in Grand Island. During the long drive home yesterday I was thinking about her school and all the wonderful things Youth Ministries can do to be involved on their local campus:
    - Prayer Zone Partners: Sign your parents and church adults up to commit to pray for their local schools every time they drive by them.
    - Campus Missionaries: Sign your students up to attend their school with the purpose to reach 5 friends for Christ during the year
    - Campus Clubs: Help your students organize a weekly Bible study on their local school campus as our outreach to others and a way to bring all the Christian teenagers from different churches together.
    - 1 Month: Challenge your students to bring their hard copy of a Bible with them wherever they go for the first month, taking pics and posting them along the way
    - Volunteer: Ask your church members to volunteer at the school helping for special activities, concessions, etc. This is a great way to help them meet new people and bless the school; make sure to put a Youth Ministry Tshirt on them as they go!
    - Plan to attend school lunches once or twice a month. Always bring some treats to share with all the students at the table.
    - 5th Quarters: Play some small group parties at various houses throughout the community after football games on Friday nights.
    - See You At The Pole: see below

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Never Give Up
This past week was our annual National Fine Arts Youth Convention for the Assemblies of God. My son Ryan has participated for several years in the areas of Tshirt Design and Graphic Design. Last year he was the 4th place entry in Graphic Design. He looked at his judges comments and applied them to his entry this current year. Of course, the judges change from years to year, and this year his Graphic Design entry wasn't listed in the top ten, but his Tshirt Design came in at #7. I was impressed because he understood that it wasn't a flaw in the system, just the normal ebb and flow of changing judges with different subjective opinions. LIFE LESSON - Everything changes; we need to do our best to adjust to the changes and keep going, never give up!

1). Blog Entry: Leader Corner - Deep
Working with kids and young people, we must be concerned with discipleship. One of the questions that often arises is how deep can you go with kids? Some would argue that you stick to the basic points that are foundational so they have a solid grasp on essentials to help them stay true through the years. Others would say that we should go as deep as we can because their young minds are more flexible and able to handle difficult concepts for adults. So which is it for you? Here's a great article, linked above, from Mark Entzminger, our National Children's Ministry Leader, about going Deep in our curriculum with kids.

1). Life Lessons - Protection
This past week I had the great privilege or preaching at Montana's Jr. Teen Camp in Kalispell, MT at Glacier Bible Camp. It's a beautiful campgrounds nestled in the mountains and right off the banks of the National Scenic Flatland River. The camp was awesome and the God was faithful. Early on I had been warned that they had several sightings of bears near the camp over the past few weeks. I didn't think much of it while there, with the only wildlife I'd seen being two white bunnies. But I received a text after leaving on Saturday stating that bear tracks were seen just down the bank of the river next to my cabin from sometime during the week. LIFE LESSON - God is always watching and protecting us, even when we don't know it.
