1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Sing Out
I was at the gym earlier last week, going through my regular routine in an effort to stay in good health. An older gentleman who I've seen several times was there as well. He's always impressed me because of the amounts he can lift with weights that rival my own, though being probably close to twice my age. But he surprised me, when I heard a high voice from behind me singing a lovely tune, and when I looked it belonged to him! He had headphones in, one of the first times I've seen him do that, and didn't realize he was singing out loud for the world to hear. LIFE LESSON - Don't be afraid to sing out the song in your heart!

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Students in Ministry

Next Saturday, March 4th, is our Student Summit with Fine Arts in Bellevue, NE (linked below). Fine Arts is the name of the National Program through the Assemblies of God where we help our teenagers discover, develop, and deploy their gifts in Ministry. It's a very busy time for school activities on the weekends, and some churches don't participate with our National Fine Arts program - which I hope is because they have another strategy for developing the ministry gifts in their students.
But I believe we need to lead our students to start doing ministry with us. The more active they are in ministry now, the more likely they are to stay involved after they graduate and maybe pursue a call of God for ministry as a career. I think of times when I've seen a pastor stand up before his sermon on Sunday morning and ask the people to help with a need for another nursery worker or sound man for ministry. Talking to them later, many said that very few people, or maybe even no one responded. We've help fill our churches with people who enjoy coming, attending, and receiving but aren't giving of their time and service in addition to their finances. We must teach our students that being a church member is not just consuming but participating as well!
Fine Arts is one of the great programs to assist us in that endeavor. We may stand up in front of our students and encourage them to do a Fine Arts entry and find the same response of the pastor looking for volunteers. But don't stop there! Go to them personally and encourage and lead them to do something, anything to just try it out and see if maybe it's something they enjoy! We should set a goal that each of our students participates in some way with the ministry we do on a regular basis for Teenagers in our churches.

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Communication
     - Recently, I've seen several conflicts that have been brought on by a lack of good communication. Business deals that fell apart and hurt friendships, missing important meetings because we failed to put it on our calendars or respond to confirmation requests, arguments from misunderstandings and wrong assumptions. We live in a fast paced world, but if we don't slow down enough to communication properly it can get it out of control. LIFE LESSON - Communicate properly to avoid more problems down the road.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - The Right Scorecard
In ministry, one of the toughest things to do is to make sure that we are working toward our main goal. It's easy to get off track and spend lots of energy for good purposes that aren't necessarily the best and most productive. We've got to know what our measure of success is, and then take the right steps to pursue that goal. When all of your team members are working together toward that pursuit, you'll accomplish much for the Kingdom of God. So when you get together each week, what are the things that you should be measuring to see if you're hitting your goals? Here's some ideas how to coe up with the list from Gino Wickman and Mike Paton in their book, Get a Grip:

How to come up with the right weekly scorecard
1. Is it something the leadership team wants to see every week
2. Does the # make sense weekly
3. Can we get the # each week

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Worldview
Yesterday, I had the privilege of speaking at a Youth Rally in Burwell, NE. Several churches transported their students to join us as we played some games together, loaded up donated clothes for our STL Toss Box Campaign (find more info about that below), explored lessons on giving in the Bible, prayed for each other, and enjoyed some great pizza and snacks before heading home. It was a blast! One of the key moments was when I was talking about Speed the Light, our shared discipleship strategy for teaching students the heart of missions. I mentioned that one of our projects from last year, a new vehicle for our NE missionary in Rwanda, Africa, was financed and ready to purchase. I told them that if they were involved in STL, regardless of how much they contributed, they were a part of touching people's lives in Rwanda. LIFE LESSON - We can impact our world, regardless of where we are from, when we come together for Missions.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Persuasion
As leaders, we are constantly offering people something that can enhance their lives and give them a reason to follow us. Whether we like or not, we are in the business of marketing and promotion. Some of us do this better than others. Our effectiveness is also largely based on the people we are trying to reach and their perspective. Some people enjoy a hard sell, while others will balk if they feel like we are trying to sell anything at all. So where's the line? How can we properly persuade people to follow us as we follow Christ? Here's some principles of persuasion to consider from Robert Cialdini in his book Yes!: 50 Secrets from the Science of Persuasion:

1. Reciprocity - If you give something to someone, they're more likely to give you something back
2. Scarcity - The more exclusive something is, the more desirable it is
3. Authority - Ratings by trusted sources help
4. Commitment - A small commitment such as signing someone up just using their email address is less of a step for the user but shows commitment, meaning that they're more likely to add other data in the future
5. Social Proof - If a user things that others are doing the same thing, that increases their confidence and entices them to transact
6. Likability - If you can relate to something, you're more likely to want to interact

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Who They Are
This past week I was traveling on the road for a national conference with other District Youth Directors. I spent some time working at a Panera Bread at one point, and as I was working I looked across the restaurant and saw a family enter. It was two older sisters, and they will carefully guiding their elder mother in to her seat. She seemed a bit fragile and slower to speak, so they were being especially careful with her. They sat down and began talking, a bit louder than I'd prefer. Then a call came in, and the volume went up incrementally. At first, it was a bit annoying. But then I started to appreciate how they were just enjoying life. I imagined where they came from, what they were like in their normal lives, who they were outside of Panera. Suddenly, the volume didn't bother me as much. LIFE LESSON - Try to see people for Who They Are and not just what they do.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Leadership Teams
One of our NYM Initiatives that we do for leaders is called CORE GROUPS. In four regions of our state, we travel three times a year to gather leaders from the area together for fellowship, fun, relationship, and training. It's a great time of becoming a team and working together to reach students all over NE for Jesus. It's FREE and available to all those who work with young people in our churches, not just the main pastor or leader. While many have brought their teams, there are others that didn't have teams to bring. Sometimes this can be very challenging in a smaller church, or a church that doesn't have many available volunteers. Here's some thoughts on developing a great leadership team from Scotty Gibbons, in his book The Big 10:

Important steps for building leadership teams
1. Constantly recruit
2. Choose character over charisma
3. Provide easy on and off ramps.
4. Ask for a strong investment and commitment.
5. Meet monthly
6. Gather annually to celebrate and forecast vision.
7. Create a culture of improvement.
