1). Blog Entry: Life Lesson - Common Purpose
This past weekend, I had the privilege of working with a bunch of guys volunteering at our Campgrounds in Lexington, NE. We were demolishing the inside area of our pop stand to prepare for new bathrooms this upcoming camp season. We spent most of our two days working hard, side by side, enjoying each other's company, and together advancing beyond our original plans, with studs in place for the next team in April. But the best part of the weekend was Friday night, after dinner. We sat down and talked openly about our faith, read some Scripture and sang some songs, and prayed for each other. It was a powerful, real moment of connecting between strong guys from 4 different churches and cities around our state. LIFE LESSON - When we come together, it can benefit us both professionally and personally.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Process Driven Youth Ministries
Our mission as leaders in the church is to make disciples. Jesus left us this great commission right before He left to rejoin God in heaven. And He gave us His Holy Spirit to help get the job done. Sometimes, we lose sight of this ultimate goal because of pressures in our jobs, inappropriate measures of what we define as success, and the desire to keep up with the trends of other ministries around us. None of these things need to distract us if they lead us to the goal of making disciples. To properly reach that destination, we must establish a process in our ministries. This can be easier said than done, as many youth ministers received no training to prepare them for that endeavor. While connecting with others near you to see what they do, reading devotionals of National Youth Leaders for suggestions, and picking up idea from training events and programs are all beneficial, each individual leaders must clarify for themselves what their Core Values are for their ministries. This will guide the development of a process of discipleship. So what are those characteristics for you? Here's some suggestions from Eric Geiger, in his book Simple Student Ministry:

Process driven youth ministries
- create space for relationships
- engage students in ministry and mission
- foster less dependence on programs
- operate with great intentionality

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Not Alone
This past Sunday, my pastor was preaching about God's command for us to be thankful in all situations (1 Thess 5:18). He mentioned how that is hard for him to do and told a story or two to back up that fact. Then he asked if any of us ever feel the same way. Quickly, without missing a beat, one of the head ushers in the back said NO in a loud voice, jokingly. Pastor looked up surprised and then the whole church broke out in laughter, knowing that we all struggle in the same way at times when going through difficult periods. LIFE LESSON - Though it feels like we are alone when in bad circumstances, all of us go through those situations and we can help each other because we're not alone.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Basic Christian Habits
A major part of discipleship is bringing people into a relationship with Jesus as their Lord and Savior. We often refer to this as becoming saved. But that term is a bit misleading, because although they are instantly changed when they ask Jesus to come into their hearts, they still need to walk out their faith in their lives. So what are the things that we should encourage new believers to do, to start living the life of a Christian. If we expect immediate change, it may be too much pressure too fast. But if we don't put any expectations out there, they might resort back to old habits and walk away. Here's a list of some basic Christian Habits to help new believers develop quickly, according to Don Evert in his book, I Once Was Lost:

1. Praying
2. Studying Scripture
3. Attending church
4. Identify as a Christian
5. Serving in church

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Be Patient
This past weekend, my wife and I went into Omaha for an afternoon to move some furniture items into a new condo we own for my son Ryan to live in when he attends UNO College next fall. After refinancing, we were able to make this arrangement happen. While excited to have a place in the Omaha area again, we are determined to watch our finances and make it work. We went to Nebraska Furniture Mart to find a table and chair set for the dining room area. It was challenging because we found one in our price range with the right height and width but not the chairs we liked, and then we found one with the right height and chairs but too long on the width. The only one we found with all the right details was almost twice the amount we were prepared to spend. We thought about just buying it, but in the end we decided to wait and see if we could find something different looking other places. Literally, the next day, we went online to the Mart's website and found the exact table we were looking for, which wasn't available on the floor at the store. LIFE LESSON - Don't rush into quick decisions that may be wrong.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Levels of Student Discipleship
This past week, we have had a ministers retreat welcome to all of our ministers throughout Nebraska. It's been a wonderful time of coming together for inspiration, fellowship, and restoration. One of the main moments from yesterday was a banquet where we talked about plans to continue pursuing our ultimate objective of making disciples and aligning ourselves to do so in an increasing measure. So in working with students, it's important for each minister and church to develop strategies for discipling young people. One of the challenges we have in that endeavor is labeling the various levels of spiritual maturity among students. Here's a suggested outline from Duffy Robbins in his book, Building a Youth Ministry that Builds Disciples:

6 Different Levels of Spiritual Commitment
1. Pool of Humanity - all teens in your area
2. Come - all teens that show up
3. Grow - teens shop tolerate spirituality
4. Disciple - personal initiative
5. Develop - student leaders
6. Multiplier - Leading others to Christ

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Double Check
Recently, my family and I returned from a trip over the holidays. We all went back to work, and my wife and I noticed how one of my son's was scheduled for some very aggressive hours. We asked him about it and he explained that his old manager transitioned to a new company. He hadn't had a chance to meet the new manager yet, so they were using his online profile to schedule his hours. His profile, which he hadn't changed since he was first hired, stated that he would work any hours over weekends. So, he did change his profile and made efforts to meet the new manager, accepting the already scheduled hours and expecting change down the road. LIFE LESSON: Make a point to revisit old profiles to keep current on expectations.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - PRAY TODAY?
This morning ... I prayed. Isn't that good? Aren't you glad the writer of the blog you're reading prayed? You should be. Who knows what I could be writing if I hadn't. But flip the script and ask yourself the same question. Do the people relying on you for things today hope that you prayed as well? They should have. Who knows what you're capable of without first entrusting everything for this day, this week, this month, this year, this moment to God. Prayer may not make everything easy, but it does make everything easier. Prayer may not make everything right, but it makes everything right in the middle of God's Will. PRAYER IDEA - Make a list (if you don't already have this) of all your students and/or leaders that you are working with. Develop columns for each month of the year. Take an extra couple minutes each morning in your prayer time to lift them up, one or two per day, so you can make sure you are praying for them all at least once a month. Maybe even consider sending them an encouraging text or FB message after you pray for them as well.
