1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - What does the Mission do...
Sometimes we got lost in the busyness of all that we are doing and forget why we are doing it in the first place. It's important for us to have an established mission that we keep front and center in our lives and ministry. Here's some effects of a good mission from Aubrey Malphurs, in his book Advanced Strategic Planning:

The Mission...
1. Dictates Direction
2. Formulates Function
3. Focuses the Future
4. Gives a process for decision making
5. Inspires Unity
6. Shapes Strategy
7. Enhances effectiveness
8. Ensures endurance
9. Facilitates Evaluation

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Spell Check
Communication is an important part of our lives, especially for those leading others in ministry. Sometimes we get ourselves in trouble by not thinking through things as much as we should, and other times it's just miscommunication that gets in the way. Recently, I was posting the results of our champion for the Caption Contest, a blog entry here every Tuesday. When I went to write 'The Winner is...' I accidentally wrote, 'The Sinner is...' After posting it, I saw my error and quickly corrected it, hopefully before anyone saw. LIFE LESSON - Be careful how you communicate to avoid problems down the road!

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Simplify
As leaders, we are trying to accomplish much for God in this world. But often it can keep us running at a busy pace that is tough to keep up with and sustain peace in our lives. We often need to recalibrate and make sure that the things we are investing in are part of God's Plan for us at this time. Here's some suggestions on simplifying your life, from Ryan and Beth Frank in their book, Pulse: Pumping Life Into Your Kids Ministry

1. Set your priorities
2. Keep your priorities in order
3. Delegate as much as possible
4. Use time saving tools
5. Do more than one thing at a time
6. Decide what can be postponed or eliminated
7. Get creative with your family time
8. Schedule regular breaks
9. Be open to change in your lifestyle
10. Do your homework to see what others do
11. Stop and listen to Jesus
12. Don't think - rely on a checklist
13. Don't quit or make big decisions during the madness
14. Don't make people decisions when time is limited
15. Develop a plan to make next time better
16. Get feedback from others
17. When it's over, crash
18. Do more by doing less

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Really?
I host small groups for youth and kids leaders around the state that we call Core Groups. Recently, I hosted one in Hastings for kids leaders and the team from a church nearby were there. We discussed helping kids hear God's voice, and we talked about the value of helping them learn how to be silent. After we finished, one of the team members looked at her pastor and said, 'Are We Really Going To Do That?' It was funny because she was saying it out of exasperation because they have one young boy that is very rowdy. LIFE LESSON - Small Groups are all about being real with each other in our pursuit following God!

One of the most difficult arenas of this battle is the fight against our selfish desires. Here's some of the selfish temptations that are common to all of us, according to A.W. Tozer in his book, The Pursuit of God

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Encounters with God
Recently a wonderful woman in our church passed away. She had faithfully served God and raised her family to love God as well, keeping her kids in church and sending them every summer to camp. At the funeral, her family sat in the front row and I recognized several of the young men, Though grown up and mature, I could still see the faces of the young teens that had come to camp a few years back. After the ceremony, as we were gathered in line for a reception, the boys came up to me to say hi. They thanked me for my work with camp, and testified that it was effective in changing their lives, even though they both apologized for trying to sneak out each year. LIFE LESSON - We need to help our young people find a place to encounter God in their lives, so they will become lifelong followers of Jesus.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Reference Checks
Recently, I was in the process of conducting an interview. It went very well and I enjoyed the candidate looking for a new position. After the interview I needed to contact a few references to ask them specific questions about the candidate to further discover if they were the right person for the job. This can be a challenge for some, wondering what to ask and how to really get to the root of the issues. Here's some thoughts on conducting reference checks from Patrick Lencioni in his book, The Ideal Team Player:

Reference Checks
1. Put the provider at ease
2. Look for specifics
3. Focus on areas of doubt
4. Pay attention to references who don't respond
5. Ask what others would say

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Worship
Last week my church had its annual business meeting. We had church on Sunday morning, then went into our fellowship hall for a potluck lunch, before heading back into our Sanctuary for a quick meeting of the members. During the meeting, each Pastor presented their annual report from their ministry. The last Pastor to go was Chris, our worship Pastor, and when our lead pastor was introducing him, he began to fight a cough. He laughingly suggested that he was getting choked up while introducing him. Then when Chris went to the mic, a member asked if he was going to sing his report. Chris played along with it and said that he hadn't written his report to song, but maybe he'd consider it for the future. LIFE LESSON - Worship is a fun part of our Faith and we should have fun worshipping God at all times!

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Clustering Your Work
One of the challenges of working in today's fast paced world is multi-tasking. This is a regular part of a young person's life, with cell phones and other types of portable media. It's important that we learn good time management skills or we can get lost in the confusion. Here's some ideas for putting your work together in a realistic production flow, from Todd Henry in his book, The Accidental Creative:

- set aside an hour to do strategic thinking and planning
- cluster meetings together and leave large blocks of uninterrupted time open each week
- set aide a dedicated time to responding to emails
- set aside a dedicated time for phone calls and face to face conversations
- separate conceptual/creative time from concrete/task time
