1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Teenager Gaps
Working with teenagers in today's culture, we must be aware of the relationship gaps in their lives. Many times students are not as well connected with others in influence in their lives as they might have been in the past. A general lack of respect for leadership and authority has permeated this generation and made it challenging to help them see things from a big picture perspective rather than just living for the moment. Here are a few relationships gaps that we should be speaking to when we communicate with teens, from Doug Fields and Duffy Robbins in their book, Speaking to Teenagers:

Gaps we address and speaking to teenagers:
Their parents
Their friends
Authority figures
People of other Ethnicities
Their friends in various school clusters

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Church Attendance
Over Easter Weekend, my family and I visited Chicago to connect with her brother and his family from Ohio. We attended church at Willow Creek North Shore and we had Pastor Bill Hybels preach. Knowing he had several visitors in his congregations around the city, he talked about his experiences where he felt God's presence in church and it impacted his life. He challenged the cynics in the crowd to commit to attending services in any church regularly for 4 straight weeks and see if God doesn't reveal Himself to them as well. LIFE LESSON - Church attendance is a valuable part of our culture and we should challenge others around us in the same way as well.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Why we read the Bible
As Christian leaders, it's important that we help teach those we are leading to read their Bibles on a regular basis. The Bible is one of the pillars of our faith; the very words of God given to us for our benefit. It's virtually impossible to be a strong Christian without a foundation on the Word of God. Here's a few basic reasons for daily devotions in the Scriptures, from Francis Chan in his book, Multiply

1. God describes Himself to us in His own words
2. We discover things about ourselves and the world we live in
3. It enables us to live Godly lives
4. It helps facilitate our relationship with God
5. To Exalt Jesus
6. To Prepare us for our Purpose

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Faithfulness
A few weeks ago I was sitting in church. I had been on worship team and when I left the stage mid service to find my wife I noticed she was sitting on the other side of the sanctuary from where we normally sit. I nestled in beside her and began listening to the message. At one point I looked over across the aisle to an elderly lady sitting near me. She had a walker sitting in front of her, and she was using it as a table to hold her Bible and she studied the words of the message. I then noticed her writing down notes in her notepad as well. It impressed me to see this saint, presumably a Christian for several years, still giving her best in devotion to God. LIFE LESSON - We all need to continue developing our relationship with God, both young and old.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Innovation
As leaders, we are seemingly always looking for ways to be innovative; to try something new that will reap better and more effective results. We don't want to be constantly recalibrating without giving our current setup a chance to succeed, but we should always be looking ahead, ready to adjust for the next level coming our way. What are some good ways for us to judge where we are at, and decide how to move forward? Here's some thought provoking questions to get the process started with your leadership team, from Andy Stanley in his book, Deep and Wide:

7 Questions for Innovative Leaders
1. Do we have a transferable mission or vision statement?
2. What have we fallen in love with that's not as effective as it used to be?
3. Where are we manufacturing energy?
4. If we all got kicked out and an outside group moved in, what changes would they introduce?
5. What do we measure?
6. What do we celebrate?
7. If our group ceased to exist, would our community miss us?

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - Helping Others in Need
I went to the movies with my wife and daughter a week or so ago. It was a fun time, with an unusual circumstance. As we found our seats in the theater, maybe 15 minutes early, a single gentleman sat nearby us. He was wearing a hood, looked uncomfortable, and kept looking around at all the people rather than the promotions on the screens. For some reason, he caught my attention. As soon as the movie was ready to start, he quickly got up and went to the bathroom without his bag. I couldn't help but think that something was wrong and maybe we weren't safe, so I followed him to see what was up. He did in fact use the restroom and then come back in to the theater, so I returned to my seat but kept an eye on him.
He continued to act very shady, hardly watching the screen, writhing in his seat, looking at his phone constantly and at all the people, and messing around with something under his jacket. I was prepared to jump up in an instant if he jumped up with ill intent. About 30 more minutes, and he got up to leave again. I rushed after him and stopped him outside the theater, asking if he was OK. After discussing for a moment, I found out that he had just received kidney dialysis treatments and was in severe pain. I ushered him to the front and found some first aid to help him out before his parents came to rescue him. LIFE LESSON - When people around us are acting strange, don't be afraid to step in and offer help as Jesus would.

1). Blog Entry: Leaders Corner - Setting Goals
This past week we have been enjoying the annual business gatherings of Assemblies of God Ministers in Nebraska, at Bellevue Christian Center. I had the privilege of speaking about plans to improve our campgrounds, as well as plan for our new initiative called Vision NE. When starting new things, it's proper to set out some goals and take appropriate steps to try to achieve them. We all do this from time to time in our leadership, so how can we make sure that we hit the goals we're striving for? Here's some suggestions from Mark Batterson in his book, Circle Maker

10 Steps to Goal Setting
1. Start with Prayer
2. Check your Motives
3. Think in Categories
4. Be Specific
5. Write it down
6. Include Others
7. Celebrate along the Way
8. Dream Big
9. Think Long
10. Pray Hard

1). Blog Entry: Life Lessons - The Word Within
Psalm 119:11 says, 'I have hidden your Word in my heart that I might not sin against You.' David was writing this to God, and He honored God's Word as we all should. Recently I was in a Sunday Morning Church Service and the pastor quoted a particular verse as part of his message. Suddenly, he turned to me and said, 'Toby, I remember memorizing that verse with my kids when they were young and we were helping them with Junior Bible Quiz!' LIFE LESSON - Study the Scriptures while you are young, and they will remain with you throughout your life.
